Top Amazon Reviews

  • Easy installation, good prints.
Size: One size
I just installed this and am giving it a provisional five stars because of the ease of installation, the quality of the prints and the $69 price. I might revisit this review if problems crop up later. But set up was incredibly easy and I was printing wirelessly from my iMac and iPhone within an hour. If fact, if I hadn't walked away while the drivers were downloading, it could have gone quicker. This installation was done on a late 2009 iMac running High Sierra. Basically, you just plug in the printer and turn it on. Remove the tape on the paper tray and a small piece of protective cardboard from inside the printer. Then go to HP's install site at 123.hp.com. (You can also do part of this directly from the printer if you want, but I think it's easier on the computer). The install program will prompt you on how to properly install the ink and paper. There are helpful videos. The only thing that tripped me up was when it came time to generate a test print for the scanner. The install prompt said to click "ok" on the printer's tiny touch screen. But all I could see on the screen were prompts for my country and language. But, even though you will have already answered those on the website, answer them again on your printer's touch screen, and then you'll get to the "ok" prompt. Once you're done, you still will have to tell your iMac - and I assume PC - that you have a new printer. That was easy. The iMac saw it and I just made it the new default printer. On my iPhone I downloaded the HP Smart app from the Apple App Store. It was easy to print photos from my library. I did get a little confused when I was setting up to print email. It said it would send me a pin to complete the process and never did. Yet, when I checked my iPhone it saw the printer and printed out an email. Go figure. Maybe these instructions were for an older model. Two other things: You will come to one of those privacy agreements at the end of the set up. Make sure you read them. I opted out of letting them monitor my printer or sending me updates. Also, I did not sign up for HP's instant ink program. It didn't look like it would save me that much money, given both the privacy and flexibility I'd be giving up. The cheapest plan is $3 a month -- $36 a year -- and allows you 100 pages a month. My printing needs are light, but there are times I might go over 100 a month. And replacement cartridges are $27 on Amazon. It just didn't make budget sense and it's allowing a backdoor into some of your most private documents. HP might not care, but a hacker might. Hope this helps! ... show more

  • Superb Printer & Instant Ink is a Great Bonus!
Size: One size
My HP Office Jet which I have had for several years or more bit the dust. I looked and researched many printers and decided on the HP Envy. I did not need a fax component so was glad when the HP Envy showed up as a basic home printer minus the fax. You can scan and copy. I am glad to say, this printer fits my needs. It prints and produces good quality. I do not normally print photos, however, with the use of Instant Ink which I signed up for, I might start doing that now since I am being charged per page and not by ink use. Yes, I am quite happy with Instant Ink. I received two months free of up to 300 pages per month along with buying a $5 pre-paid card which also will be deducted once the two months runs out. Sweet deal, I say. I can check my printing status just by going to the HP Instant Ink website. How cool is that? My wife and I have not been printing much lately, however, that might change by having the Instant Ink program. In the past, I would try to print in black and white to conserve color toner. Now, I am free to blast off and use color or black and white. The HP Envy has a quiet mode which I have tried and it is indeed quieter than the normal mode. Nice feature to have if you are printing in the early morning hours and want to keep the noise level down a bit. I am connected via WiFi and have not experienced any connection issues. Set up took about 5-10 minutes. Make sure you have the WiFi password and you are good to go. I don't know what to say about those who have left negative reviews. This HP Envy works like a charm and having the Instant Ink is a great bonus! I bought this printer on my own. There was no company endorsement or any of those shenanigans. My review is my own and not because I got a printer for free. ... show more

  • The instant ink program is a total nightmare
Size: One size
