Description

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Wildly entertaining."-The New York Times "Ingenious."-The Washington Post New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past—and your family—can haunt you like nothing else. When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world. Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market. But some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them… Like his novels The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support Group, How to Sell a Haunted House is classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying—a gripping new read from “the horror master” (USA Today). • A fun and creepy read.
I have never been a huge fan of horror novels, having only read maybe 3 in life. That was until this book was continuously recommended to me via Amazon. I caved and bought the book. For the first time in a long time I was impressed with the recommendation. This book, despite the fun title, starts off as a sad tale of loss and strained relationships with family. Then slowly you get some great humor and the actual horror angle of story. In the start of the book I could see some of the elements that we would circle back to and strong feeling of where we would be in the end. While some of that turned out to be true, I didn't see the character of Mark becoming the heart of book. Louise is great lead and frames the story in the best way. I felt on the same page as her almost all of the way. As for the horror, I would say that it hit my personal sweet spot. Never a point where I was rolling my eyes at the villain's or Louise and Mark's choices. Or never a point where it was gross or gory for the sake or it. Everything felt "earned", no out of left field decision midway to change the whole book or deus ex machina ending. As mentioned earlier this book has a great heart at it's center, and the humor hits in all the right times. If you are on the fence of whether or not to give this this a read, just read it. Grady Hendrix has made a phenomenal story. This was my first of his books and I'm excited to read his others. A great tale of grief, family, horror, and puppets. ... show more

  • Puppets and Dolls!
I enjoyed Grady Hendrix’s “How To Sell A Haunted House”. The story revolves around the broken relationship between a brother and sister after the tragic death of their parents. Working together to settle the estate can be a problem if the house is haunted! It is quirky and fun in some parts but really scary and horrible in other parts. If you don’t like horror I wouldn’t recommend…but if you do like it then this is a good Halloween read. ... show more

  • Exactly as advertised
REVIEW: How to Sell a Haunted House by Grady Hendrix If you've enjoyed Grady Hendrix's previous books, you're probably going to like this one. It is Grady in typical form - witty, entertaining, slightly spooky, grounded characters who contrast over-the-top characters, and drenched in South Carolina charm. Now, if you're not the biggest Grady fan, I doubt this will be the book that converts you for the same reasons mentioned above. I tend to fall in the middle. I enjoy his storytelling abilities and scenarios enough to keep reading his books, but there's nothing horrific about them, nor any lingering effects. To me, they are entry-level horror, and that's perfectly fine. There's a huge market for that as his success reflects. This book doesn't try to be anything other than what it is, and I respect that. The story begins with Louise getting the news that her parents were killed in a car crash. She travels from California back to her hometown of Charleston, South Carolina where she reluctantly reunites with her cousins, aunt, and her brother, Mark. Louise and Mark resent one another, so they butt heads at every decision that needs to be made in light of the tragedy. Louise sees herself as the reasonable one and looks down on her brother as an embarrassment and a failure. While trying to come to terms with selling the house, the siblings soon realize that there's another presence in there with them, and it has something to do with their mom's homemade puppet collection. Overall, this book was enjoyable. There was nothing groundbreaking about it, and I got exactly what I paid for. Check it out if you're into spooky stories about complicated families and southern settings. ... show more

  • Enjoyed a lot
I realized reading this book you can be annoyed with the characters at times and still like the book. I knew going in what it was about and still did not guess the plot twists. On some level, book with paranormal elements are going to be hard to relate to in terms of “reality” but nothing about this book felt too farfetched despite the subject matter. It was a fun book - I think it built up good tension and resolved it in interesting ways. The bonus materials were a great touch. I’m sad I finished it so fast, but it kept me really engaged, so that’s a good thing? At the end of the day, it was satisfying to see the sibling relationship develop and for the characters to come to grips with weird family stuff, and all of that felt very relatable, and the dolls were enjoyably disturbing. Easy 5 out of 5 for me. First from this author, excited to read his other stuff. ... show more

  • Original, Inventive & Hard To Put Down
Loved the dysfunctional family and the way it all comes together. The squirrels are the stuff of nightmares! I've never been a doll person. Now, I know why.

  • Grady Hendrix does not miss
This is my third Hendrix book, and there will be more on my shelf. Style is always excellent. You can tell he picked over the whole book with a comb. Pace is perfect, vivid action sequences, never drags. Story is delightfully bizarre. Like always, Hendrix made me say "wtf" in all the best ways. The characters reach right to you. The balance between emotion and horror is without peer. Worth a read, and a re-read. ... show more

  • Somewhat let down after reading great reviews
The first half of the book is really great, but falls flat in the second half.
