  • Challenge traditional understanding Challenge traditional understanding
Format: Paperback
I cannot say enough to encourage you to buy this book. If you’re a new Christian, it will open your eyes and ignite your understanding of the Word of God and give you an early level of spiritual maturity that many long-time Christians do not achieve in all their years of surface-reading the Bible. If you are a long-time Christian, it will challenge beliefs you may hold traditionally and make you think about the Word in a wholly new and exciting way. I have been a Christian and a Baptist for most of my life. I have always had a hunger for the Bible topics that go unstudied. Why are there three generations of kings missing from Jesus’ genealogy? (Jehoram’s son is Joash, not Hezekiah) What is going on with the book of Jude, which is, admittedly, one of my favorite books of the Bible? That story in Judges with the concubine that makes me feel physically ill…why is it in there? May it never be said of me that I was Biblically illiterate and did not try to understand the God I claim to serve, and this book gives knowledge, answers, and insight that are vital to Biblical literacy as a whole. Buy this book for yourself and your spiritual knowledge, buy it as a gift, or buy it for your pastor. The book is laid out in a format that it can serve as a daily devotion, and the wealth of information that it contains is organized into bite-sized pieces. Just don’t be surprised if you start hearing some sermons based on the chapters in this book should you gift it to your pastor. The perfect blend between traditional beliefs, original language and text, and misunderstandings involving translation make for an informative and engaging read. The worst thing you can do is jump to conclusions or discredit Dr. Heiser based on your traditional understanding of scriptures, and the best thing you can do is read his book, consider his references, and be willing to adjust your thinking. We adjust our way of thinking all the time based on life circumstances like medical diagnoses. Consider all the Biblical discoveries in the past 100 years like the Dead Sea Scrolls, and continuing archaeological evidence from men like Joel Kramer and Titus Kennedy. Dr. Heiser takes much of the historical evidence and ancient understanding of the world into consideration in all of his books. This is a good introduction to him, but don’t stop here! Reversing Hermon, Unseen Realm, Angels, Demons, and The Bible Unfiltered are also excellent books. ... show more

  • Enlightening
Format: Kindle
Any serious study of the Bible requires historical insight not available in the text only. This book offers perspective into some of the traditions and beliefs of Biblical times. Utilizing well researched material found in this book can help make the ancient stories more relevant and relatable.

  • It's Michael Heiser.
Format: Paperback
Very interesting. Lots of short essays. Prepare to learn something you didn't expect.

  • Good and enlightening book
Format: Kindle
This is a good book, in the tradition of the other excellent Michael Heiser books. Its short chapters make it an easy read, and for the most part open your eyes to a lot of what Scripture really means versus what many of us have been taught. No, it's not "out there", but consists of sound exegesis of selected Scriptural text. My only disappointment with the book is that not all chapters come to a conclusion about some difficult passages. So while reading the book I had to get used to not getting all the answers I was looking for. Still a worthwhile read, though. ... show more

  • It just simply doesn't get any better than Heiser!
Format: Paperback
This book is great, but it leaves you praying for so much more! If you haven't read his fictional books The Facade and The Portent, I'd strongly recommend that as well. While they are fiction, they could almost be used as reference works as well. I discovered Dr. Heiser's work about a year ago and since then I think I can honestly say that I've watched every single one of his YouTube/Vimeo videos as well as reading a great deal of what he has written. On his homepage, drmsh.com, there's a link to his resume/CV. This document lists pretty much everything he's ever written, where to find it, and whether it was written for the laity or the scholar. In early 2015 Dr. Heiser will have two new non-fiction books coming out--the answer to the prayer in the first line of this review! Until then, I strongly recommend you find these CD/DVD sets while you're waiting for the new books to come out. To find these resources, simply copy and paste the title into Google and the 1st result should be where you want to go. Also, the purchase of these products goes to support a valuable ministry. 1.) Exploring Ancient Truths in the Context of their Biblical Foundations A Biblical look at God's divine counsel and how His heavenly system of governance impacts mankind, especially God's children. 2.) From Chaos to Restoration Heiser An enlightening and thorough overview of the conflict between the realms of darkness and light from before creation to the end of time. To summarize: Once again, Heiser is the best. I strongly recommend reading/watching/listening to literally everything Dr. Heiser has done. This is the program I would follow, the first three are on Amazon, and #4 and #5 you can find to purchase with Google. 1.) The Facade 2.) The Portent 3.) I Dare You Not to Bore Me with the Bible 4.) Exploring Ancient Truths in the Context of their Biblical Foundations 5.) From Chaos to Restoration Heiser Now, go to YouTube and Vimeo, type in "Michael Heiser," and literally watch everything. Short update: I asked Dr. Heiser by email what he thought of the above order of material I've listed, and this was the response for those who are interested. "The honest answer is to wait for the non-fiction books, which will appear in Feb-March 2015...In their absence, it's best to read through the content on my divine council site (starting with the first item listed)...After that you could hit I Dare You...I'm not sure about items 4 and 5 on your list since I didn't create the discs...The fiction introduces small nuggets of divine council theology and its implications, piggy-backed onto supernatural / paranormal fiction. They could be read any time." ... show more