This is a great printer when you have ink. The ink it is shipped with worked beautifully. My Instant ink replacement came & neither cartridge worked. I spent hours on the community page finding out that this is a common problem (long long thread) and went through all the fixes except take part of printer out and wash it in dishwashing liquid! do not do. 1 hour in the community help, 2.5 hours waiting for and going through chat - everything on my end correct. Sending one color & 1 black replacement. Ordered Feb 22 told I would receive by March 1st. Got March 2nd - kind of a long wait only to find that they had sent 2 color cartridges! So chat support AGAIN. They'll send out yet another replacement black ink which will take 8-10 days!! I have established that I have no black ink, am printing legal documents, have wasted hours & hours etc. They are happy to send it expedited delivery & I get to pay for it. After yet more time waiting for a supervisor they sent me one black ink cartridge 'expedited delivery "free of charge'. Insert new cartridge sent from HP, get message "you have installed a non HP cartridge" So, not knowing whether to cry or drink - I am back on the HP support chat. Explain issue. Their comment "you have a non-HP cartridge installed that will interfere with accurate supply on your instant ink program" AGAIN - 'NO, I did NOT buy the cartridge, HP sent me the cartridge from your inventory - your records must show this was shipped" SUPPORT Finally "they sent you the wrong cartridge the one you have is a retail cartridge not instant ink" so the score is 3 out of 3 screwed up black ink replacements, hours on forums and chats & essentially a 2 week wait for ink. If this replacement cartridge is actually the right one and works I'll faint. Replacing the right ink is basic customer service - supply what customer ordered and paid in advance for. This is baseline. EPIC FAIL 3/3 HP chat - another hour. Will send another cartridge (hopefully a black one that works) and you'll get it on the 15th. Unless I would like to pay $4. for expedited shipping! If you are on the HP instant ink plan you can't buy a cartridge to tide you over as they won't work. You can print only with 1 color cartridge as black but that's not sustainable if you are printing legal documents during WFH - its too frustrating for a very simple plan that you pay for monthly in advance, where you get the ink you need to do your work. My plan should work after I ever get a black ink that works - we will see. ... show more

  • BEYOND THRILLED!
Size: One size
I am so excited to share my experience with this product. I rarely write reviews but after finishing set up of this printer in less than 1/2 hour, and then using it, I am compelled to share. The printer that this HP 5055 is replacing is a Canon Pixma MX922 that we have had for 4 years. For 4 years, that printer has been a problem: not remaining connected to our very stable wifi connection, paper jams, error codes, very slow and noisy. After setting up the HP 5055, I now realize that we should have replaced the Canon long ago, just hadn't because the Canon still technically "works". After reading reviews I set up the HP with my Android phone (go to google play-download HPsmart app) , unpackaged and plugged in the printer, opened the app on my phone (it automatically found the printer!), followed the instructions in the app, and it was good to go! Printed my first documents a half hour after unboxing! No set-up snags! Not one! I am beyond thrilled! A few suggestions: 1. Know your wifi password, you will need that. 2. Follow the instructions on your phone's app and on the printer's screen exactly, do not try to skip steps. 3. Sign up for the free instant ink, you can always cancel it for free within 2 months. Don't try to bypass the instant ink sign up because, per other reviewers, trying to bypass that step caused set-up troubles. 3. You will need a few sheets of clean printer paper to run the alignment test and scan it (platen to right front corner-this will make sense when you go scan the alignment page). 4. During set up, the app on your pone will offer short videos of how to insert ink cartridges and complete alignment and other processes. Press play and watch these if you are unsure of process. 5. You can add tablets, laptops and/or desktop computers any time after set-up with your phone (iPhone or Android), just follow the instructions. I am a not-so-tech-savvy 49 year old and it was easy for me. Just follow directions slowly and carefully and don't bypass steps. After set up on the phone, I opened my Chromebook, downloaded the app from PLAY STORE (not google play), opened the app, and voila the app found the printer and it was ready to print from! Then, I followed a similar process but with my iMac, and that works too! Then the Samsung tablet-yes! Seamless wifi connecting! The only wire needed is the one that plugs the printer into the wall outlet. I nearly giggled with glee. It is not very often that tech products are user friendly as I have found this one to be. I hope you have similar success. One thing to note, when I purchased on Amazon, a photo in the listing stated the printer is bluetooth compatible but I have not found that function. I did want that function, but really do not need it AS LONG AS wifi is working. Also note, you may connect a limit of 5 devices wirelessly. Third note, if you plan to connect the printer WIRED to your desktop computer, there are no ethernet or other cables in the box. You would need to purchase those separately. Have yet to see how much ink will cost us, but we really do not print much so hopefully ink will not break the bank. Best of luck to you with this product! ... show more

