Better than the last!

This was a great game the first time and I love this one even more. You play as Aloy continuing to try to save a post apocalyptic earth from aggressive animal designed machines and a various assortment of bad guys. The graphics are fantastic and beautiful. the coastal areas are amazing and swimming in the ocean has been fun. The game has mostly the same control functions and a few tweaks that are handy. One is nice change is that your mount follows you and allows you to be able to travel or climb out of an area but still be able to call your mount to you. I did find that the chances of your mount being killed by machines or raiders is higher even if you leave it a fair distance away. They also seem less populated. You can travel pretty far without coming across a mount site. Love the Fire Bristleback mount. The side missions are frequent and fun but I was rolling my eyes that one of the side missions includes a lecture on a hot button social issue. ( Must it permeate everything? Can we not just play a game?) But I haven't found anything else and it's relatively minor. I have only found one or two new weapons that are actually worth using. The rest are the usual assortment of bows, slings and casters. The availability of certain kinds of resources for ammo (machine muscle) is frustrating but par for the course. I have found that the ability of weapons to shoot multiple kinds of ammo is more limited and find myself changing weapons more often to use different ammo. There are other things that seem really pointless. There is a chess-like game you can play in settlements and collect or buy pieces for that you need to learn to play for dubious rewards. I found it slow and boring but I don't enjoy chess either so....Also new is the need to find a workbench to upgrade weapons, pouches and outfits instead of being able to do it on the fly. Boo. However extra resources that you are already too full to carry can be collected and sent to your "Stash" that is also found in settlements and random camps. You can then visit any Stash and have access to and fill up on your common extra resources. Yay. There are many different skills you can learn that are passive or active. I find the active skills to be more fiddly with the controls than I like and I don't activate them as much. I may have to learn some though as I have come across the first cauldron than I am unable to beat. I either haven't mastered using the proper skill (think power surge) or just haven't figured out the best tactics. Love the new machines throughout and some changes to old ones. The Baboon like Clamberjaw had a high creep factor for me. Just like with the first Horizon Zero Dawn, Forbidden West is has high value. With the beautiful game play and graphics along with the degree of complexity it gives you lots of bang for your buck. I hope they are working on add on packs and a third game is in development.

One of the best RPG's I've ever played

First off, I have to say that Guerilla Games has a masterpiece on their hands. Not just with this game but the entire series. The main quest story line and the side quests were all good. I enjoyed completing the scavenger quests and arena combat quests in order to unlock legendary weapons and gear. I loved just marveling at the graphics and the beautiful cities and landscapes that came along with it. The different tribes in the game were also very interesting. I ended up keeping several outfits and weapons in the game just because I thought they were cool. I like the fact that I was able to fight bigger, badder and tougher machines than the first game. I was particularly fond of the new blast sling weapons, other than that I just used different types of Bows and arrows to bring machine's down. The only bad part about this game is you will put in hours upon hours of gameplay just upgrading your legendary weapons and gear. You will mostly have to kill tons of machines over and over just to upgrade everything. I ended up completing the game without upgrading all my gear completely because I was so sick of rinse, recycle and repeat when it came to killing machines to get the parts I needed to upgrade my legendary weapons and gear. This is one of the best RPG's I've ever played. The Horizon series is a must play for any gamer. I would play as many Horizon games as Guerilla games puts out because they're that good.

Everything you want from a sequel

I bought a PlayStation 4 last year when I decided to get back into gaming. Horizon Zero Dawn was the second game I played on the console and I LOVED it. Definitely had some flaws and annoying aspects, but I really enjoyed playing it. It came with Frozen Wilds DLC and I loved that too. Needless to say, I was very excited for this sequel Horizon Forbidden West. Overall opinion, you NEED to buy this game. The world is so unique, creative, and immersive. Characters are well done and interesting. Machine fighting is fun! Just everything about this works. They really built upon the bones of the first game to deliver a truly great sequel. Pros: First of all, the game is absolutely gorgeous!! Every aspect, from the land to the sky, to the sea, looks breathtaking. Incredible attention to detail. Voice acting is A+. There's a couple new actors who really UNDERSTOOD the assignment. I personally loved the character growth and development of Aloy. No spoilers, I just think the themes of the game are presented really well There's so much to do! Mission, side quest, errands, bandit camps, exploration, strike, melee pits, arena combat: if you get bored with one thing, try something else New equipment and skills galore! So many new weapons and skills available. Can be a little overwhelming but it gives you choices and variety of gameplay options Valor surges are a great addition to gameplay Awesome new machines to fight FANTASTIC soundtrack. I really enjoyed the music in the first game, but this one is really incredible. I listen to it a lot outside of the game Cons: I played the Zero Dawn fairly recently and there were some people/places that I forgot about. If it's been a while since you played, you may want to replay/recap the first game. Story picks up shortly after the first, so you may be a little lost if you can't remember it Climbing is certainly better in this game but can be annoying compared to other franchises. Minor glitches (Didn't really bother me, but others may find it frustrating) To upgrade gear/outfits, you need a LOT of resources so be prepared. Farming everything you need can be very time consuming

