Most frames have a back that pulls or folds out. for this frame, you just slide the photo/picture behind the backing, between the backing and the glass. If you try to fold the cardboard backing open, it rips.

These are very to use, and beautiful for photos.

This was a very good value - I got these on sale - and they look very nice. I also like how your photo just slides into the back and can be easily removed. There are no clasps to fuss with, which makes things very easy. My only concern is that the photo slides into an area between the frame and a piece of cardboard (the mat, or backing board) where the cardboard looks cheap and may not be chemically stable. Thankfully only the back of the photo is exposed to the cardboard but my concern is that if the cardboard leaches any chemicals or acids over time, it may damage the photo. I have looked at information on this and photo archivists recommend using a piece of MicroChamber interleaving paper between the mat / board and the photo to prevent any chemical damage. I will look into that next. In the meantime, I will continue to check the photo to make sure it is okay and will report back if anything changes. For now, this gets 4 stars. I wish they had used different material for the area where the photo gets inserted, or at least tell us how safe it should be for photo storage. Or provide the MicroChamber interleaving paper (although at this price, that's is asking too much, I know). Otherwise this is a sturdy, great looking frame, and it is being put to good use.