Update: Still loving this printer (fairly heavy home use) and really impressed with Insta Ink. I've received my ink packs in plenty of time. Actually pretty impressed that HP reads my ink level remotely and takes care of things so efficiently. It's a clever, convenient and money saving idea and very simple to set up (I was leery, so glad I went for it). No issues whatsoever. I call this printer a bargain. OK, lot's of reviews in here re trouble with setup. Here's my experience: Got this printer 40 minutes ago. Set up was SO easy. I didn't look at a manual or have any issues at all - just did what the app and printer touchscreen told me to do. The "1-2-3" thing. I'm running High Sierra on my Mac laptop and wanted to install it there and not on iphone. Following instructions as they pop up gives you that option. Followed directions, downloaded app, opened it, and continued. It found and connected to wireless in about 5 seconds. If you've got the repaid Insta-Ink just have your pin handy. I got it because a friend loves hers and has used it for years with no problems. You have to set up an account somewhere along the line, remember your password because you need it again. I WILL say it feels kind of worrisome because they keep having you link to different sites to fill out different stuff, and there are a bunch of little sub-steps, but just go along with the flow and keep track a bit and it all comes together. And I'm 70 - pretty handy on my Mac but not particularly good at setting new stuff up. No trouble seeing the touchscreen with my old eyes. It prints from everywhere on my laptop including ICloud - I don't want to print from my iphone so no idea on that. Computer found printer with no difficulty. Just have to affirm that it's the right one. Snagged a little on first scan, worked second try, no idea. scanner is working very well. Print quality and (slowish) speed and build (I wouldn't want to, like, drop it) is fine for $99. Haven't got Insta-Ink yet, so dunno if that will be timely but it's a great deal, actually. I WILL update if there are problems down the road, but this is a very nice start. I actually bought a cable thinking it might be too much PIA to bother going wireless - meh. Nice not being tethered. Nice little super cheap home computer, very Mac compatible. Edit - re Insta Ink. I did a LOT of heavy ink printing during the first week of owning this printer. Got my (larger) cartridges exactly on time to replace the spent ones. These will last longer than the ones included with the computer purchase. For me, so far, this whole process has been very smooth and easy. It's probably a good idea to have one extra set of cartridges on hand to cover any delays in shipping that could happen, but I expect to save money with this program. Love this little budget printer. ... show more

  • Good little printer for the price. Easy set-up
Size: One size
I only just received this printer yesterday so this is an initial review. I cannot yet attest to the longevity of the printer, however it was extremely quick and easy to set up. I wanted to address that because, before I purchased it, I read quite a few negative reviews about the set up. I simply plugged it in and turned it on, then went to the HP website as directed and followed the prompts from there. Printer app was installed and printer was recognized on both my laptop and phone within 10 minutes. ***Note: I also read a few complaints about having to sign up for Instant Ink in order to complete the printer setup. This is not true, you can skip the entire HP registration process and go straight to the driver installation. The "skip" option is on the top right when you reach that point.*** Prints cleanly, no issues with the paper tray, just don't fill it up too full. The paper tray area is a bit flimsy, but that's kind of to be expected for a price under $50.00. Just be gentle with it. 5 stars for my initial review. Will do an update after a few months of use. ... show more

  • Self-Cleaning and CHEAP Ink!
Size: One size
I bought this five years ago and just went out of my way to write a review because I'm blown away by how reliable this thing has been! It has so many smart features, including being able to clean the cartridges on its own. I just had poor printing quality with tons of gaps on my pages, and used their self-cleaning mode about 5 times and now the quality is flawless. When you add on to this the fact that ink is shipped to you automatically based on ink levels, and only costs $1/mo. - I can't imagine an easier, more seamless experience. Never thought I'd be someone who is gushing to people about my printer, but it's so perfect for my uses as a business owner. Wouldn't recommend it for high quality prints like photos, but for everyday use, it's so great. ... show more

  • HP Instant Ink makes this printer a winner! Maybe . . .