Sequel that mostly improves on the original

The common criticism of Forbidden West (and not an entirely unfair one) is that it's "yet another open-world game": over-stuffed with side-quests, collectible whatzits, and map-unveiling towers. While FW may not break any new ground for the genre, its varied gameplay loop and the quality of its writing still make it a much more compelling experience than Assassin's Farcry and their kin. The biggest improvement over the original game in my opinion is the game effectively forcing the player to diversify their arsenal from the start. While there were certainly areas where it made things more difficult, it's ultimately pretty easy to get through the bulk of Zero Dawn using nothing but well-targeted regular, elemental, and sharpshot arrows. In the sequel, given the frequency with which you encounter massive enemies of ungodly power, this borders on suicidal. At a minimum you'll want to gain as much proficiency as possible with blastslings, but almost all of your weapons will find their niche sooner or later. Having the ability to instantly send excess materials back to a stash, instead of being stuck in a loop of maxing out your inventory, running low, and gathering, is also a game-changer. While it doesn't quite match the original (which has one of the all-time great backstory reveals), the storyline here still has the fully fleshed-out characterization and well-conveyed stakes of its predecessor. I especially love that the devs snuck a pretty solid art appreciation sequence into a franchise widely known as the "destroying robot dinosaurs games." (If you're worried, yes, it is optional.) If there's one sense in which I agree with the criticism I alluded to at the outset of this review, it's that the game is perhaps too stuffed with mini-games and story-free side activities for its own good. Try as I might, I couldn't get myself to care about Gauntlet Runs, the Machine Strike board game, the melee arenas, the Tenakth battle arena, or most of the cauldrons. But I'm sure there will be plenty who disagree, and all of these are entirely skippable without really disadvantaging the player, so it's hard to be too irritated by them unless you're hunting the platinum trophy. One other minor complaint: the Vantage Point side activity, whose unlocked story in Zero Dawn was one of the more moving parts of the game ("the only planet any of us ever got to know" still haunts me), in FW has all the charm and interest of a tourism commercial, and the process of unlocking them is unduly irritating to boot. I'd recommend skipping it as well and just looking up the text and images online. Overall, if you enjoyed HZD at all, (or didn't enjoy it for quality-of-life reasons like not having a stash,) I highly recommend the sequel. It definitely has me excited for where the franchise goes in the future.

A lovely story

After 64 hours, I’ve completed the story. The bad. I’ve seen some bugs and glitches like the dialogue cutting out here and there, textures not fully loading fast enough. At one point, the holos after an update where broken in the Gaia room, we’re only to see anything that wasn’t a wall behind it. Some effects, mostly where an enemy light source is located, it flashes a black box often. There are plants that seem to be forgotten to be removed as they are impossible to get without a noclip ability. The good. The story is great and is setup to have a third with all that is happening. The story is quite good, I got quite into it. My heartrate spiked at the final boss fight cuz I managed to kill it first try at lvl. There is plenty to do to upgrade your stuff. Overall, lovely game, despite the bugs and stuff, can’t wait for the third. For those trying to figure out how to unlock the Tallneck in the middle of the map, wait, it WILL unlock near the end but not spoiling exactly when. The game SHOULD get better as they push out more updates. The San Francisco area I liked, the post apocalyptic style I loved, reminded me a bit of Fallout: New Vegas, as well as the Las Vegas area. I also had fun taking screenshots of areas as it also feels that this game can give amazing wallpaper potential.

good, not great

First of all I'll say that I'm playing on a ps4. Not a ps4 pro, just a regular ps4 and it looks beautiful and plays well. There are no problems with the hardware, except I suppose crafting menus come up a little slower than on later hardware. No big deal. The problem I have with this game is that they magnified all the problems I had with Horizon zero dawn, which I loved in spite of them. First of all the machines don't obey the laws of physics. There is no implementation of "momentum" or "inertia" with these huge machines so your common experience with the world is of no use to you when trying to fight. Huge machines can move, change direction, and stop ridiculously fast. It's not that the fights are too difficult, they're just difficult in the wrong way. They also seem to have infinite ammo no matter how small they are, and can shoot through trees and walls. Forbidden West is still pretty buggy. I think this is really poor design, and makes for unsatisfying combat. The 'new' climbing system is awful. Just trying to climb over an edge can send her leaping off is some odd direction. Very strange. The main characters voice acting is good, however in some cases the direction is bad. Most of the other characters are cringeworthy. Some of the exchanges are lovely, some are awful. This game is heavily scripted and at times seems like a visual novel instead of letting you play. There are a few scripted set-piece battles that you are thrown into which you cannot play your own way. These are not fun. There are a few more damage types added and specific weapons for each one. You'll need all of them. I find this a bit tedious and unnecessary. the combat paradigm is: Scan, scroll through the parts, tag whatever parts you need, choose your damage types, equip appropriate weapons, and ammo types, and go. This seems ok on paper, maybe, but is annoying and tedious when you are fighting thousands of machines and each have their own idiosyncrasies. The story is not as strong as HZD, which reduces this game to a resource gathering, and 'ridiculously fast machine' combat game. I just hope that at the end of it I can shove my spear up Sylen's.... [cough cough] If you loved HZD you will probably like this game.

A great sequel to one of the Greatest Games of All Time

Horizon Forbidden West is a great follow-up to the masterfully made Zero Dawn. The world is larger and more varied this time around and it is easy to get lost in for up to 100 hours. While the story here (Alloy must learn to trust others) has been a turn-off for some people, I think it was handled well and puts us in a good place to continue into the third game. I found the combat to be challenging, and the graphics are spectacular. Perhaps some of the best for the PS4! Certainly worth a play for anyone who likes open-world adventures.

Amazing looking on last gen consoles

Strangely my review from Feb 21st 2022 has mysteriously vanished. It had quite a few “helpful” tags from various other users. I won’t retype the entire review again but just know that if you have a PS4 Pro (which I have) you should not have too many issues playing the game. Occasionally I would get artifacting on screen that would quickly resolve itself. If you played Dying Light 2 this game will seem like the developers actually knew how to code a game and took pride in that. If you haven't played Horizon Zero Dawn and the DLC Frozen Wilds in a while I suggest you watch a video and brush up on the lore as this game take place right after Frozen Wilds. You will definitely have fun playing this game as I did. Kudos to Guerrilla Games for bringing us another amazing game to enjoy.
