The canopy is a must for dogs to keep from getting heat stroke, or for white fur pink skin dogs that sunburn. We have two of these that we use for our four small dogs when we go beach camping. They love them! If the sun is in the wrong direction we place a towel or mesh cover over the top canopy to further shield our pups. The canopy is an option, and the cot can be uses with or without the canopy in place.

I ordered 2 of these April 28, As of May 15 and 16 - both of the canopy's had broken. Not from anyone jumping on them, not from wind, not from tugging, but from being in the SUN!!! The tent arches that support them snapped in 2 places near the connectors on all of the arches (2 on each bed). We did not leave them out in rain, or wind. We put them inside during storms. I put them out the other morning and they were fine, and a few hours later when I was walking in the garden I noticed they had snapped. It was a beautiful sunny day, not a cloud in the sky, 85 degrees, a little humid, no breeze. So that is dissappointing. So far the bottom beds are doing ok.. They don't breath like Coolaroo beds do. If they get wet, water pools on them (I hosed the bed down to clean pollen off of it. SO in my opinion, Maybe these are good for inside - but certainly not for outside in the hot sun. You're better off going with a sturdier brand like Coolaroo - or H&K sad to say. We are using this for our cats - no no big dogs. We purchased a golf umbrella with a clamp that we will connect to the bed, like we have with the cool-a-roos. It's cheaper in the long run and much more sturdy. The umbrellas we have on the coolaroos have lasted over 2 years so far and the coolaroo beds we have are over 10 years old and still standing, no wear / tear at all. I guess you get what you paid for. But they did look very nice for a couple weeks!!!

This dog bed feels sturdy and strong. My 11 year old daughter was sitting on the bed while I assembled the canopy so I know it can hold some weight. I found this easy to assemble. I like how the poles for each of the sides came grouped together so I knew immediately where they went. I assembled one end, followed by the sides and left the Velcro end for last. That way it wasn’t a struggle to put any of the pieces together. This isn’t something I’d want to set up and take down all the time but it is possible to do and I will do that when we go camping. In bad weather, I like to remove the canopy and store the bed in my shed but the material feels like it would be fine left outside. The bed can be used with or without the canopy and that is simple to put on and take off as needed. My dog likes to hang out with us around the fire pit and this gives him a cozy place to lounge above the dirt. In the summer it will be cool place to relax, with shade and good air flow.

My dog was uninterested in the sun cover over the bed and pulled it off. Without the frame of the canopy, the bed itself is very wobbly. We have other similar-style beds with more substantial frames. The fabric, when pulled as tight as it would go, even after days of stretching, didn't quite align with the giant Velcro strip used to attach the last side of the sling to the frame. It doesn't meet our long-term goals, and we'll need to make a different purchase.
