Description

LEARN TO FLY SUCCESSFULLY We are committed to engineering aircraft that you can learn to fly with successfully even if you’ve never flown RC before. Every HobbyZone aircraft we offer features industry-leading design and technology developed by experts to keep you in control and learning at your own pace so you can turn your dreams of flight into a reality! For nearly two decades, multiple versions of the Apprentice have been the go-to “traditional” trainer of choice for many first-time RC pilots. The HobbyZone Apprentice STOL S 700mm has been scaled down from the incredibly popular Apprentice 1.5m and 1.2m models, yet has also been optimized to offer STOL capabilities similar to the best-selling E-flite Timber series models. Plus, it’s “ultra-micro” sized to be more affordable and convenient for more people to fly in more places and smaller spaces – from yards and parks to sports fields and beyond! The Apprentice STOL S 700mm is equipped with Horizon Hobby's exclusive and innovative SAFE technology that makes it possible for almost anyone to learn to fly successfully. Beneath its durable exterior, there’s an efficient brushless motor along with a factory-installed ESC, receiver and servos. The RTF version also comes with everything else needed to fly in the box including a Spektrum battery, charger, and an SLT6 controller/transmitter equipped with a USB-C port for direct connection to a PC for easy plug-and-play use of the included trial version of the RealFlight Trainer Edition RC flight simulator! Overview Welcome to the exciting world of RC (Radio Controlled) flight! If you've ever dreamed of taking to the skies, Horizon Hobby has you covered. We are committed to engineering aircraft that you can learn to fly with successfully even if you've never flown RC before. Every HobbyZone aircraft we offer features industry-leading design and technology developed by experts to keep you in control and learning at your own pace so you can turn your dreams of flight into a reality! The HobbyZone Apprentice STOL S 700mm has been scaled down from some of the most popular trainer aircraft ever designed to make learning to fly radio-controlled (RC) airplanes easy and fun! Its ultra-micro size makes it the perfect choice for a smaller trainer model that can be flown in large yards, parks, soccer fields, football fields and other suitable spaces where larger models can’t typically be flown successfully by first-time pilots. Featuring a more “traditional” trainer design, it’s also been optimized to offer STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) capabilities like the iconic E-flite Timber series models. The brushless power system is compatible with common and affordable 2S 300mAh batteries, and also gives it the power to fly in wind that other ultra-micro and mini-class trainer models can’t typically handle (up to 5 mph). That power, combined with the taildragger landing gear and oversized tires, gives it the ability to take off almost immediately from paved, dirt, gravel, and even the grass surfaces found at many parks and sports fields. The advanced EPO construction is lightweight yet incredibly durable, and the removable wing makes transport, storage, and replacement as convenient as possible. Full 4-channel control plus SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology with Beginner, Intermediate and Experienced flight modes makes it easy to learn to fly successfully and to advance into performing aerobatics including loops, rolls, and even inverted (upside down) flight at the flip of a switch! The Ready-To-Fly (RTF) version includes everything needed to fly in one box and is a perfect choice if you're a new RC pilot. From the Spektrum SLT6 2.4GHz controller/transmitter you can use with other Bind-N-Fly (BNF) Basic aircraft compatible with SLT FHSS technology (future availability) after you learn to fly, to the 2S 300mAh rechargeable LiPo (Lithium Polymer) battery and a convenient USB-C charger that can be used with a variety of USB power sources, there's nothing extra you need to buy! A BNF Basic version is also available for experienced pilots who want to use their favorite Spektrum transmitter along with batteries and chargers they may already own. And for both versions, the powerful and efficient brushless motor, ESC, dual-protocol (DSMX/DSM2 and SLT FHSS) receiver, and servos are all factory-installed in the durable EPO airframe that’s nearly ready to fly right out of the box. Simply install the wing using the included thumbscrews and you can be flying in minutes – no glue or tools are required! Apprentice STOL S 700mm Dimensions In The Box Needed to Complete The RTF version also includes a Steam key to download and activate a trial version of the RealFlight Trainer Edition RC flight simulator. The simulator features many of the most popular Horizon Hobby trainer airplanes and helicopters, including the Apprentice STOL S 700mm, and built-in Virtual Flight Instructor lessons. (1) Apprentice STOL S 700mm Product Manual Included in each box. The HobbyZone Apprentice STOL S 700mm comes out of the box with the power system, servos and a Spektrum 2.4GHz receiver installed so all you need to do is bind the receiver to a compatible transmitter, finish any final assembly, and fly! If this is your first RC airplane, revolutionary and Horizon Hobby-exclusive SAFE (Sensor Assisted Flight Envelope) technology prevents over-control and crashes. It also offers multiple flight modes to deliver more control and capabilities as your skills progress at the flip of a switch. The Apprentice STOL S 700mm has been scaled down from the popular Apprentice 1.5m and 1.2m models, yet has also been designed to offer STOL capabilities similar to E-flite Timber series models. It’s “ultra-micro” sized to be more affordable and convenient for more people to fly in more places and smaller spaces – from yards and parks to sports fields and beyond! The factory-installed brushless outrunner motor is compatible with affordable and common 2S 300mAh rechargeable Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries. It’s more powerful and efficient than brushed motors, which gives the Apprentice STOL S the power to fly in winds that other ultra-micro and mini-class trainer models can’t typically handle (up to 5 mph). The oversized tires and steerable tailwheel make it possible to taxi, take off from and land on a variety of surfaces that are impossible for most models of this size to handle. From the grass surfaces found at many parks and sports fields, to gravel paths and paved surfaces. Arrives mostly factory-assembled with the power system, servos and receiver installed. All you need to do is slide the landing gear into the fuselage then install the wing using two convenient thumbscrews and you’ll be ready to fly within minutes of opening the box – no glue or tools required!

