The description indicates that these are "preseasoned and ready to use" however the package included instructions to season before first use. This excellent set of four small cast-iron baking dishes were just spot-on for making a large meal in stages tonight! Different items require different roasting times, so having the flexibility of these smaller roasting pans really came into play during our first test with them. In the first baking dish that went into the oven tonight: egg-sized red new potatoes lightly coated with olive oil and spices (they take the longest to roast when preparing a meal). Fifteen minutes later, the second of these baking dishes went into the oven with mushrooms with salt and shavings of butter (mushrooms have a lot of moisture to release while roasting). Ten minutes after that we added the two remaining of these excellent small cast-iron baking dishes, one with beef sausages and the other with asparagus with more butter shavings on top. This is the genius of what looks like four small cast-iron baking dishes: at first they look far too small to feed four very hungry people a balanced nutritious meal with large portions, yet it is a fact that they are perfect for doing exactly that! These cleaned up easily enough without any hassles, although please note that you need to know how to properly care for cast iron (I’ve used cast iron pans and baking dishes for many years but won’t advise anyone on their proper maintenance here). FIVE STARS, and I’m looking forward to baking four mini-casseroles for four hungry people this coming week using these excellent cast-iron baking dishes that will undoubtedly last for many, many years! ... show more

These skillets are great for anything you might want to cook directly in them or if you want to finish something in the oven. They've worked well when pre-heated in an oven to finish off steaks when not cooking them in a pan that's not oven-safe, or if you want to throw them under the broiler to melt cheese (e.g., on fajitas), or for camping and making per-person sausage & eggs. The build quality is as good as any other cast iron and I think is comparable to Lodge. The cast is hefty (as expected), and there are no seams or sharp edges. The finish is a bit rough (like Lodge) and the seasoning out of the box isn't great, but I did three layers of seasoning with Crisco and they look as good (if not better) than my 8" Lodge skillet. ... show more
