  • Wow this thing is fancy
The media could not be loaded. So I just got a bunch of fancy equipment to start doing videos. Someone told me that I should try one of these cameras sliders. Honestly I have no idea what I was doing. I didn’t go to school for videography or anything but I am self teaching myself. I do like that this slider supports five shooting modes. You can do a time lapse, panoramic, motion animation, and tracking shooting. It also has stabilizers to keep your camera stable. You can control it by an app which is really easy to do. It is silent and very stable. I have a lot to learn with us but so far I am extremely excited about it. It came with a lot of extra things including a carrying case, an extra battery, an extension cord, and a few extra cords. It is a very high-quality machine and it seems like all of the pieces are made out of high-quality carbon fiber and aluminum. I can’t wait to learn more and practice with us so I can improve my videos! ... show more

  • Overall decent as a motorized slider but with one big caveat
The media could not be loaded. I'm not going to get into all the pros and cons of this slider, other people have already done a fine job of that. But I wanted to point out an issue I've had with not one but two of these sliders that otherwise makes a pretty good slider less useful. I've had this for a couple of weeks now and have used it on about 5 different talking head interviews. Overall as a motorized slider it works well but it's not without it's issues. The biggest problem is that there is a noticeable change in the tension of the slider right in the middle. As I mentioned before I've had two of these sliders, the first one I bought had the same issue with the tension in the middle so I returned it thinking it was defective. But the replacement slider I got has the exact same issue so I'm left believing this is a design flaw. When using the motors the change in tension is not too much of an issue at certain speeds but it's still there. At slower speeds and with closer subjects it's most noticeable and it can introduce a bounce to the video as the camera is sliding through the midway point of the slider. On the few clips I've tested with, Warp Stabilizer was able to remove the bounce on some very well (where the subject was further from the camera) but on others where the subject is closer, while it did get rid of the bounce there's that noticeable warping side effect visible in the video. So depending on what you are filming you may or may not be able to get rid of the bounce in post, which means using the full length of the slider may not always be possible. The bigger problem is the change in tension make it impossible to slide smoothly by hand across the middle of the slider. Due to the belt being attached to motors it's not super smooth sliding it by hand to begin with, but that sudden change in tension in the middle is impossible to compensate for so there's no way to use the full length of the slider by hand. I was hoping to be able to replace my other manual slider but now I'm probably going to need to keep it. The other issue I have is that I received a three axis head instead of the advertised ball head. The first slider I bought (and returned) also had a three axis head instead of a hall head so it seems GVM might have changed the head they include with all of these sliders. If that's the case they need to update the listing to reflect that as I'm sure a lot of people (including myself) would prefer to have a ball head. If you never intend to slide by hand then the tension change in the middle might be a complete non-issue for you, and when using the motors the little bounce it causes isn't so bad that I'd recommend avoiding this slider. But if you were hoping to have an all in one slider to use both manually and motorized like I was, this isn't the best option. And I don't feel like they should advertise it as a manual slider since you can't really slide the full length smoothly by hand. ... show more

  • Great slider to use for video and Broll
This camera slider is a great tool to add to my arsenal, and lets me take creative and interesting Broll that is much harder to produce otherwise. I've taken my time before posting this review to make sure I was able to use the gimbal for a decent amount of time, and I'm happy to report that my feedback is mostly positive. Build quality: The rails on this slider are very straight, smooth, and strong, definitely able to support heavy camera loads and move them consistently. The belt drive system that moves the X axis is well made and smoothly moves the camera in all speed modes. For mounting, the heavy duty base plate is very thick and strong., with numerous spots to mount to. Each of the ends has two standoff feet which can be adjusted to different heights and angles, if you want to use it on a table or on the ground. These are made of metal and adjust with knobs on the end. They have a sort of rosette mechanism that lets you set them at various angles. The included ballhead is decent, but far from the best I've ever used. However, it is able to easily hold my heavy battery grip rig and lens without an issue. It's definitely not the smoothest ever, especially in the rotation axis. X Axis: The X axis is controlled by a motor in the base end of the slider, and is very smooth in operation, consistent with positioning, and easy to operate. They tout that you can smoothly move it manually when the gimbal is off, but it does not really compare to the smoothness of my shorter manual slider. Good overall, decent speed capability, and easy to use. Y Axis (rotation): This secondary axis is one of the big selling points of this more expensive gimbal, and wow, it's super cool to create shots with this! Overall, it works well, and you can manually control it with the joystick just like the other axis. However, it has one major issue, and that's the gearing and backlash. While running at slow speeds with a heavier load (5 lbs or so) you can see it shaking a little bit, kind of like struggling to make it move slow enough. This is my one major complaint about the slider, but it is kind of minor, depending on what moves you do with it. Controls: This slider is controlled by a joystick, control knob, and a couple buttons. It's easy enough to manipulate, but the menus can be a little bit confusing, and it can be hard to find specific things. I pretty much exclusively use the video mode on here, so once I figured it out, it wasn't a big deal. The screen is useful and provides information about the speed and parameters you've got. App: Couldn't get it to work, might as well not exist. I wish it worked though, because it would be really useful to be able to set different keyframe points and stuff, assuming it has that capability. Battery: The GVM NP batteries provided with this slider last quite a long time, however there are a couple issues. One, there's no way to tell how much battery is left on the slider at all. No indication on the screen, and absolutely no indication at all on the rotation axis where you put the second battery. Another thing to note, is if you leave the rotation axis battery on it, even if you turn off the slider from the controls side, the rotation axis will stay on, and locked, and deplete the battery until it dies. I had this happen one time, and now I have to make sure I take off the battery every time I finish using it. The batteries do last a long time though, and I've never had them actually die during a shoot, you can definitely get at least 8 to 10 hours out of it. Overall: This GVM slider has added an additional way for me to express my creativity in my broll shots and sped up timelapse-ish shots. I use it al the time when shooting, and overall, it's great. I wish it was a little bit lighter, and I also wish you could more easily center-mount it. Depending on your tripod head you may or may not be able to move the camera from left all the way to right without it sagging, when you center-mount. Alternatively, you can use the tripod mounts at either end, but that is much more of a pain to set up. ... show more

  • Not for any serious videographer/photographer
After my old Rhino slider failed, I was looking for a replacement at a cheaper cost than getting the newer model Rhino. As I use a slider primarily for filming interviews, I thought I would give this one a try as it was much cheaper and I saw a YouTube video that suggested it would give me good results. I shot some test footage and it was awful, very jittery and it had a bad wobble when passing over the center mount. And I was shooting with a stabilized camera and lens! This is not for a professional and not really useful for anyone wanting good footage. I returned it for a full refund. ... show more

  • Very cool rig
This is a really cool rig and works well. You can use it for time lapse as well as a real-time slider. The build quality is excellent and it's pretty intuitive to use. At this price, you really are getting a lot of value.
