  • SO GLAD I got the Holy Stone 120D!
I've never flown a drone...much less owned one! But aerial video and photos would really help in a project I have to take care of. So I researched everything I could find...on Amazon and other sites. I determined three things were especially important to me: 1) good 1080 pixel video; 2) features that would reduce the chances of me from crashing the thing (like one button take off and landing); 3) features that would make it harder for a totally inexperienced pilot like me to let the drone just fly away into the distance, leaving me forlorn. I don't want an expensive (or even inexpensive) toy...I want something I can count on. So I did more research. Narrowed my choices down to about 8 possibilities, then further to three which seemed to have all the features I needed and got decent reviews. I sprung for the Holy Stone 120D. I've been test flying and learning it for the past few days, a bit at a time. First thing I did was make sure those 'safety' features worked well -- like one button take off and landing and return to home. Seemed to work fine. Then the camera...pretty good, clear video. Looking really closely I can see some minor distortions...but pretty good for a rather inexpensive camera. Definitely good enough for my purposes. A little at a time I flew it higher...farther away. It's been responsive, reliable, easy to learn and easy to handle. Really, the most challenging part has been remembering how to do the pairing and various calibrations without referring to the very clear manual. I couldn't have been more happy. Then, a couple of hours ago I took it for another test/learning flight. It was more breezy than it had been previously, so I decided to stay low and close. While it was flying the breeze suddenly picked up...it started to become rather windy. I began to bring the drone home...it was fighting the wind, I could tell...and the wind was starting to win! I pushed the return to home button and it began it's beeping sequence, indicating 'return to home' was engaged. The wind picked up more...the drone was being lifted higher and higher and blown farther and farther away by the wind. Nothing I was doing was helping and...my nightmare scenario...the drone became smaller and smaller and smaller in the distance. The beeping on the transmitter assured me the 'return home' was engaged...but obviously the wind was just too, too strong. The drone completely disappeared from sight. I was annoyed and angry with myself more than anything...stupid to have tried to fly such a light machine in the breeze and not pay more attention. I started packing up. I decided to wait longer, just in case. I let the 'return to home' beep continue. I waited five minutes...eight minutes...ten minutes. Then, over the sound of the breeze, I thought I might be hearing the buzzing of the drone's props. No...that wasn't it. Then again, but a bit louder. I looked up. Couldn't find anything...just my imagine. But several seconds later I could hear the sound again only louder. I looked up again and to my amazement, there is was! About 100 feet overhead and slowly descending. It landed perfectly, just a couple of feet from where it had taken off at the beginning of its wild ride. I am SO GLAD I got the Holy Stone 120D! The only thing which hasn't worked perfectly is that the Android app sometimes doesn't seem to connect to the drone. Usually it connects just fine...but sometimes the drone and the app don't seem to connect. I'm going to call support for suggestions. The WiFi connects easily and strongly, but for some reason the app doesn't always connect well. That's not very important to me because from the outset I've preferred to use the handheld transmitter controls. I think the only thing I might miss, if the app doesn't connect, is seeing on the phone screen what the camera sees. So far I haven't missed that at all if it fails to connect. Overall I couldn't be more pleased ... show more

  • Great little training drone.
Color: Grey
I purchased this to learn how to fly a drone. I am very pleased with how it handles and battery time (about 10 minutes average), which is not bad because it comes with 3 batteries. It gets pushed around a little bit in the wind due to its small size and weight. I found that using the higher speed setting tames the wind better. I do not use the headless mode because I want to develop better control skills. The little drone has great response to the controller. It is well made and durable. I have had a couple of minor crashes and so far it's unscathed. HolyStone has hit the mark with an inexpensive, well made, easy to fly drone to learn piloting skills on. It's also loads of fun. I think they got me hooked on drone flying! ... show more

  • Great for the price
This is my first drone so I have no other frame of reference other than what I've seen on youtube of other drones. Video Quality The video quality is okay but 1080p is really starting to show its age. You can’t expect super amazing quality for the price paid though. The 120 degree wide angle lens captures a lot but gives a bit of “fish eye” effect to the picture. The camera struggles to adjust when going from very bright sunlit areas to dark shady areas. But again, what do you really expect for the price? It’s good enough. Ease of use It’s pretty easy to use out of the box, the instructions are straightforward and you should be flying in no time. The drone controls are pretty intuitive and make sense as long as you can keep track of what direction the drone is pointing. This did become an issue a few times when I apparently flew the drone too far for the live video on my phone to keep streaming and I had to manually orient myself with the drone in the sky to bring it back to me. You can’t really fly the drone using the live feed video because there is enough of a delay where it makes navigating difficult and losing the video feed at anything past 90’ is a bit of a bummer. I still can’t figure out how to take video directly from the SD card. Video saves to the app just fine but I its only the live stream feed that saves to the phone, I cannot view the parts of the video where the live feed cut out unless I can get it off the SD card. When I insert the SD card into the computer is shows up like nothing is on the card. Maybe I’m doing something wrong but it would be nice if this function was more straightforward. Materials Quality Materials seem pretty darn good. The plastic seems sturdy and not prone to easily breaking. The controller also seems very sturdy. I have no complains about the quality of the materials. Battery Life Battery life is pretty good and you definitely get the advertised 18 minutes as long as you’re not zooming around like a racing drone. Using high speed and making quick movements can drain the battery in as little as 10 minutes if you aren’t careful. The drone is pretty fast and responsive though, which is nice. Overall Value is pretty darn good. This is a good starter drone for anyone who has never had the opportunity to fly one before. There are a lot more pros than cons here so I’m pretty happy with it. ... show more
