I am reviewing this solely as a device for plunging brass threaded inserts into PLA. If you want a soldering iron for, y'know, soldering, skip this one. I've so far used this to plunge 28 inserts into a few printed motherboard trays, and I actually bought it specifically for the reviews that suggested that it can't keep a solder joint molten, as I was sick of overheating an insert and winding up with a puddle when I wanted to just push and be done holding the insert. With this, I can confirm from my non-soldering experience that this would not, absolutely not, be able to re-melt a large solder joint expediently, but its heat is plenty for quickly pushing an m3-threaded insert into a 3.94mm hole in an HTPLA part, where it cools almost immediately. Now for the one star I knocked off, which may be a sixth star for the right person taking cues from this review: The tip this ships with is stupidly fragile. I unscrewed the collar to test the "tip can be easily replaced" claim on the packaging, and pulled straight up. ...There's nothing securing the metal to the base of these tips. If you do that without shoving a fingernail or a tool under the base of the tip, you will probably wind up seeing a good length of nichrome wire uncoiling before your eyes and have basically no chance of getting the tip back together. Why would this be a positive for even the craziest DIY'er to read this? Calm down, I'm getting to that. After doing some research, I found that at least the tip is a very generic design, and that I can find packs of 5-10 of them for a few dollars on other stores. I'm kinda surprised I hadn't found any sources on Amazon, but I'll leave the sources to your imagination, dear reader, as I think Amazon might slap me for mentioning other mega-stores on their platform. ... show more

  • but sometimes when I need to make small repair or use it outside the home it's great. It has two design issues
It doesn't replace main-powered Weller, but sometimes when I need to make small repair or use it outside the home it's great. It has two design issues: - cord has USB one one side and audio jack on another. I wonder what would happen if somebody would connect it to phone or computer... It would be much better to just use some other connector - button that powers them is not a button. No idea how it works, maybe it measures capacitance (that changes when somebody touches it). Anyway, there was couple times when it wouldn't register touching that button. I needed to ground myself, or touch some bigger metal object for it to register again. ... show more

First off, The negative reviews that I see on this product, are made by people with some sort of mental illness. You can discern from what they post, that they have absolutely no understanding of electronics or how any of it works. The only thing they know, is that solder is supposed to melt. That's it. For the people saying that it doesn't get hot enough,... THAT'S BECAUSE YOU PLUGGED IT INTO A LOW POWER USB SOURCE ❢❢ These people clearly know nothing about making electronics, yet they speak like a forceful authority on the subject. • Bad cable
I use a power bank to power it (Sido power bank, not a brand name, a gift when I bought my phone), the output is 5v 2.4A, the soldering iron works well, you can see the smoke in the photo when it melt the tin. I think I got it too hot, the tip got oxidized (matte color), better prepare a wet sponge to clean the tip. USB 2.0 port will not work because it is limited to 500mA that is not enough power, must connect to USB 3.0 port. 2021Feb08 edit: It stopped work suddenly, I found out that it was the cable, at the usb type-A end, the cable inside loose. It took me a few hours to find a replacement usb plug, cut the cable, reconnect, it worked again. This kind of cheap, stupid mistake should not happen. Wasted my time. I took two stars off. BTW, this device draws about 1.0 Amp current from USB 3.0 port. ... show more

  • Nice little Iron, beats the 5v competition!
I bought this along with another 5v USB soldering iron (a white one with 3 temperature settings) and this iron is much better in every way. Where the other iron requires a beefy(>2A) USB wallplug that I only have 1 or 2 of, and can never find. This iron works with whatever USB I come across, that usually being the original 1A Apple plug. Using that, the iron does heat up very quick, not quite 15 seconds quick. But its not much longer. I would definitely purchase this again if I were to lose or damage my current one. If you're looking for that small job / travel soldering iron, I highly recommend this one. ... show more

  • Frankly, I'm amazed!
I was not expecting much, but I was hoping this could be used "in a pinch". It has already saved the day a few times.

  • Not good item, had to return.
Peice of junk. Doesn't heat up near the 480°C stated. Had it on for 15 minutes and barely melted fresh solder. Then when applying that solder it immediately rehardened aND wouldn't remelt.

  • This is perfect for my needs
I work in mainly off the beaten path type areas. Plug ins are rare, but the need for a quick soldering job less so. This is a quick and professional tool that I can plug into a sub charging pack and use within a few seconds and cools down just as fast. This is perfect for my needs.
