  • My daughter was interested in building a robot together. 10/10, would recommend.
Set name: TurboPi Standard Kit
Honest review: My daughter was interested in building a robot together. We made the TurboPi bot our first one and were pleasantly surprised by the build quality and features this little bot packs! It took roughly 3-hrs to build start to finish while watching the Youtube tutorial videos, but we got through it and had a blast. Highly recommend this little project if your kids have the patience to sit still for several hours (we had to take frequent breaks). Key takeaways from this project (If you or the kid you're buying this for can't handle the things below, you might need to help them on the project or find something slightly less complex - just being honest): 1. Must be patient. 2. Have to have some level of intellect to scan the QR codes, go to Google Drive and download the necessary files to run the software. (I helped my kid out on this, but she knew how to scan a QR code at the age of 7, so not much help needed there other than getting the system files loaded on the SD card). 3. It requires you email the company for the system files in order to run the software if you buy the Non-RaspberryPi version like we did. Not a big deal since there's instructions and it tells you exactly what to do to load the files to get the bot working. Again, just need to follow simple instructions and have half a brain to save a few bucks, otherwise, pay the extra price and get the RaspberryPi and everything included with your kit like a smart person. :-) 10/10, will be purchasing more! ... show more

  • Updated - Programming not found, presently a useless kit
Set name: TurboPi Standard Kit
The build quality is very high. The instructions are mostly complete but do not include some steps. After several days of searching I have been unable to find the system image, therefore this kit is unuseable and I must downgrade the rating. I hope to update the rating when I have the proper programming. 2nd UPDATE I had some medical complications, and was just recently able to resume work on this project. I am using a MacBookPro Early 2011, with a built in SD card reader. It is running MacOS 10.13.6. Disk Utility is version 17.0.3. The video shows the error message, while the two photos show the files in the expanded volume. I noted the two embedded NDIF disk images. At this point, I do not know what to do next, I wish I could buy a preprogrammed SD Card. 3rd UPDATE With more research, I found that the Raspberry 5 used for this project was not working. (It was purchased separately from another company) After it was replaced, I have been able to connect using a local network, and the camera, motors and Ultrasonic sensor light are working. I will try using a LAN connection after I complete the build. In my troubleshooting efforts, things got loose, my next step is to disassemble the robot and reassemble it using thread locker. It has been a long road and I thank I wonder for their help. Now I would rate the robot as five stars. ... show more

  • Misleading web description regarding "optional" Raspberry Pi5
Set name: TurboPi Standard Kit
Website description does not clearly state that the operating system must be either purchased or moved from another item to help make this Robot car work! The description states that Rasberry Pi 5 is "optional" which makes a non computer expert think that it will still run without this item. We ordered three different kits since we received some of the Raspberry Pi5 kit in each order and assumed the "kit" was not completely packaged correctly :( ... show more

  • Model without Pi also without batteries, battery charger, and SD card
Set name: TurboPi Standard Kit
Purchased November 2023. As there are little to no reviews of this on Amazon, I'm writing a little bit of what I know to help other shoppers. I bought the TurboPi robot kit without the Pi because it looked like if you wanted to Pi package, it took much longer to arrive (no surprise). So if you opt to purchase the Raspberry Pi separately, be aware that you will also need to separately purchase the 2x 3.7 volt rechargeable batteries, battery charger, and micro SD card. None of those items are included if you get the model without the Pi. It is easy to miss this in the product details. All of the instructions for this product are available on the manufacturer's Google Drive, which can be accessed via the hiwonder.com website. The hardware assembly instructions are clear so far. My 11 year old son is able to follow and assembly the hardware. There are a number of software apps that you must download and install in order to format the SD card and burn the image. I was uneasy installing apps from a manufacturer I did not know (and don't trust yet frankly) so I used alternate apps from sources I trusted to format and burn the image. The image and source code is supposedly available, however it was missing from the Google Drive documentation, with a note to "email support_at_hiwonder.com" I am still waiting for these files. I am expecting the software part of this product to be a little tricky but maybe it will surprise me. As I progress in building and using it, I will update this review. For now, I can say that it is best to have some experience in Raspberry Pi boards and some coding background. Unless you somewhat risk accepting, I would wait until there are more reviews on this product or find reviews someplace else other than here. EDIT I am editing this review after some more experience with the product and manufacturer. The manufacturer responded quickly to support requests and we got the image and source code without any problem (after proving purchase). Burning the image went smoothly and the Pi booted flawlessly, all systems nominal. We accessed the Pi desktop via RealVNC Viewer (as explained in the documentation). If you are not familiar, VNC viewer is free software that remotely accesses the Pi's desktop and displays it in a window on your screen. The Pi OS provided by the image is quite similar to a typical Pi OS' in my opinion, with the exception that much of the graphical user interface is not in English but likely Chinese. Some parts of the UI included the English language. Fortunately a lot of the icons are universal and the documentation does explain what everything means. There is much more to be explored in the OS and source code itself, but that is too advanced for my 11 year old. We installed the manufacturer's phone app "WonderPi" on an old android phone and followed the directions to connect the phone to the robot via wifi, which it broadcasts automatically on startup. Again, instructions all clear enough for this to happen without too much trouble. The app allows for more of a video game interface and the robot can be immediately played with, including movement, object and line tracking, and use of the camera. When looking at this product before purchase, the most appealing feature was the on-board camera that could be used during remote control, and it does do this as expected. However the range of remote control is essentially line of sight, which is a disappointment since you cannot, say, control the robot from another room and use the camera to see where you're going. I'm not sure if this is a limitation of the wifi signal strength, or a bug. And if its the signal strength, if that is limited due to FCC regulation, due to power limit of the batteries, or some other hardware or software reason. A little about the hardware. The robot frame, brackets, standoffs, and wheels are sturdy. The electrical components (servo motors, cameras) seem totally adequate. Fasteners are metric machine bolts and nuts, and some threaded screws, and the only issue was that none of the little bags of fasteners were labeled, so it was easy to get confused about which ones to use during the assembly steps. But my only real concern with hardware/assembly was that the camera is mounted to the vertical control servo on only one side, with no support to the other side. As a result, it droops, but this doesn't affect camera movement. My other child, not the one who assembled the robot, stepped on a wheel and broke one of the wheel motor axles. I superglued it back together (without gluing the axle to the motorbody, amazingly) and it is working for now. If it lasts, perhaps this will demonstrate some resiliency, but what would be even better is if the motor was available as a separately purchased component. Overall, I'm upping my score to four (4) stars. The parts were solid, and the documentation was excellent in my opinion. My 11 year old was able to follow assembly instructions without trouble, and where I stepped in to do the software installs, there was lots of detail. I found that if you skipped steps, the documentation was written in a way that would make sure you circled back to do things in the proper sequence. Some experience with Raspberry Pis is quite helpful, I will admit, and if you don't have that you may struggle a little bit. But again, documentation is excellent so I would not let that immediately turn you off to this product. I would give it five (5) stars if the wifi signal strength from the Pi was able to extend further than line of sight. ... show more