Size: One size
This was a replacement was a very old Lexmark 2300 series all-in-one. I plan to primarily use this for scanning, but, thanks to the HP Instant Ink program, especially the free level (15 pages per month for free), I might actually use this printer for occasional printing also. The printer was well packaged. Delivery was quick and prompt. The box contains the printer, a reference guide, a quick start guide, power cord, a black ink cartridge and a color cartridge. Had to remove some tape to open the printer, and remove some cardboard spacers from inside the printer. The guides are completely useless. The pictures don't make anything clear, and end up confusing you. Once the printer was unpacked and the power cord was connected, it was time to install the cartridges. This took several minutes because the picture explaining how to do this is completely useless and misleading. I had to look for some youtube videos, and surprisingly, there were none specific to this printer model. Ultimately, I did manage to make a good guess about how the cartridges should be aligned (hint: the writing on the cartridges should be visible after the cartridge is installed, and be correct side up). Even then it felt like forcing them into the slots, and until I printed out the alignment page, I did not know whether my installation was correct. I don't understand why printer cartridges have to be so difficult to install inside a printer. Once I started the setup of the printer, the troubles only kept coming. The printer's tiny screen asked me to go to 123.hp.com and download the android app for my phone and promised that the app would then guide me through the rest of the setup. But, at that time, my printer was not even connected to the internet, so obviously my phone could not find the printer. I then had to go into manual setup, and connect the printer to my home router. After that, things became a little clearer. I was able to finish setting up the printer pretty quickly after that. You have to put paper in the paper tray and allow the printer to print out an alignment page first. This is a series of bars of different colors on the paper. You then have to put this page on the flatbed scanner and allow the printer to scan this page. This aligns the printer heads correctly, rather than you having to look at the alignment page and interpret it correctly to make adjustments. You can also turn on Web Services on the printer (this allows you to "email" documents to the printer and it prints them out), and once that is done, another page prints out with a printer code and the printer's auto-generated "email address". The printer did not ask me about or allow me to set up an HP Instant Ink account during setup. I had to go by myself to the HP website and create an HP Connected account and then sign up for the Instant Ink program. You need the printer code printed above to complete this step. Once that is done, HP promised me they would send me "Instant Ink Compatible" printer cartridges to replace the ones I have now installed in my printer. When I check on the printer status, it says I already have such cartridges installed in my printer, so I am not sure why I am getting new cartridges. Again, this is a point of confusion that HP does nothing to clarify. The Instant Ink program itself is quite economical, whether you print rarely or run a business and print lots of documents. There are four levels to the program including the free level (subject to change without notice, of course), and the pages you pay for in the non-free levels roll over from month to month (upto the quota for a month. So, if your quota is 30 pages, you can save up that entire amount and have 60 pages for next month, but you can't roll over more than 30 pages from one month to another). The overage charges once you exceed your quota for the month are very reasonable, with the most expensive monthly plan requiring you to pay only 4 cents per page for pages above its monthly quota. The overage charge for the free plan is 10 cents per page, which is far less than what a commercial establishment like Fedex-Kinko's will charge. The print quality of the printer is decent. Alignment using the scanner after printing an alignment page is quite clever. But it is not a top of the line printer, so it would be wrong to expect top of the line print quality out of this printer. It can handle most kinds of media (envelopes, card stock, photo paper, etc., in addition to A4 paper, 8.5x11 inch paper, etc.). The maximum paper size it can print on is 8.5x14 inches. The paper tray can hold up to 100 sheets of normal paper (less if you use heavier paper, envelopes, cardstock, etc.). It can print borderless pages, which can be useful if you print photographs, especially on photo paper. The printer can also print on both sides of the paper (and you can control whether you want to flip the sheets with the binding on the left or the top). I am a lot more interested in the scanning capabilities of this all-in-one than in its printing capabilities. And here the verdict is again, mixed. You can scan from the flatbed of the printer (maximum size of 8.5x11 inches), or through the document feeder (maximum size of 8.5x14 inches). The scan dialog on the printer software, either on the computer or on the phone, does not have any kind of preview capability that allows you to set the scan area by scanning what is on the scanner bed. You can give it specific sizes of what to scan, or you can have the printer figure out where the edges of what you are scanning are. The latter can be tricky if your scan subject has white borders. You can scan directly from the printer by using the touchscreen, but I couldn't find any way for such a scan to go to anything other than my computer. There seems to be no way to send such a scan to my phone. The maximum scan quality is 1200x1200 dpi. I scanned a few different things, and the lack of a preview was quite bothersome to me since I was used to it. Also, the results are displayed in an extremely tiny window that I found no way to resize or zoom to look at scan quality before deciding whether to accept it or make adjustments. You can save the scan and then you can open it to check on the quality, but that is multiple additional steps. I am quite disappointed in the lack of a preview that allows me to adjust settings and rescan without having to waste