I have really taken to these chisels. I now own 2 sets: these and the 12 piece set and the diamond sharpener. All of their products are excellent, top notch and strong. Most of the sharpening I've had to do is a buffing on a felt (with rouge) wheel to put a fresh edge polish back. The handles feel good in the hand,. The length of chisel shafts is just right for deep and shallow carving. I'm a beginner and these are a big help to making carving easier.

Initial review upon opening. Nice canvas tool roll. Good hard steel set firmly in hardwood octagon handles. They need sharpening. Impressive but not worth any more than the $50 they are asking. All in all a good working set of fishtail gouges.

After just receiving these gouges I think they will be very suitable for the hobbist and small business or seller might need. These were factory sharpened and at this time I can’t tell how long the edges will last. I can say the tool roll is very uniqu as the roll is a very good grade of canvas,also has an internal protective felt over the tools. I also can say customer support is A+. I have used SwissMade(Phelps) tools si I do have a long term comparison. This set tool handles has several rough spots or loose splinter(very small) which easily sanded down. The set doesn’t easily identify what tool shapes and sweeps are included except Fishtails of which there are 2. Good set but the average carver may want to supplement with a smaller V tool.

Pros: • Comfortable to hold for extended periods. • Sizes marked on handles Cons: • Not carving sharp out of the box. • Don't hold an edge very well. Needs to be honed more frequently than other brands. • Schaaf 'brand' etched on shafts. Better quality tools etch sizes on shaft in case handles break or wear out. Not for beginners who don't know how to sharpen steel, and not for more experienced carvers because they don't hold an edge very well. Basically overpriced because of unearned hype.

After wasting money on cheap gouges that couldn't scratch jello, I decided to buy these and I'm so glad I did. They arrived extremely sharp, and the high quality from top to bottom is clear. I will definitely be buying more Schaaf tools.

I bought these because I'm at a stage in my model ship build where my standard Swiss straight chisels no longer work. I opted for the "professionally hand sharpened" version of these because a) I was under the impression that a these were made in the United States and b) they were in fact professionally sharpened. The first thing I noticed when I opened the package from Amazon was the phrase made in China clearly represented on the box. And the photo demonstrates that if these were professionally sharpened, they need to fire whoever this professional was. I thought I could save time by not having the sharpen these myself, never having owned fishtail chisels before. I'm going to keep them and sharpen them myself, but save yourself the money and by the non-sharpened version. Furthermore, if you think you're getting Swiss made chisels, think again. Shop elsewhere.
