I don't think this film gets enough credit; perhaps there's a gap in expectation. Granted there are places where it can be melodramatic. The dialogue in certain scenes are a bit lengthy but in a way that doesn't lack for weight. The characters are less complex than they are extremely vivid, which I suspect will change as new chapters are added and the canvas is rolled out more completely. While the film does run long, you're only just being introduced and that's made clear throughout and at the end of the film. The circumstances are unflinchingly brutal and the setting cold and endless. You and the characters are left in the great wide open, completely isolated and cocooned in despair. Horizon is a hearty mix of the westward expansion dream trope intertwined with the stark reality of peril and an often failing struggle for survival. What may result from the multiple chapters of Horizon is a completely new way of telling a story. You just couldn't do this justice in a 2 hour run time. I'd guess that the production team's goal was to immerse the viewer to a new depth of experience. For my part, I'll be patient and hope that Costner's vision for this story is as grand as it's priming up to be. Either way I'm very much looking forward to seeing it played out, and hope and pray it doesn't become some kind of sanctimonious lecture from a continuously preachy Hollywood. From what I've seen so far, I think not. If Dances With Wolves gave us one or two evocative dimensions about the 19th century West, Horizon promises to go much further, and to do so with as much purpose. It's curious to see how Costner and the production team have been at odds with the industry. I could care less if the film makes a dime, the art so far has been self-redeeming. ... show more

    • The Biggest Western Film in Years is Worth Your Three Hours Despite What "Critics" May Claim
The Western is decades past its peak, but occasionally we are gifted with a big budget Hollywood film that keeps the genre alive. Horizon is arguably the most high profile Western event in decades, and there is a lot riding on it, not only the future of the saga, for which this is only part one of an intended four, but as a litmus test for the modern audience's receptiveness to the Hollywood Western. To some, any film that celebrates the majesty and romanticism of the West is a non-starter, even as the more revisionist Western has largely been done to death over the past 50 years. As Horizon is more in keeping with the classic Western ideals (it even dares to show Native Americans fighting among themselves at one point and often playing the role of antagonist), it is no surprise that the modern critical reception has been cool to say the least. For myself and many of the other Western fans with which I have discussed the film, though, it was a fine picture that made good use of its three hour running time. A lot has been made of its length, but it didn't feel overlong despite necessitating some commitment on part of the viewer. It looks beautiful, too, and is well acted. The film has to do a lot as the introduction of a four-part saga, and most of its admitted flaws are a result of it having to set up so many characters and plot lines. It takes around 90 minutes to bring all of its main characters and vignettes on screen. As a result, it can feel like three or four movies loosely stitched together, but I have faith that connections will be made in the future films should they actually get made. It will also improve on a rewatch once the viewer has more context for the earlier section. I praise Costner and the other filmmakers for trusting the audience to follow along without clumsily over-explaining everything. One has to pay attention and put the pieces together himself, which is a rare and welcome requirement these days from a Hollywood picture. I highly encourage anyone with an interest in Westerns to watch this film. We don't get many films like this these days and will get even fewer if this film isn't successful. ... show more

    • Price came down so was not a waste of money.
Was ok but he was trying to hard to compete with Yellowstone. He is a great actor though.

Very good western thriller with a star studded cast. Does an excellent job telling multiple storylines that come together. Feel the makers did their research to make it as realistic as possible!

Great movie, I can't wait to see the rest of the series. I am also somewhat entangled since my father worked on locations for the film and I grew up in Utah where much of it was filmed
