  • It was slightly disappointing.
Platform For Display: Nintendo Wii U Edition: Guitar Bundle
GHL was actually a pretty decent game. It's the first and only game out of the GH series that I have played, so I didn't have expectations going into it. Ultimately, I returned my guitar and game due to the controller malfunctioning. The positives: The guitar design is great. The key layout seems similar to that of a real guitar more so than any of the past versions. Theoretically, the game has tons of content with the new "live" game mode. Basically, it's like turning on MTV(back when it actually featured music) and being able to play along with whatever song happens to be featured at that moment. As you play, you accumulate tokens which allow you to select specific songs from the available library - which is nice. Also, you can purchase tokens with real money, allowing you an unlimited number of selected plays. At first, this sounded like a pay-to-play scheme, and I was wary! In reality, players will accumulate so many tokens just from playing the game for a couple of hours that they will likely never have the urge to purchase anything with real-life money. It's a good and fair system. Another big change with GHL is the fact that you're playing in front of a recorded audience that reacts to how well you match the notes. Since I havent played previous versions of the game, I can't really make a judgement as to whether this is better or worse than an animated audience, but at least it looked cool. I didn't want to miss notes because I'd have a low score... I didn't care about that. Instead, I wanted to play well because I didn't want to disappoint my band-mates. Missing notes causes them to look disappointed and ask, "Dude, what's going on? You're blowing the set." It kinda-sorta adds a tangible level of pressure as if you're really playing a live gig in front of thousands of people! The negatives: The foremost problem I had with GHL was the music. I expected to play songs with classic guitar riffs. Aerosmith, The Beatles, Nirvana, Rolling Stones, Zepplin, etc etc would have all been great choices for anything related to a guitar. Instead, the game features songs by Rhianna and Katy Perry. Of course music is subjective, so just because I'm not a fan of those artists doesn't mean that you wont like them. Here's the problem: guitar hero by definition is a guitar game. The way I envisioned it working is: as the guitarist in the song plays a rhythm, the player must strum the plastic guitar instrument simultaneously with that rhythm. That makes sense right? Unfortunately, many of the songs featured in the game don't have distinct guitar tracks. So you end up simply strumming your guitar-controller along with a visual pattern on the screen. It isn't about matching your hand motion with the sound and rhythm of the music... it's about following a visual pattern on the screen. Basically it's a redesigned version of "simon says." The second problem was far more catastrophic than the first. One of the buttons on the fret kept sticking! As I was following along with the notes on the screen, suddenly I would miss four or five in a row and I'd realize one of the key was stuck. It was annoying! Finally, the game took itself just a little too seriously. At some point the player becomes aware that he/she is watching a recorded audience react to things. You realize a director must have coordinated all of these "actors" at some point. I just imagine him screaming over a megaphone, "okay, pretend you're listening to great music!" "Ok, now pretend the band is awful!" The actors respond accordingly by booing and hissing. It's all very cheezy in the end. It didn't feel real. Due to the guitar malfunctioning, I chose to return the game two days after I purchased it. ... show more

  • Guitar Hero Dead
Platform For Display: Nintendo Wii U Edition: Guitar Bundle
What a huge disappointment. It starts out okay -- you have a single player 'campaign' mode where you are the lead guitarist in a band... well, several different bands, you get passed around more often than Dave Grohl with absolutely no connected story or reason why you're now playing in, for example, an all girl punk band. It's like Quantum Leap, jumping into the eyes of a different musician every set -- you have no identity and this kills what would otherwise be decent presentation and immersion. Less than 3 hours later, this mode is over. There's about a dozen 3-song sets and then the campaign is over. Forget about progressing to harder songs and playing Freebird as an encore, you just stop. Just as you get used to the controller, you're done, and will likely never play this mode again. The other mode is GHTV, harkening back to the days when MTV actually played music. You pick a channel (there's a whopping 2 to pick from) and you are treated to a never-ending stream of loosely connected music videos you can play along to. It took about 5 songs before I got a repeat (Stacy's Mom had it going on for a second time in under an hour), and every hour or so the channels change theme. Not only can you not pick the song you want to play, you can't even stick with a theme very long before surprise, channel two is no longer playing 90's pop, it's now all thrash-death-metal. Have fun. In case you missed that, you cannot choose what song to play. Ever. You can't even buy a song for real money and add it to your library. There's a 24 hour pass you can buy that unlocks everything for a day, or you can drop quarters into the jukebox and buy single plays. Early on you're given a few, but these dry up in no time, after that, the game suffers from F2P micro-transaction madness. The controller is especially disappointing. Coming from RB4 where the guitar was a thing of beauty, this controller feels like a cheap piece of plastic . There's no heft to it, and mine needed some serious WD-40 right out of the packaging, YMMV. It's a shame because the big change to the controller and the notation is welcome. Using a 2 by 3 button scheme instead of the traditional 5 fret setup is much better. You actually have to play 'chords' and it feels much more realistic. Easy mode is easier using only 3 buttons, and expert mode is magnitudes harder because of the chords and 6th button. This is a much better layout than previous rhythm games. The most egregious oversight may be in the 'immersive' mode, the guitars that your crew hands you are clearly not the one you're holding. The UI navigating menus is terrible. I can't even find where to change difficulties in GHTV mode, while the controller itself is easier to use to navigate, rather than doing everything with a standard controller. Speaking of controllers, the Wii U doesn't use the GamePad at all for anything, which is a terrible waste. How about playing a note-track-free music video, or overlay lyrics, show my score compared to my virtual opponents'... something. I've been a huge fan of rhythm games since the first Guitar Hero, though admittedly I like Rock Band much more. This is the first and only time I have been seriously let down. Do some research and read as many reviews as you can before you buy this title, it may not be anything like what you want. ... show more
