Description

CONTAINS LITHIUM AND PTFE IN A FULLY SYNTHETIC BASE! HELIMAX-XP Contains Lithium Stearate thickener and sub-micron PTFE for superb lubrication in a light and clean formulation perfect for helicoid service. The fully synthetic base in HELIMAX-XP is compatible with most plastics and rubbers and all metal parts. NO MIGRATION! Migration from oil separation can contaminate aperture blades and more. HELIMAX-XP has a fully synthetic oil base and NO silicones so it has low seepage so it does not migrate and stays in place. BUTTERY SMOOTHNESS! The consistency of HELIMAX-XP is NLGI 1 (National Lubricating Grease Inst. Grade 1), and is like room temperature butter. HELIMAX-XP provides maximum lubrication with minimal drag. It spreads easily, will go where other greases can't, and stay there. Simply put, it goes on smooth and stays where you put it! HELIMAX-XP has a service range of -40ºF to +300ºF (-40ºC to +149ºC). NO ODOR = NO OUTGASSING! HELIMAX-XP is a light grease with virtually no odor and much lower volatility than conventional petroleum oils. Basically, if you can smell it, you are smelling volatile fractions. In optical instruments, even room temperature can cause outgassing of greases with lighter fractions that lead to deposition onto lens elements. LONG SERVICE LIFE! HELIMAX-XP will NOT gum up, thicken up, wax up or harden with long term use. It also protects metal components against corrosion, receiving the highest anti-corrosion test score of "1A." Great Initial Impressions
My first use of this was for a rebuild and relubing of the helicoids of a non-AI Nikkor 105 f/2.5. After cleaning, application is pretty simple. A little goes a long way as the amount of lubricant you get is basically a lifetime supply. The lubricant came smoothly blended with no separation, and it sticks very well to the helicoils when applied so it's very clean and easy to use. After application, the lens barrel turns very smoothly without any sort of crunch or odd feel that you get with some lubricants- just smooth and silent movement from start to end, basically like OEM. As far as viscosity, this is probably subjective but it feels like this is somewhere between Japan Hobby Tool #10 and #30. It is actually pretty close to the OEM Nikon grease in feel (at least based on the average of lenses I've handled), which is good because it is nice and damped for accurate focus without being tough to turn. I will update if the grease degrades quickly over time, but right now I'm pretty happy with the results. I believe that Molykote EM-30L is said to provide an even closer to OEM Nikon feel (so similar to this, just a bit less viscous) so I'll probably end up trying that at some point for a true comparison. ... show more

I only needed a single molecule of grease but this small tub seemed well-reviewed. I'm glad I bought it because now my children and my children's children to the 77th generation will not want for grease.

Fine helicoid grease

Too heavy for most ses.
This stuff is highly overrated and is much too heavy for use on most vintage lens helicals, even with a very light application. The feel isn't particularly good/well damped compared to vintage OEM greases, either. The one good thing I have to say is that it does appear to remain stable with little separation over time. ... show more
