  • A Unique Voice
Format: Hardcover
Robb White, bless him, is dead now. And that's a shame, because he writes about things that most of us would barely imagine. Growing up as a wandering kid in the marshes, he certainly picked up some tales. And growing up around boats, he grew up to stay around boats. Frankly, to read about what he and his friends were like as children, you could almost imagine some stories would be little changed if they had all been born raccoons. It's all arranged episodically, so each chapter will stand more or less on its own. There's tales from his childhood, tales from adulthood, and most are clean enough you can read them to your kids. They aren't stories for kids, but dang it's great stuff. If you enjoyed "Lake Wobegone Days," this is right up your alley. ... show more

  • Quality, rightness and virtue: the wildman's revenge!
Format: Hardcover
Robb White writes of his wild childhood and wild boating life. And he gets away with it because he's so good! This is candid, uproarious writing of the best sort. It's specific. And you know he knows what he's talking about because he's been there. What a tonic! His work reminds me of Jack Saunders. : ) --A fellow folk writer who hasn't gotten his break yet. Robb's is rough'n'tumble family storytelling, yet it's gentle. It's personal...and it's general. Just the right stuff. More! ...OK, I have to let the cat out of the bag: if you want more, subscribe to the thrifty, friendly little magazine "Messing About In Boats" right now. Robb has been writing biweekly columns for it for years now. What great good times! And fiesty, helpful boating (and living) info, too. (Did you know that Robb is the world's best bass fisherman? He'll tell you why sometime...) ... show more

  • A good laugh all the way through.
Format: Hardcover
Over many years I have probably read How to Build a Tin Canoe three times. I've given copies to several people who like boats; they've all enjoyed the book. You'll wish you had a life like Robb White once you read the book.

  • How to Build a Tine Canoe
Format: Hardcover
I purchased the book for my husband who has enjoyed Robb White's writings about boats. He loved his writing style and read through the book in hours. In his eyes, a worthwhile read.

  • How to Build a Tin Canoe: Confessions of an Old Salt
Format: Hardcover
I believe every story here in "Tin Canoe" appears again in "Flotsam and Jetsam". I didn't care, my quest was to track down Mr. White's boat building methods. I really wanted to find out where to get plans for his sport boat ($75.00), instead, Mr. White took me all over Southern Georgia, Northern Florida, west to New Orleans, east to Puerto Rico and the Bahamas. It took from the end of the civil war to present day to get back here and I still don't have the plans. I'm left trying to figure out why you would sheath tulip poplar with fiberglass and epoxy before assembly? But, instead of heating the shop to 120 degrees to facilitate epoxy outgassing, now I will use heat lamps. Cost of book recovered. I don't know how much else I can take away from this book and put to practical use, the telling here is what's important, but for those that want to go messing around in boats, you might want to bone up on boat ramp launch/recovery techniques and etiquette, what constitutes an adequate mooring rig and how to determine if the other boats close to you are anchored properly. Oh, get a good set of binoculars to take out there so you don't miss anything on the Yahoo channel. And please, don't litter. ... show more

While reading his yarns are wonderful, the audiobook of this same title is even better. Fantastic, wry humor with life lessons intertwined. The Sea Turtle story always makes me laugh.

  • It's Not About Canoes
Format: Hardcover
Robb White's biographical tales, essays, or ruminations and commentary are loosely organized around his life spent messing about in small boats. You'd think this would lead to a narrow view of life's twists and turns but he uses a series of occurrences (almost not quite events) in his experience to draw some philosophical conclusions that are straightforward and thoughtful but delivered in such a subtle manner that they kind of sneak up on you. I was sorry when I finished Tin Canoe so I had to go out and find everything else he wrote. After all, how often do you find yourself laughing at what he's written and thinking "You got that right." ... show more

  • Great Nostalgic Read
Format: Hardcover
As a kid I loved Robb White Sr.'s books. Robb Jr has a different style. This is a very nostalgic history of childhood in NW Florida. There are a lot of great stories here about his exploits as an adult too. This man dies way to young. RIP
