Description

The Sofa Rule proposes Biblical resolutions to seeming paradoxes considered historically by Calvinism, Arminianism, the problem of evil, open theism, and more. The Sofa Rule examines what the Bible says, compares that with popular philosophical views and theological understandings, and then considers why these things matter for everyday life. Designed as a college or seminary textbook, The Sofa Rule is written in a popular style accessible even to those unfamiliar with the controversies, who simply want to understand how God can be sovereign while people have choice at the same time. The Sofa Rule strives to be a practical handbook, challenging its readers to action, and not simply intellectual exercise in philosophy, theology, and worldview. Read more

  • Very Refreshing Perspective on the sovereignty vs. Free will debate
Format: Kindle
I thought the book was really great, and provides a really great perspective on the tension between God's sovereignty and our responsibility. Dr. Cone refuses to join any specific "side" of the argument, but rather just looks at what Scripture says. This has really given me a fresh look at this topic, a topic that I have wrestled with for years. A few of the sections are a little hard to understand, as they use some big words and terms that I had a hard time understanding, but other than some difficulty there, the book was really great. ... show more

  • Sovereignty and free will are compatible
Format: Paperback
I don't know that I will ever fully comprehend this side of Heaven how God's sovereignty and man's free will work and that is perfectly fine. This book gets me much closer however and provides many examples of both working at the same time. The author does a great job proving out that it isn't an either or proposition. I appreciated the logical approach to the conclusions made and the use of Scripture to make and defend the conclusions. I also find it refreshing how the author graciously disagrees with others. There are no personal attacks. There is firm conviction on Chris' part without belittling. ... show more

  • Eat the meat and spit out the bones.
Format: Paperback
I had never heard of Dr Come until a friend recommended this book to me so I decided to give it a read. The book is broken into small chapters that are essentially papers or articles that Cone has written. While I agree with several of Cones positions on several subjects (I especially appreciated his approach to refutes the LGBTQ’s attempt to biblically justify homosexuality). However, most of Cones theological underpinnings concerning any difficult subject matter seems to be from the perspective that because of Gods omnipotence, God can do anything he wants. Meaning he can make up the rules as He sees fit. This seems to make God out to be very arbitrary and capricious. Cone seems to overemphasize omnipotence above Gods Holiness and Benevolence. ... show more

  • A biblical approach indeed.
Format: Paperback
The subtitle of this book is "A Biblical Approach..." and that is what it is. The framing of multiple issues from a literal, grammatical historical hermeneutic. While there is very much here to fill the tummy of the hungry, chapter 23 "Is God a Jerk?" was my personal pivot. In it Cone asks, "who's perspective will we trust?" and for me that focus leads to the satisfaction and security of a heart that proclaims Holy Holy Holy! ... show more

  • The author does not provide a view that’s any different from Reformed Theology
Format: Kindle
I was hoping for a new outlook on Sovereignty vs Man’s Choices, but this view says they’re both important. Duh. That isn’t really any different from the Calvinist or Reformed view. They say that both are important, but it’s how they interact that is a mystery. The sofa rule says they interact, but sometimes it’s one way and at other times it’s a different way....we already know that! I’m frustrated that I spent $10 on this book! ... show more
