Excited over mittens...

TLDR: works great for me, no heat leaking through, no melting or warping, comfortable, easy enough to clean. Everyone has different experiences with products, but my purchase was solid. Full review: Never thought I'd be able to give a positive review of oven mitts, but here I am. I've gone through over a dozen oven mitts in 3 years... all of which struggled to beat the heat of my oven pans and casserole dishes. Some were cloth, rubber coated, silicone coated, all silicone, ultra "might-as-well-be-a-memory-foam-mattress" padded thick dish rags, some the shape of Pac-Man (which is totally irrelevant but they were really cute and I hated that they didn't work against the heat). I bought from Amazon, from Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Marshalls, Kohl's, you name it I tried it because I was so tired of getting burned through mitts just moving a pan to a countertop for 4 seconds. I promise I'm not creating high heat laboratory experiments, playing with lasers beams, placing my hands on the Arizona summer sidewalks, etc.; I just really like cooking and apparently 325-450° is too much for most mitts even though they are supposedly made for handling stuff that comes out of a hot oven. Some even deteriorated, and one melted, after a few months of use (and they leave that horrible burn smell behind after every use, yuck). But THESE oven mitts? No melt, no smell, and I actually feel safe using them the past few months. I intentionally held on to a hot tray for a good minute to test them and I didn't get any serious heat through the mitts. I feel like I can safely carry hot/heavy casserole dishes this holiday from kitchen to dining table and stand there patiently waiting for people to move out of my way without worrying about dropping the hot dish or burning my hand. It's a weird thing to be excited about, but I'll own it. Honestly, I was a bit worried about the textured pattern on the outside of the mitts when they first arrived, I thought they'd easily melt, but I've thus far been proven incorrect. I inspect after every use because of my past experiences with mitts, and haven't noticed any changes to the texture or materials. So far, I'm impressed. They are long and protect my arms when using my small upper convection oven, where sometimes reaching in such a small space I'll bump my wrist on the hot door. (They go maybe 3 inches past my wrist, so not too long but still enough protection). They are padded, but I haven't had any fluffs come out of the padding yet. I've had mitts in the past that unraveled on the inside after just a few weeks of use. I have cleaned them once, which was easy to do, but I recommend using a real towel or a very damp cloth to do so. Paper towel fibers easily stick to the material of these mitts (at least from my experience). Overall, a good buy for me. No problems in 3 months of use, but if something happens then I'll update the review. I gifted one to a friend last month and they said they enjoy baking more because of the mitts (: ... show more

These are the best oven mitts you will ever buy. They are exactly like the calaphalon ones i used to buy at Bed Bath & Beyond and that they no longer carry. I was so happy to find them on Amazon! The quality is amazinhg. I would swear these were the same ones I had. They are machine washable, provide excellent protection and both my small hands and my husband's big hands fit them. It's a one size fits all glove. You don't have to worry about burning your wrists etc as they are covered. These will be a little stif in the beginning, but bear with them as they will soften with use and washing. Can't say enough good things about them. ... show more

I know with oven mitts it's common to have the one size fits all offer but I think they should make them in small/medium and large - especially considering it's mostly (not all) women who use oven mitts or at least the majority of women use them more than men and most women's hands are small! That said? That's the only thing I wish were different about these mitts. They're a bit big for me (see picture of my other oven mitt) but I feel very safe in them :-) By safe I mean I'm one of those people who burns themselves because I either forget to use a mitt or the mitt doesn't protect me well enough. I don't know about you but it takes me at least 3 to 5 seconds to grab whatever I am taking out of the oven and "land" it on my countertop - some mitts just don't hold up and I can feel my fingers getting hot or worse the mitt just burns and smells awful after that while offering even less protection! These mitts are truly great in that respect! I made my own zucchini muffins today (my first low carb muffins!!) and these mitts kept me safe and sound! I love the color and the fact that they're a mix of silicone and cotton - separately? I don't like just silicone mitts - too fake and awkward and only cotton mitts are not strong enough but silicone and cotton together? They're a perfect combination of resilient and yet soft. I highly recommend them the only thing I would ask the manufacturer to change is make them available at least in medium and large. Other than that? I love my mitts and know my baking experience will not only be better because of them but safer! ... show more

No oven mitt is perfect, imo, but these are pretty good

I never realized how difficult it was to find oven mitts that not only work to keep heat out but also fit well until my ancient oven mitts finally bit the dust. Who knew finding an oven mitt had become such a to-do? In the "What Not To Look For in Oven Mitts Dept": I got a pair with thumbs that went straight up, parallel to the finger part. When I tried to use them, the thumbs wouldn't bend in any way that made grasping possible. Obviously not what you want when trying to pull any pan out of a hot oven. If you see that style, look further. You want thumbs that go out at an angle. All silicone gloves were awkward and sticky and my hands spun around inside of them. Also not ideal. Another pair were so long they were like hip boots for arms. I felt like the robot on "Lost in Space." Probably looked like it too. They also required a more sizable amount of storage space than I felt was reasonable for oven mitts. Then, I found these. Yay!! There is just enough silicone to get a good grip on pans and to act as a reasonable buffer for intense heat. The length is long enough to be protective without being ridiculous. The gray color was perfect for my continued efforts to have a tastefully understated kitchen in spite of my occasional impulses to introduce items with crazy patterns and questionable quotes on them. The color also hides discolorations from wayward pan juices. The cloth that makes up the bulk of the mitts makes them more flexible and, thus, easy to use. I have small hands and have never really found oven mitts that conform well to my hands, but these are as workable as I need them to be. Bottom line: After several failed attempts with other mitts, I'm very happy to have found these, and I hope my experience and review are helpful to you. ... show more

Best Oven Mitts I have ever owned!

When we moved into our new place, our old silicone grippers and oven mitts were not enough protection for our hands with the new oven. Purchased two sets of the Big Red House Oven mitts and they are amazing. They really do keep your hands and fingers protected from the hot dishes. I like them so much, I'm definitely adding these to the housewarming gifts/first home/friends that love baking gift list and even thinking ahead for my own kids when they move out. They are well insulated, easy to slip on and off, provide full protection to hands and lower arm area. I rarely ever give 5 stars, but these oven mitts exceeded my expectations and I had no idea how crappy all the other kinds out there were made until I used the Big Red House oven mitts. Great product. ABSOLUTELY BUY THEM!!! You'll wonder how and why you ever used or bought anything else. If fan-freaking-tastic is what you are looking for in oven mitts, these fit the bill. Great flexible and safe oven mitts

We were skeptical about what new oven mitts to get. We ordered the red ones and we couldn’t be more pleased. They are flexible, grip pans and dishes but do not “stick”. Just the right length to protect the forearms without being cumbersome. I have not had to clean them yet. Very easy to use.

Best Oven Mitts I've Owned

These are absolutely the best oven mitts I've ever owned. I've never been a big fan of potholder-style oven mitts as they are thin and relatively small. I've owned other glove-style mitts but they always had lining in them that I felt still transferred heat and was possibly even flammable. These oven mitts are very large and sturdy and completely encompass my hands and wrists. My husband has quite large hands, and these fit him perfectly as well. They are great for everyday oven/stove usage, and also great for using when grilling outdoors. Over the many months (really, years) of daily use, they started to get quite gross from food contact, so we decided to machine wash them. I was skeptical, but they came out looking perfectly brand new! We travel a lot, and these go with us everywhere we go. We just moved into another property we own, and I plan to purchase a second pair in a color to match my decor. Then, my original pair will be in my dedicated travel kit. I never though I would gush about oven mitts, but these truly are the best I've purchased and I can't think of any improvements that are needed. ... show more
