The printer works very well. I printed b/w, scanned using both flat bed and tray, same with coping. I did not print photos with it yet. All worked well. I was disappointed with the ink usage with the cartridges that come with the printer. Hopefully the XLs will last MUCH longer. The 2 XL HP cartridges cost more than the printer! It would be less expensive to buy the printer, use the ink that comes with it and when they are empty, throw out the printer and buy a new one!!! This is totally crazy. I will buy the non-HP ink at less than have the cost. Some say that using the non-HP ink will foul the printer and ink heads after a while. But with the cost of HP ink, if the printer is fouled after 2 years, the savings on ink will more than pay for several new printers. Updated review I added a star to my previous review. I've used this for 3 months now. It still uses expensive HP ink! However, I use the HP63XL cartridges and I get relatively longer life. I now have used all printer functions; printing plain paper, color 4x6 and 5x7 prints, flat and feeder scanning and coping. All with very good results. I print 4 8x11 plain paper printings a day and printed 60 4x6 photos for Christmas cards. It printed flawlessly, no jams or other error messages. I have not tried non HP ink yet, will wait another year and if the ink heads foul after a year, I will upgrade with the cost savings I am 4 star satisfied, 1 star withheld for the ink cost. Updated to 5 star! I now have been using over 2 years. I print with it almost every day. The 5th star because of flawless operation. I switched to non HP print for much less cost. After well over 1 year of such use, the non HP print cartridges have always been accepted.

Just a style update ? Not even close. I upgraded from a Officejet 4635. I’ve seen reviews stating that HP just updated the appearance and there’s not much different. Not true. In actuality the update in appearance has more to do with functionality then aesthetic’s, i’ll start at the top. On my old unit the fax and copy feeder tray stayed open to collect dust, on the new unit they hinged the tray so you can close it to keep dust and debris out. The same holds true for the paper tray on the bottom, on the old unit the paper tray was open to the environment the new unit has its own door that senses when you’ve opened it. When you’re printing the only thing you see is paper coming out of the feed. But what really surprised me is the new interface & operating system. The new user interface communicates back-and-forth with your phone or device from the time you plug it in right through the configuration. That combined with a nifty touchscreen makes setting changes intuitive and quick. I hated the old HP ios app, it was almost useless. In fact I had deleted it off my phone and used a third-party printing app. The updated version gets two thumbs up, apparently somebody who actually used the printer re-designed the app, it seriously works good. As far as connectivity they’ve updated that too! The printer has dual band Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5ghz. Hp updated a lot inside & out and everything they’ve done make for a better more useful tool. I’m not necessarily a fan of Hewlett Packard, I’ve had my problems in the past and have owned and still own other brands of printers. I have mostly Apple stuff, it’s worked flawlessly in all modes. I do have a widows 10 laptop & it was just as smooth and simple to configure. All in all I’m very pleased & looking forward to a HP all in one “TANK” printer in the near future. I am not in anyway associated with this product or any product or seller. I received nothing in return for my review, I Purchased this product out of need. I recommend this product.

I bought this item as a gift for my parents. I will say the setup itself is pretty straight forward. But, not so depending on what a persons understanding of computers is. There are limited instructions with the printer. They suggest to go to a website which walks you through. Generally, this is not needed at all. But, I found that you needed to go to it for some reason to complete the setup for some reason. Usually you can set it up via windows or IOS on its own. Especially on newer versions. But, I did have to use their website to get it fully functional. Printer itself is very good! Print quality for us was very good so far. I will say that construction components of this unit seem incredibly cheaper than other HP printers I have owned in the past. A flimsy paper feed tray and an even more flimsy paper finished print tray that collapses within the unit when not in use. I get it. The folks is to cheapen components to get the most $$ for manufacturing costs. But, in theory you’d like to feel better about components such as this as they are the ones that are stressed more than others in daily use. I’d recommend this item. But, suggest that if it’s for someone older or not as experienced in computers that someone helps them with setup. I cannot speak to any CS help. I did not need it. I will say what others have about their ink program. You can opt out and you should. You can find HP cartidges on amazon or brick and mortar stores cheaper than this program. I bought knock off versions for my folks to use when the limited starter ink cartridges go out. I’d suggest this printer.

Great printer with small footprint. Print quality is photo perfect. We signed up for the instant ink for $9.99/300 pages! It looks the the 1st 4 months are free, that’s what the app says and we have not been charged. Initial cartridges run out quick but, we had new ones the day after the color started running out. When printing photographs the price is unbeatable. We print checks and envelopes etc.. Printed all of the xmas cards this year! They came out perfect for less. Just keep in mind a full color 8x10 Print costs the same as printing the letter ‘A’. Didn’t try the scanner. But you use it to align the printer. Not sure if they ding you for the alignment printout. Only printed on best quality, there is one Quality higher, used everyday hp photo gloss and they look as good as any photo prints I’ve seen. Printed from desktop, iphone and printer direct connect with no problems. printing from iPhone was easiest with best results. Did not print through the HP app. Found the Hp instant ink vs their app t be confusing. I just use the instant ink website and it tells you how many prints left and when they’re sending the next ink. Not the faster printer in the world but printed about 50 5x7’s in about 35 mins. HP Instant ink sends you a return bag for your used cartridges. If you buy ink cartridges more than once a year and print every week instant ink is worth it!

