  • High Value for Such a Cheap Product
This product is cheap, and as far as I can tell, that's not a bad thing this time. It plays NES games very well, with some noticeable but minor issues. Rest assured, the issues are small and this product is well worth the tiny price tag! For those interested in more detail, check below. Let's talk good things about the system; it's tiny! It's very small, basically the size of two NES games laid on top of each other (3 at the most). It definitely works! I've played it very heavily for several days now and I'm loving this thing! I've been playing with friends as well, and they've also been impressed. Using old NES controllers definitely works great, but I actually really like the new turbo controllers too! They are a bit different from the classics, but the turbo functions can be very nice in brawlers and such. Just FYI, the picture makes the controllers look wireless, but they aren't. Ok, time to talk bad things. There are some bad things, but they are not a huge deal, especially considering the price tag of this thing. the Retron 1 is cheap, as mentioned. This is definitely a reflection of the build quality; be gentle with it, it is definitely not rock-solid! The best way to put in a game is to gently push in one side of the cartridge, then the other. Original NES controllers fit more snugly than the new controllers do, so push those in slowly as well. The power cord and AV cables are also very cheap, but they work just fine (also, the power adapter is very small; a hidden plus). The controllers feel very cheap, yet are unexpectedly responsive. However, one of my turbo buttons on one controller is very stiff; it still works, but it doesn't give when you push on it. It's like an Atari 2600 joystick, if you have ever experienced one. So I'm not thrilled about that, but it's not a huge deal since it still works. The worst problem with the system isn't so bad because it applies to pretty much ALL NES clone systems; the NOAC. NOAC, for those who don't know, stands for Nintendo-On-A-Chip. This is the heart and soul of the system; this is what mimics the NES and allows the games to play. The problem with this is that it's all jammed on one little chip and everything is compressed and has to be de-compressed then to work. The de-compression causes a range of issues, from minor sound and graphical issues to game incompatibility. Now I personally do not have a game that does not work with it, but I've heard that Castlevania III does not work on it, and that Kirby's Adventure has very bad sound issues. I have only noted minor sound issues; the occasional note will be off a bit. I find this more funny than annoying because it is pretty rare and not obtrusive. Some colors can be a bit off, and that's a bit more annoying, but not in every game and it's not like the colors are negative or anything. One thing I found particularly interesting is that the image actually looks better on larger TV's than smaller ones. For instance, when I play it on my 19" TV, it doesn't look as good as when I play it on a 32" TV, or even a 47" TV. This brings me to another problem; I have a 32" TV, but I cannot get it to work on it. The problem is that my composite inputs use the component inputs, and consequently the component channel on my tv is also the composite channel, but the output signal is not strong enough that the TV switches to composite. So I am getting an RF Modulator and hopefully this can rectify the situation by using a completely different input. On the subject of larger TV's, I was very surprised with the video quality on larger TVs! I have used it on two different 32" TVs and one 47" TV, and I was very satisfied with the image quality! All things considered, this is a really great product for the price! Even if it were more expensive, I would be happy with the playability and gameplay quality; I would just have a problem with how cheap it feels and how gentle I have to be with it. But a little gentility is a small price to pay for being able to play these old gems in a reliable fashion! If you happen to receive a dud unit, I think it would be worth returning for another one; mine plays games very well and I'm very happy with it. ... show more

  • Simple Review
After finally willing to lay down some cash for a NES clone system I decided to go ahead and try out the Retron 1. Overall I must say that I am pleased with the product. I was surprised how small the system is, roughly the same size as two stacked NES carts. The system is very light but seems solidly built. The controls, while being light, feel comfortable in my hands. And the addition of the two turbo buttons and the slow feature are nice to have. For use on more modern TV's it works fine but remember it can only output mono sound so if you want simulated stereo make sure to buy an audio Y-cable that will allow you to plug in both L and R audio jacks. I will see how long this system last but my biggest concern is that it grips the games rather tightly, like playing tug of war with medium sized dog, hopefully the pins hold up well. At least now I can hopefully accomplish my childhood dream of defeating the Technodrome which still haunts me to this day. ... show more

  • Excellent for NES Fans
Before I start, know that this isn't some company posted review to push product. Be sure to read the guidelines I listed at the bottom however as you'll need them to get the best experience out of this item. Having said that, if you have old NES Games, but are having trouble playing them on your old side loading NES, this is the perfect item for you. For those that don't know, old NES Systems (the side loading ones) have a chip in them that blocked out unlicensed NES Carts and the side loading feature can actually make it harder over time to load a Game correctly. Yes, blowing in it isn't the solution. This device is excellent for playing NES Games. In addition to being a top loading system, it lacks the special chip that blocks unlicensed Game Carts allowing you to play Game Carts whose own chips couldn't sync up with the NES'. I tried this thing with several of my games including ones that wouldn't start up easily anymore and they now work great! Now, granted, this is a very lightweight and easily breakable system, and this is the second one I got because I sort of screwed up the first one I got last year. So read the Guidelines below. GUIDELINES FOR USE: 1) Ease NES Carts in so you don't bust the connector pins in the system or the system itself. 2) While this system does support the NES Zapper, be aware that the Zapper may not work on newer televisions due in part to a time delay between what's shown on the TV and what the Zapper picks up on it after the trigger is pulled. 3) Only use the AC Power Cord that's supplied with the system. On the first Retron System I got, I tried using the Power Cord from my Original NES to save time dealing with wires. It fried the Retron System, so I can't stress it enough, only use the Power Cord included! 4) Don't blow into your NES Carts or the system. In reality, it may seem to work, but it only damages the connector pins over time. --Bill-- ... show more

  • 1st unit did not work at all - replacement unit does
The media could not be loaded. Quick display of the out of the box failure of the Hyperkin Retron 1 system... Very disappointing. Spoke with the tech support and was told that some batches of these are just defective. Amazon is sending a replacement... I will post another review once I see if the replacement works or not Update 8/10/2011: Amazon has shipped me a replacement and it works perfectly. I did receive a defective one initially. Amazon customer service is tops as I got the replacement within 2 days of submitting my request. Just have to mail the old one back. So there was some hassle with this and I guess there is always the potential you can get multiple faulty units... but I am finally satisfied. The Retron system plays every game I have perfectly upon first try. The colors are a bit brighter than the original NES (not always a good thing) and the controls are decent. I would recommend this, but be prepared to send back defective units. ... show more
