Description

iFi was born in 2012 with one goal in mind: to produce 'ultra-fidelity' audio products that push the sonic envelope whilst still priced within the mainstream. iFi audio is under our parent company, AMR, Abbingdon Music Research, which designs and produces top-end luxurious audio products. AMR saw in 2010 that customer demand for wireless and portable headphones was expanding as the whole audio dynamic was changing. Thus, iFi was launched. iFi offers small but prodigious personal audio products thanks to the superior knowledge of AMR’s technology. Today, we are proud of our British (and international) roots. We continue to design and produce over 35 different products. We are headquartered in Southport, UK with distribution including retailers such as B&H and etailz with production overseas. We source parts from around the world from manufacturers including AMOS (UK), GE Valves (USA), WIMA (Germany) and TDK (Japan). iFi iSilencer+ In recent years, more and more music lovers have taken to using computers as their primary audio source. These are often connected to audio gear via USB – the universal interface that enables digital data to pass from one piece of hardware to another. We decided to improve on the previous generation of iSilencer. The all-new iSilencer+ is reinforced with the additional low ESR Tantalum capacitors for input The new iSilencer+ sports several enhancements compared to the outgoing iSilencer3.0. The circuitry has been upgraded with the addition of low-ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) Tantalum capacitors for input and output filtering, further elevating its noise-busting abilities with a 10-fold increase in filtering capacitance. It is also available in more flavours of USB; while the iSIlencer3.0 is only available with USB Type A connectors, the iSilencer+ comes in three versions to include the newer USB-C connector: • USB-A to USB-A • USB-C to USB-A • USB-C to USB-C All versions support the ‘SuperSpeed’ USB 3.0 standard, as well as USB 2.0 for backwards compatibility, and incorporate high-quality gold-plated connectors for optimal signal transfer. iSilencer+ A-A The transfer mode used for ‘USB Audio Class’ devices is more demanding of USB hardware/software than the bulk/burst mode used for peripherals such as printers and hard drives. Error checking is present but there is no re-transmission in the event of CRC (Cyclic Redundancy Check) errors. Electrical noise on USB signals causes CRC errors and thus data loss, as does poor signal integrity. This can result in audio signal distortion, artefacts (such as clicks and pops) and latency – all things that can affect the performance of computer-based audio systems. The iSilencer+ solves this issue by removing electrical noise (including EMI/RFI) at source, thereby enabling bit-perfect transfer of audio data to the DAC. iSilencer+ C-A Uniquely, it does this by combining passive filtering with iFi’s ANC II (Active Noise Cancellation II) circuit. Developed from military radar technology, ANC II works in a similar way to active noise-cancelling headphones – it generates a signal identical to that of the incoming electrical noise but in the opposite phase, actively cancelling it out. This is highly effective at removing low- and mid-frequency noise, while passive insulating filters deal with higher frequency interference. This combination is measurably more effective at eradicating noise corrupting the USB signal than devices relying solely on passive filtering. iSilencer+ C-C Whilst removing noise, the iSIlencer+ reduces the occurrence of jitter – a form of digital distortion that leads to data ‘packet errors’ and results in cold, harsh sound. It also re-balances the signal via iFi’s REbalance technology, ensuring that the digital signal received by the DAC is identical to the original source, no matter which audio format is being played. Read more The more the merrier As well as plugging an iSilencer+ into the active USB output between computer and DAC, more iSilencer+ ‘sticks’ can be plugged into spare USB ports to further reduce radiated EMI. Each time the number of units (and therefore the number ANC II circuits) is doubled, noise reduction capability also doubles. And the iSilencer+ can be used between external hard drives and music servers, too. The precise effect of the iSilencer+ on sound quality varies from system to system; typically, one can expect to hear more clarity, greater dynamic extension and sharper leading edges, making the music sound more vivid and open. • Pretty remarkable for a price/performance modification in a resolving system.
Color: iSilencer+ A > A
Let me start by saying that I seldom write reviews, but I had to write one for this item. I am using an Allo USBridge Signature streamer feeding into a Topping D90 DAC and have been streaming via an Ethernet connection. Unfortunately due to my layout, I was using Ethernet over AC, and while I've cleaned up my AC line with filtering capacitors, there was still a good amount of noise. While Wifi is usually worse than Ethernet on some streamers from a sound quality perspective, I thought that in MY application, since I'm using Ethernet over an AC powerline, Wifi might actually be an improvement. So I ordered a Wifi USB adapter for my Allo and witnessed a tremendous improvement in sound quality from that alone. Then I thought, "What if I install the iFi Silencer ahead of the USB WiFi adapter?" Believe me, I used an exacto knife to open the box and barely touched a single thing because I was 90% sure I would be returning this. I installed the iFi into my Allo's USB port, then inserted the Wifi USB stick into the iFi and pressed play. Let me just say while I thought there was no noise before, the perceived 'noise floor' just dropped to new levels of blackness. There was an almost palpable increase in the sense of just blackness, not 'space' between the instruments, but blackness. Don't get me wrong, instrument separation was even more highlighted, but not at the expense of being disjointed. Bass texture improved the most with this device, and some of the aggression in the high notes turned a bit sweeter. IN MY CASE, and I have to emphasize this because every sound system is different, every room has its own acoustics and your sound quality starts not only at your loadcenter, but even the utility transformer. But in my case, there was a 20% increase in fidelity and sound quality. I felt like I just jumped from $300 interconnects to $1000 interconnects. It would be the equivalent of using a Hagerman FryCorder or Frybaby to burn in your IC or power cords in terms of improvement. Again, you need a highly resolving system and the results will be better the worse your interference is, but I was absolutely blown away by the improvement. It makes sense since my data is being streamed via a Wifi stick which is inherently noisy to begin with, but this iFi unit filtered out the junk and exemplified the music. It doesn't 'dampen' anything, it just brings things to a whole new level of natural detail and resolution (not digital harshness) that no other device anywhere near this price point can accomplish. I highly recommend you give it a shot, and if you don't like it just make sure to buy it from a seller with a decent return policy. You 'almost' have nothing to lose, and in the world of HiFi where DACs can go for over $10,000K, you just don't find upgrades so palpably obvious in this price range like the iFi. ... show more