For the money you can't go wrong on this printer. It's a great printer for home or student. I use this printer in my electrical business and it works great. From photo's to black and white documents this printer makes crisp clear prints with no smudges. Your also able to set up any print job using the control panel on the front of the printer. It has a document feeder on top which means you just lay your original in the feeder and it pulls it through without having to open the lid. It will also print both sides this way without having to run it through the feeder twice. You can use it on you private network, an open WiFi network if your OK with that, use the wireless direct feature or the USB port (CABLE NOT INCLUDED) if you need or want to connect right to you PC. I've tried using all of these methods with no problems. I used several Print From Phone apps and all had no problems getting the job done and each app allowed you to adjust advanced settings. The apps have all been for Android phones so I can't comment on iPhones since I don't use those. The printer does come with black and color ink but very limited on how many pages you can print with them. I replaced those with the XL cartages soon after buying the printer but to date I haven't had to change those. The tech support is another story. I've had this printer for over 6 months now and I haven't had to call for support but my past HP printers I have. 1st like any tech support be ready to spend at least an hour on the phone since your transferred several times and with each transfer you get to wait on average no less than 10 minutes waiting on the next person to answer. When you finally get the right person they spend most of there time trying to sale you on the HP Instant Ink program. This where you " pay a monthly fee to print a defined number of pages per month and any additional pages you print that exceed your plan pages for the month will cost more". Unless you want to just waste money DO NOT AGREE TO THIS NO MATTER HOW GOOD THEY MAKE IT SOUND! We all know that the ink is where companies make there money but when you start paying by the page, it really gets expensive. The last time I had to call HP's tech support, I went through all the transfers and wait times just to get beat up over this Instant Ink program. After telling this guy no to that at least 10X's, he ask if he could transfer me to his manager to give feedback on his help and I agreed. I wanted to tell his manager that when ask about Instant Ink program that no means no. I have no idea if this was his manager or not but it was like buying a new car. This guy ask me nothing about the tech's help he was just someone else that tried to get me enrolled in the Instant Ink program and he wouldn't take no for an answer either so I had to just hung up. One last comment about HP's tech support, I don't know if other printer companies are the same since I've always bought HP but be ready to ask them to repeat themselves over and over because they are not well trained in speaking english. To sum it up; YES they fixed my problems each and every time but be ready to spend a good bit of time talking about every service they offer vrs. your problems. I'm just glad that I've had no problems with this printer to date.

Had this printer for a little over a year now. Endless aggravation. The only way to make it work is to unplug/re-plug the power every time you need it. Same issue with every PC in the house. Will work immediately, but once it sits for a while, you have to unplug it. Power 'button' doesn't help. Seems like it goes coma once it sleeps. It sits a few feet from the WiFi router so connectivity isn't an issue. Software is a massive pile of bloat that tangles in some way with almost every machine I've installed it on. Have had to uninstall/re-install software and re-add the printer on all machines at some point just to print. Many times printer discovery returns the printer, but next 'Add' steps throw errors. And, the only time the printer is discoverable is in the first minute or two after power on. Controls are not good. The flaky little touchscreen is so tiny that unless you have fingertips the size of a pencil eraser, good luck. Some icons/selections require sliding/scrolling to reach, but you have to touch displayed icons to scroll - thus launching the displayed icon. Endless touch-back-touch-back. Many setup/configuration settings will only PRINT - They cannot be viewed on the screen. Print quality is so-so. It's a cheap ink jet so the unevenness and fuzzyness are somewhat expected. Ink cartridge replacement almost always requires several attempts and/or power off/on to get past errors. Also, beware of the Instant Ink feature. Once you sign up, expect to get frequent solicitation emails. Not just from HP, but from other 'affiliates'. Opting out once you're in doesn't stop them all. And, there are many reports of people being excessively charged for ink the did or didn't use, 'overages', or having issues with their account that 'locks' the printer. Also, if you enroll, get some ink, then cancel, any ink they sent that you're using stops working instantly. IMO, stay away. The amount of time spent trying to resolve issues is ridiculous. Dozens of hours burned to print maybe a couple hundred pages. Cost per page is enormous considering time spent. It's disappointing watching HP create ever worse products as they create more 'features', but ignore core functionality. I was a loyal HP customer. Had a an old LJ 4M that ran fine for almost 15 years and probably printed 50,000 pages with nothing but cartridge replacements & occasional cleaning. Have had a succession of Pavilion laptops that were champs. This 5255's predecessor was an OfficeJet 4500 series that ran OK for 3-4 years before dying. But, when this unit's current ink supply runs out, it's into the dumpster.

My last hp printer gave out and I really didn't want to learn how to use a different model. But that model was no longer available. I couldn't find anything I liked locally so I ordered this one after reading the reviews. It was delivered quickly. I let it sit for a few days because I was nervous about the set up. But it was quick and easy to get it going. I print shipping labels on a daily basis. I did have to move it close to the wifi equipment to get it to work properly. I normally use my laptop in the bedroom but the printer wasn't reliable that far from the wifi signal. One other time it didn't work when a guest was in the same room and was using the wifi for his phone. Now, I am certainly uneducated about wifi signals, although I get by using my lap top and phone all the time. Since, I put the printer and lap top in the same room as the wifi equipment, I have had no problems. I did have a problem once with a paper jam but was able to get it out with no serious problem. Overall, I am very happy with the ease of use and the print quality. I occasionally print off 35 double sided pages of booklets. It prints much faster than my last printer. I would buy it again and I thought the price was reasonable.
