Used on a kayak, the competing products were either not water resistant or looked cheap. This unit is very bright and works well. The downside is it has no power on board, it is designed to be used on boats with 12v electric systems. I found a rechargeable 12v lithium battery at Jameco that is small enough to mount on the back of the unit. I don't know how long it will run the device for, I have only used it twice, so far. I was able to modify a Go Pro mount to attach the console on my kayak, and will make a smaller simpler mount next week. I was also able to modify Go Pro hardware to make a swinging mount for the sending unit. I machined customized beam to do that. I shortened the power cable, that's a simple task. Next I needed to remove 20 feet of sensor cable, shortening it to about four feet. I called Humminbird tech support, and got a fairly prompt reply. But that reply surprised me- the tech said no the cable can't be shortened, I asked why. They had no idea why, just said it would not work. I tried to get to other techs, thinking maybe I got a novice. One said well maybe it will work, but we don't recommend it. I said why, is it a capacitance issue, a shielding issue, inductance? Crickets. I cut fifteen feet out of the cable, carefully splicing it (two splices, I didn't look real hard but could not find the connectors) and tested it on the water. It looked fine in my first short test, I will continue to test. I would not recommend shortening the cables unless you know what you are doing- staggered lap joints, three layers of shrink sleeving, splice the ground and ensure the shielding is maintained over the entire repair. I would give Humminbird serious points off, first for the idiotic spelling of their name, second for a device that wasn't designed to be used on a kayak and third for a laughable tech support group- they don't know the product. ... show more

Ad says that it "does not come with battery". It says "12V LITHIUM BATTERY REQUIRED". I purchased a small battery ($20.00) and a charger for it. This unit does not have to have a separate 12V battery. It comes with a cable to connect to boats electrical system. Info I could not pull up anywhere including Hummingbirds internet site. I hard wired it in like I do all of my electronics on my boat, however, now I'm stuck with a $20.00 battery and a $12.00 charger that I have no use for and cannot return per Amazon. ... show more

Been using humminbird for ever, bought a cheap fish finder from lucky laker hated it. Bought a piranhamax4 just for ice fishing and love it. Rig it up on my toolbox that I use for ice fishing. Best purchase ever for a fish finder for ice fishing especially in North Dakota

I'll have to hand it to the (expletive deleted) sadistic SoB who designed the packaging, may the fleas of a thousand camels take up residence in his/her underwear. Scissors didn't work, my pocket knife didn't work. I finally resorted to a metal cutter (tin snip) to cut the package open.