  • Not good for Focusrite interface
Color: iSilencer+ A > A
The product physically is good. Thin, size is good, etc. But the problem is that it did do the work that I expected: I have a DELL Precision M4660 laptop, connected to a Focusrite audio interface. I was expecting this device to reduce the static noise between my laptop and the audio interface, which was not the case. The noise was still bad. ... show more

  • Worth the price, the iFi iSilencer+ actually works.
Color: iSilencer+ A > A
Where to start? This little device amazing. It improves the sound of my Creative Sound Blaster X7 with Op-amps Muses 01 and OPA 604. The Mid-range is thicker, the bass is stronger, the treble is tamed. The sound stage is improved, the sound separation is clearer. My very edgy treble heavy Beyerdynamic T90 is tamed with this little USB device. The treble is so much more listenable at louder volumes. I did a test with YouTube with PS4 Pro and PC. How was this down, you ask? The PS4 Pro is connected to the Sound Blaster X7 by TOSLINK and the PC is connected by the USB cable with the iFi iSilencer+. This makes it possible to play the video at the same time and hear the sound difference. I played a video on the PS4 Pro and PC at the same volume. The PC video sounded better then with PS4 Pro. I repeated the steps without the iFi iSilencer+ and the sound was exactly the same with the PS4 Pro and PC. So, this is proof the iFi iSilencer+works. The Sound was changed with the iFi iSilencer+ because it only effects the USB and not TOSLINK cable. I got other Op-amps I own, and I am planning swapping out the Op-Amps I am using now, to see if the ifi iSilencer+ changes the sound of the Creative Sound Blaster X7 with them installed. The OPA 604 is known to be very grainy but has a tube amp sound signture, this is the reason the OPA 604 sounds good with the iFi iSilencer+. My other Op-amps OPA 627 and OPA 827 will sound different with the iFi iSilencer+. I think DACs with more noise benefit more with the iFi Silencer+. I would highly recommend the iFi iSilencer+. If people say they do not hear a difference, I think it is because their DAC and headphones, they use don't benefit as much. I think lower to midrange DACs would benefit more than high end DACs with the iFi iSilencer+. ... show more

  • not snake oil at all.
Color: iSilencer+ A > A
if your setup is trash its always gonna be trash. this thing isn't going to work miracles. but on a clean linear setup this thing really drops the noise floor noticeably, gets rid of a lot of grain in literally everything from music to peoples horrible mics in discord. i have a pretty high end setup and this little usb filter for $50 made a huge and noticeable difference that a lot of people end up paying thousands of dollars for in the form of a way overpriced DAC. would highly recommend to anyone with an already decent setup as it will truly bump it up to the next level of clarity for almost no money in the scope of audio equipment. ... show more
