Description

What happens when a nation that was born to run, and to rev engines into the wild frontier, runs into the full stop that is our current social and political climate? The answer, my friend, is somewhere “In the Morse Code of Brake Lights,” as The New Pornographers would have it on their eighth album. There’s a deep climatic unease running through these 11 tracks that’s matched only by the sheer musical glee with which the band addresses the prevailing mood of the moment. It’s an album in which foreboding and bliss somehow go hand in hand—mixing founder A.C. Newman’s nearly symphonic levels of pop arrangement and harmony with a careening quality that feels unsafe at any speed (to quote the famous Ralph Nader phrase that the opening track also borrows).

  • You'll need a backseat driver
In the Morse Code of Brake Lights is the second consecutive New Pornos album without Dan Bejar, but lives with his absence better than Whiteout Conditions did. Bejar's presence always boosted the dour ballads, and without him, the band decides to go all-in in charged power pop. This might be their most anthemic album, rarely hitting the brakes despite the title. Every TNP album has its irresistible earworm or two or ten, and here, it's "The Surprise Knock", which is just hook after hook in one song. I still feel they need Bejar back at some point to fully recapture their greatness, but they still fare decently without him. ... show more

  • More great tunes from TNP!
My first impression of this release was "where are the guitars"? While TNP have been getting away from guitar oriented tunes for awhile now, Newman writes such great catchy songs it doesn't even matter to me now. All of their songs have a way getting into your head and staying there. Highly recommended! ... show more

  • Colossal Sounds
Love these Canadians. Beautiful pop, lyrics with sly word play, and the hypnotic voice of Neko Case. This is a great fix for NP fans.

  • The best indie band out there
This band keeps getting better with each release and this album has some of their most memorable songs. This is the best album I've bought in two years.

  • previous offerings are fresher and more satisfying
Certainly not their strongest effort. The first three tracks are strong then it turns into uninspired second-hand ideas. The songs with the addition of the violin particularly show a muddy, muddled production.

  • Love!
One of their best albums, yet! The only thing that's missing is Dan Bejar! Despite that, I'm still giving it a five star rating.

  • Super great
Another great album from the supergroup north of the border. Solid song writing that we've come to expect from the New Pornographers.

New and fresh from a band I love.
