  • Use as an reference book
Format: Paperback
Being a novice to this area, I found the layout of information very helpful. First of all, the book does not give ready formulas but rather tries to convey the mindset of the technician. The first two chapters start with safety information and principles of heat transfer before going into basics of electricity, equipment, and superheat/subcooling. In addition, troubleshooting plays, such as the section on no-cooling and the one on frozen coils, do not have a textbook-like approach but rather contain more detailed explanations and information as if written by an experienced instructor, with specific voltages checked and delta-Ts measured instead of generalized instructions. Pictures and drawings are included on almost each page, which is extremely convenient while trying to figure out the appearance of some devices, such as capacitors and reversing valves. The layout is text-heavy and repetitive; thus, it makes sense to use it as a reference book more often than to read it through from cover to cover at once. Moreover, it stays honest in mentioning its limitations and does not claim that this book can replace certification and practical experience. ... show more

  • An Excellent Starting Point for Anyone Entering the HVAC Trade
Format: Paperback
HVAC Made Simple for Beginners: A Visual, Step-by-Step Guide for Anyone Breaking Into the HVAC Trade is an excellent resource for students, apprentices, and career changers who want to develop a strong foundation in HVAC without becoming overwhelmed by technical terminology. What makes this book especially effective is its visual, step-by-step approach. HVAC concepts can be difficult for beginners to understand from text alone, but this guide presents the material in a practical way that helps readers connect technical principles with what they may actually encounter in the field. I particularly appreciated the emphasis on learning to think like a technician rather than simply memorizing information. The troubleshooting guidance encourages readers to approach problems systematically—observing symptoms, considering possible causes, and developing the critical-thinking skills necessary for effective diagnosis. The book also does a great job of connecting classroom knowledge with real-world application. The explanations are approachable, the progression of topics feels logical, and the focus on hands-on skills makes the material relevant for anyone preparing to enter the skilled trades. This would be a valuable supplemental resource for HVAC students, apprentices, instructors, and individuals considering HVAC as a career. It helps make a complex trade feel understandable and achievable while reinforcing the importance of developing both technical knowledge and problem-solving skills. A practical, accessible, and confidence-building introduction to HVAC that helps beginners move beyond simply learning the terminology toward actually thinking and troubleshooting like a technician. • Visual and practical
Format: Paperback
I gifted this book to my building maintenance worker as a small detail - he’s the one who always ends up fixing everyone’s ACs in the middle of summer, climbing on the roof under the sun. I thought a book made for practical people like him would make more sense than a generic gift card. By hovering over it before wrapping it, I loved the practicality of the format: icons in the margin that mark "expected values" and "how it looks good vs. bad done," plus a weekly study routine and a step-by-step method ("On-Call Five": Lookup, Verify, Test, Note, Confirm) easy to follow. ... show more

I picked up HVAC Made Simple for Beginners for my husband. He usually tries to fix things himself before paying someone to do the work. I like that the book includes a large section on safety measures. My husband found some parts of it helpful.