time saving inferior scans just to check for quality. That being said, the items I scanned, the scan quality was quite good even with default settings, and should only improve if I choose a higher resolution scan. There are ways to adjust the contrast, brightness and color saturation of scans, rotate the scans, etc., before saving them. The printer is a lot bigger in footprint than 8.5x11 inches, so I am very disappointed that the scan area is limited to 8.5x11 inches. There is glass over 8.5x11 inches, and the rest of the scanner bed area is black plastic. Moreover, I don't see any way to remove or raise the scanner cover so that it is easier to scan thicker materials like bound books. So, it is designed primarly to scan flat, thin things, nothing else. The printer cannot automatically scan both sides of a sheet, so you have to do it manually if you want to. Also, no way to scan film negatives or slides. You can scan only documents and photographs. On the plus side, the scans can be saved in the form of pictures (JPG) or PDF documents. You can have it save the results to the computer (or on your phone if you use the app on your phone to scan), or you can have the scan emailed to an email address. Also, you can add multiple pages to the same PDF to create a multi-page document before you save it. This is useful for scanning multi-page documents and having the results readily available as a single file instead of having to hunt for them among multiple files. Also, scans be full color, black and white, or grayscale. If you use the document feeder to scan, you can have the scanner scan both sides of the sheet automatically. I have not used the copier function of this printer. Since the copier is simply a reprint of a scan, it should be reasonably good given that the scan quality and print quality are reasonably good. You can also copy from the touchscreen of the printer. Bottomline: it is a good low-end all-in-one with decent performance in printing and scanning. Setup can be confusing and tricky, but once you get past that, the ability to interact with this printer from your computer and/or your phone without having to connect the printer to anything using an USB cord is very useful. Instant Ink is a big plus for HP, especially because of the free level in the program. Whether it works as advertised (counts printed pages correctly, sends me the correct replacement ink at the correct times, etc.) is an open question that will be answered in the next few months. I will post an update to this review if there are surprises and gotchas that I discover over that time period. Update on 8/29/2018: The print quality is quite good, and I was getting quite happy about the printer. So, in true HP fashion, the printer decided to show me just how bad it can be. God forbid a print job should fail for any reason. The printer gets stuck in a state from which you can't recover without drastic measures. The HP driver software could not cancel the stuck job, there is no way to cancel a print job from the printer's own screen. The HP website mentions some diagnostic software, but that did not even start up properly on my very powerful work computer with gobs of RAM and hard disk space running the latest updated operating system. Switching off the printer, even completely disconnecting it from the power and reconnecting it did not work. Ultimately, I had to turn the printer off, reboot my computer, and then the stuck job somehow came unfreed, and the printer started working again. I am reducing my rating to 3 stars based on this flakiness. If you can't design a printer that the owner can take control of when something wrong happens and cancel what it was doing so that you can continue working with it, that is a serious flaw in the printer. Update on 8/23/2019: After intermittent problems on and off, the printer has finally decided that it will not communicate with any other device wirelessly. I have reset my router, reset the printer multiple times, turned web services on the printer on and off multiple times, and nothing helps. It is connected to my router with a valid IP address, and the blue light that indicates wireless connectivity is lit and steady, but no other device (neither my laptops, nor my cell phone) can see the printer on the network. Which also means they can't print or scan wirelessly from the printer. Multiple chats with HP tech support were completely useless at resolving the issue. I am still holding on to the printer and it still prints when connected to my computer by USB cable. But I think this printer is a piece of junk overall, and I would not recommend it under any circumstances. I have reduced my rating to 1 star based on this assessment. I wish I could give it zero stars. Update on 09/28/2019: Spent a frustrating few hours trying to print some photos on photo paper. The photos came out with streaks and bad colors, and no settings changes improved the print quality. Chatted with customer service, and they fedexed me a new color cartridge to replace the one in my printer (that was not much used at this point - most of my previous prints have been in black and white). With the new cartridge, the photos printed out fine. By the way, as mentioned in my last update, all my printing nowadays is done with the printer connected to my computer using a USB cable. Two takeaways: HP customer service is pretty good (or maybe I lucked out). If you call them with simple problems like this, they are very generous with sending out replacement supplies, crediting you for the pages you printed out of your instant ink quota, etc. If you call with technical issues (like the printer not showing up on your network), good luck! Secondly, it is best to put the cartridges through their paces every now and then by cleaning and aligning the print heads on a regular basis. I print only occasionally (I am signed up for the free 15 pages a month level on Instant Ink and most months, I don't even print 15 pages), and this causes the cartridges and ink to become lower quality over time, leading to poor quality prints. A good cleaning and aligning of the print heads every week should keep things in better working order. And don't worry, pages you print for cleaning and aligning the print heads don't come out of your Instant Ink quota (but you do have to be willing to use a couple of sheets of paper to do this every time). ... show more
