I purchased this for a school event where we needed to serve a large amount of coffee for a crowd. Completely full, I used 7 heaping cups to get the coffee going. It does take over an hour to get this fully set up, so prepare to wake up early--also, I did find out the hard way that the urn is not splash proof, I tried to transport this from home to school and got coffee splashed all over me. So: bring to where you want it, maybe setup a timer plug 90 minutes so you don't have to be there, and hopefully it will be ready when you need it.

Disclaimer: All opinions are my own and I pride myself on unbiased reviews that can help others decide whether something is worth it. You need to measure your are to make sure you can even fit this. This thing is no joke large. It measures about 23” tall and 15” wide. It’s round. It’s about 13” in diameter. Nice little pull lever to dispense the drink when ready. If you are always making a ton of coffee or teas this is really nice to have around. Keep it plugged in and you can have nice warm coffee or tea for a while, this thing will keep it warm. Easy and simple to use, just throw in all the coffee beans or in my case I use barley beans to make barley tea! It has a filter that will hold all that for you. There’s a little clear water gauge on the side so you can see how much is left. Perfect for large gatherings or if you really want nonstop warm coffees or teas on the ready (especially during winter). Make sure to do a full boil of just water the first time around and pour it out to clean it all out! You should make it a habit to always do a full boil with water and pour it out with any new kettle/coffee maker type things (yes even Kuerigs) because it’s just good practice to make sure the new device is clean and keep you and your family safe.

First, a history lesson. For all those who have grown up with a Starbucks Grande being their preferred "cup of coffee," the official measure of a brewed cup of coffee is 5 ounces. When the big blue can o' coffee says to use a rounded tablespoon or two per cup, that makes 5 ounces. This may explain why coffee is so watered down these days, but I digress..... But that Grande cup is actually 3 cups of coffee, and this urn, using that measurement makes 600 ounces of hot water, which is fifty 12-ounce cups, or 37.5 16-ounce cups. Plan accordingly. Back to the coffee maker. It's a 1500-watt unit, so it can get a full urn of water hot, but it will take a while. It brews about 75 (5oz) cups of coffee perfectly without water sitting in the urn basket. To brew that number of cups of really tasty coffee, you'll need about 40-45 ounces of coffee (0.6oz per cup) in the urn basket. Fill the urn with water, add the post and the urn basket, close the lid, and start the batch. Brew time is completed when the yellow light comes on and the urn goes into "keep warm" mode. It should be noted that while some say you can make much smaller batches, it isn't quite as tasty, simply because the urn basket has a much smaller amount of coffee in it. If you need 10 cups, consider using a coffeemaker or Keurig. If you need 100 cups of cocoa in a hurry, pre-heating the water outside of the urn speeds up the process greatly. Otherwise, it will take up to 60 minutes to heat the water from the hot faucet temperature (100F) to 180F degrees, and this is completely normal. It takes time to heat that much mass with 1500 watts. Just budget this much time into your plans. If you are making a hot beverage for a huge group, you will need a ready supply of pre-heated water to avoid running out of the hot beverage. Under huge volume, it makes a perfect dispenser; No coffee urn can really serve 120 cups per hour due to the brew times. Nothing in my review should be interpreted as a negative. I wanted to post all the details about how to live with a percolating coffee urn, as all too many people have never used one and I wanted to set realistic expectations as to quantity and time so that you are completely satisfied with this product.
