My 8 year old loves rocks and gemstones and had such a great time with this kit! To start, the kit is huge. With 8 stones to uncover there is plenty of adventure. My son loved that the kit was designed to look like the continents you would find the rocks on. The book is packed with great information that’s easily digestible for kids and full of great photos as well. My son loved using it to identify and then learn about the gemstones he was uncovering. It took him a couple of hours to finish the kit, which really makes you feel like you’ve got your moneys worth! The tools are great quality and held up to all of the digging needed for the kit, and a lot of digging in the backyard afterwards! I like that they’re plastic - they were colorful and easy to hold. The box doubles as a dig site and a display case. Digging inside of the lid was great because it contained the mess and helped avoid lost gemstones. My son loves the display case. He had a lot of fun using the book to identify the gemstones and putting them into the right spots in the display case. We’ve done a lot of dig kits and this is definitely a favorite! ... show more

My kids had so much fun with this set! They couldn’t open the box quick enough and were so excited when they started revealing the 8 different gems. We’ve done a lot of digging sets and what I like about this one is that you don’t need to wet it down, you can just start digging with the provided tools. The digging surface isn’t too hard or weak and it took them a good hour to get to all the gems. The box also converts to a display case to categorize and display the case. I don’t ever write reviews on anything but I felt the need to share how awesome this set is. My son recently got into stones and rocks, so in my search for things to get him to foster his learning, this set came up. He broke open each continent, but after a while he got tired of hacking the clay in order to get to the stone, so we placed the rest in water. 8 stones are included and a booklet to teach children about the regions the rocks can be found in and some fun facts about that region. ... show more

    • Fun kit good for an afternoon
This World of Gemstones Dig Kit from hand2mind is a fun afternoon activity for young kids. It's basically 3 separate pieces of clay shaped like continents with hidden gems buried inside. It comes with some mini pick axes that are used to break it open and find the hidden gems. You then use the gems to put into a little display box. It's a fun 1 hour activity for one to do on a rainy day. This Gemstone Dig Kit is a fantastic educational tool, especially for remote or homeschooling families. It contains a magnifying glass/brush end, a rock hammer, a three-continent excavation section containing eight gemstones, a box that can be used as a display case/dig area and a in-depth explanation guide. The guide itself reads as a field trip or lesson plan that is easily understood by young elementary aged students. The entire process is interactive and fun while also educational. Despite having a tabletop sandbox as our excavation area, a lot of dirt ends up everywhere, especially during the removal of the gemstones step. Personally, I would recommend this kit to be used outside. The dirt/sand in the excavation site is removable with water which makes cleaning the gemstones very simple. It is a bit difficult to use the plastic rock hammer to remove the stones and it does take a while to completely uncover all the gemstones hidden. We found that the gemstones are located closer to the top so if you have dug about halfway down and found nothing, I would recommend moving to another location and starting to dig there. One of the most exciting parts of this kit is that there are two pages in the manual dedicated to each stone you will uncover. My sons (aged 6 and 8) would not only get excited when they dug up a stone but they would race to the manual to look up which stone they had and read up on it. They could then place their gemstone in the display case and when we had located them all, I had them tell me a bit about the gemstone they had located. It was a very fun experience and they learned from it as well. I would definitely recommend this kit; I found it to be like a field trip at home. My children had fun exploring the kit while I enjoyed teaching them about what they found. If your children are remote or homeschooling, this kit could help compliment your current lesson plan. Or, you can just have fun with the activity while also learning/teaching about continents, culture and gemstones in history. ... show more
