  • Short but Informative
As an experienced wind ensemble musician and guitar player, I have always been familiar with the Circle of Fifths, but I have never truly studied and understood it...until I purchased this book. This book does an incredible job explaining (from the ground up) tones, scales, chords, and key signatures, and how the Circle of Fifths can be used in relation to them. It is a very quick read, but dense with information. 100% recommend. ... show more

  • Circle of fifths made easy.
OK, full disclosure: I'm writing this because the author promised me a free book if I wrote a review. But please believe me, if it sucked I would tell you. (Also why would I want another one of his books?) So three stars for not sucking. Another star for being written in a style that's easy and fun to read. You should know that this is a short book, so in terms of words per dollar it' no bargain, but in terms of what I learned in the time I invested it's a small miracle, and that's where it earns the fifth star. I've never studied music, but I did take 3 years of band and at one time could read music easily (it comes back quickly). Reading this book was like having the veil drawn. It explains so much of what I already knew. As I read I had many "so that's why...." moments. I suspect there are many explications of the circle of fifths out there, and I suppose a lot of them are just as concise and easy to follow. What makes this book so valuable is relating it to the guitar. Trying to understand the circle of fifths and its related concepts in the abstract is like studying physics or math (which it sorta is). Taking it in as you literally play it on your guitar makes it just seem like common sense. My guess is that if you are an experienced guitarists you already know the circle of fifths, you just may not know that you know it. This book will make you feel smarter. If you are an aspiring guitarists or singer/songwriter it will probably make you a better one. ... show more

  • Very good book, even for a beginner
I've been playing the guitar for years, okay, decades. I've never had any formal training and whenever I tried to dabble into theory I was lost. This book helped me understand the circle of fifths, and how the harmonic minor scale comes into play with the major scale. The language was very easy to understand as well. This book was a very good step for me to take toward learning what I want to learn. I'm a decent player, but learning theory will make me much better, this was a good start. I would even recommend it for a beginner. I didn't think the book touched enough on guitar playing itself, but in some sense it doesn't need to. ... show more

  • Short, concise, and makes sense!
This is a short, but straightforward and simple explanation of the circle of fifths. I especially like that it is written for guitarists (so many are written for piano). I finally understand how the sharps and flats are added to the key signature. I understood the right side of the circle, but now after reading Alexanders book, I understand the left side by ascending in fourths and flatting the 7th. I don't get it all yet, but its waiting in my brain now and I'm sure I'll come back to this book when things really begin to click. ... show more

  • Strong grasp on the basics
Foundation is key to grow in any field and in the case of guitar this book definitely provides a strong starting point to build upon.

  • Very beginner, not enough guitar specific application
I was looking for a book that would address the question of why certain pitch changes sound good, and how to build music around those changes. This book isn't really that. Half of the book is wasted space, not only in how sparsely printed the pages are ( mostly whitespace .. I've never seen a book so sparsely printed ) but also in directions about how to build keys with the correct sharps/flats/etc. 99% of guitar players don't care about sharps or flats !! It's like the author is saying "you've got this wonderful visual tool - the fretboard - but instead of learning around that, I want to tell you about how many sharps are in this scale..." Furthermore the author only mentions 3 options for 5th/4th pitch changes on the fretboard when there are at least twice that many. So this is really a book for extreme beginners, who have very little education in music theory. If you have ever taken a class in school you could probably skip this book. Only 3-4 pages cover what should really be the main topic of the book, which is *application* of the circle of 5ths in music. Those few pages are gold, which is why I give this book 3 stars instead of 2. If the author wanted to improve on this book I would suggest spending the first third on simply fretboard movements and the last 2 thirds on modulation. Get rid of *everything* else because most of us who are learning guitar simply don't care about the rest. ... show more
