This mermaid terrarium is truly even better "in real life" than it appears on the Amazon product page. First, when you open your Amazon shipping box, you'll see that the mermaid terrarium comes inside its own beautiful box...so cute that you could just tie it up with a ribbon if you didn't want to wrap it or put it into a gift bag--and there is a full-size matching gift card as well! The terrarium is very well-constructed: very solid, the clear plastic "tank" (plexiglass?) is thick and durable yet also perfectly clear and the blue top is both secure and screws on/off very smoothly. The clear and colored plastic "gems" are also very clear and are beautifully shaped and finished to gleam like jewels and they are in generous amounts to fill the base of the terrarium. The white rocks for the grounding layer are solid white, providing a soft contrast to the included colorful moss/seaweed and the twin green sea grass plants--all of which frame and provide arena to display the included starfish, coral, and of course the mermaid herself, resting on an open clamshell. All pieces are well made, detailed, colors have depth yet are not too bright/fake. And: the underside of the lid has LED lights (included/already installed) that alternate colors (blue purple teal-green & a gold/orange) that shine down on the terrarium scene. There is a remote control for the lights with basic on/off but also can be set for different time lengths (1/2 hour up to 8 hours); batteries for the remote are NOT included so you do need to supply 3 AAA batteries for the remote to function. A wonderful mermaid gift and I highly recommend.

Whether you're planning to get this as a gift to a 3-5 year old, or buy it for your own child, you're making the right call. This terrarium is just great for girls at this age range, and is a lot fun to play with. It enhances imagination, allows kids to be creative. I like that kids can set it up however they like, and can be creative in placing the little attachments wherever they like. It is sturdy and feels like good quality, it is glass however, so i'd always be careful. The lighting is pretty cool, especially that it has many different colors, and the mode can be to keep it at one color, or simply keeps switching colors automatically.

My daughter was going to start sleeping in her own bed, so we wanted to get her a nightlight so she would feel more secure. I am glad we got this one for the following reasons: - it provides a creative project for children to do in making it so they feel a sense of ownership and artistic accomplishment; my own children made it the way they wanted -- they added a little picture of the Blessed Mother to watch over them at night by placing it inside the glass ball and pitched some of the creepier items it came with, they got rid of some of the messier moss, and altered a few things. - the remote control is really neat and the kids love using it - the light is beautiful and changes colors - the ball aspect is really cool and reminds you of those snowglobes

The bowl is a semi-flexible plastic, so if it drops it won't break. The opening is decently wide so little hands can get in there. When I first saw this one I was worried the materials looked a little cheap, but it was absolutely perfect for a 3 year old. The only "messy" items are small stones. No sand, no glass, nothing to really worry about as long as the child knows not to put things in their mouth. The light in the cap comes with a very simple remote that turns on or off rotating rainbow colors, but again, that's perfect for a small child. The remote has a timer function, but I'm not sure it actually works to turn off the lights automatically. Overall, it was a big hit.