  • Does What It's Designed To Do—Very Well
I'd love to give this thing 5 stars, in fact, I guess I will, with a few caveats. It's a dream to fly, and it practically lands itself. It's easy to see, and it has no bad habits. The plastic insert that holds the main gear broke loose from the fuselage. I just put some packing tape over it so I wouldn't have to wait for my Gorilla Clear Grip to cure so I could get her back up in the air. 🤣 And I did have to replace the loop tape on the deck of the battery bay with something a little wider and some better adhesive (Gorilla Clear Grip). Although it could have been a fluke, the mechanical trim adjustments seem to be a once-and-done affair. If you try bending them too many times—two in my case—they snap right in two at at the inexplicably engineered, sharp cornered, stress rising V-bend . I learned this the hard way, while trying to fix it with a parts kit and, ultimately, returning it for a replacement plane. Word to the wise. I flew my first one away into the woods behind my neighbor's house, and immediately ordered a new one, barely missing a beat. Don't try using batteries from an old 500mm warbird in this; they don't have the proper juice level. I use Ovonic 800mah packs and get about 25 minutes of flight time. The 450mah ones are okay, too, but for only 9 grams more payload, and 2 or 3 bucks more for a two-pack that gives out twice the flight time, it's a no-brainer. It's over twice the weight of the Spektrum packs, but it still flies happily, forever. Speaking of adding weight to your plane, I also put two 6g LED light packs on either side of the fuselage just about ½inch aft of the CG line (centerline of the wing chord) facing outward so they illuminate the underside of the wings during dusk/dawn patrols. The huge dihedral wings give this bird so much lift that the motor basically just keeps it moving forward while it glides forever. You won't get the roll-rates of a Timber X or a flat foamy but, then, that's not the draw here. It's great at what it does. I've flown it right off my raised 5'X7' front porch in beginner mode (limited elevator authority), so the STOL designation is fairly accurate marketing, although short landings probably require a surface other than pavement or asphalt. It hand-launches great, too. I use a JST-RCY female to PH 3-pin male adapter so I can avoid the cost of Spektrum packs. I'm on a fixed income. One of the best features of this plane is the intermediate flight mode. It's basically AS3X or advanced mode with no auto-leveling but generous bank and pitch limits and some kind of electronic derring-do that keeps the plane from getting upside-down. It's far superior to the middle flight mode on the VolantexRC/Eachine products as a training tool—especially for things like throttle management and coordinated turns. It's basically a heavyweight, motorized glider that'll give you countless hours of relaxing enjoyment. I have a couple of big Arrows planes on order—a slightly impulse buy induced by ridiculously deep discounts—but this A700, as I call it, is a very handy, indispensable park flyer. ... show more

  • A great little trainer!
Bought this to "Train up" before I fly my beautiful Carbon Cub "Cleetus" edition. After flying the Apprentice for hours in the RealSim simulator I finally had the courage to launch it. Have to say, the Apprentice flies exactly like it does in the sim and it flies beautifully! I live on a golf course and when the course is closed I have all the open space I need. It's a very forgiving aircraft. If you are getting ready to dive into RC flying, the Apprentice won't steer you wrong. Great little plane! ... show more

  • Easy peasy flyer.
I set this up on a 3 way switch on auxiliary 1 on my DX6E transmitter. Didn't like it. Set up safe and as3x on switch b and it flew awesome. If you use batteries with the red jst connector you will need the jst umx adapter from progressive rc which is on Amazon.

  • Great 5 seconds after the takeoff
Hadn’t flown in a couple years and have a nice spot behind the house now. Beautiful morning so went out on the maiden flight. Took off with the plane and climbed a bit. Next thing I know the plane kept climbing and climbing and was a little dot in the distance. So for the couple seconds I flew it the plane was great. After that who knows. Just disappointed that I wasted the money on the plane and didn’t get to fly it ... show more
