  • Guitar Hero Dead
Platform For Display: Nintendo Wii U Edition: Guitar Bundle
What a huge disappointment. It starts out okay -- you have a single player 'campaign' mode where you are the lead guitarist in a band... well, several different bands, you get passed around more often than Dave Grohl with absolutely no connected story or reason why you're now playing in, for example, an all girl punk band. It's like Quantum Leap, jumping into the eyes of a different musician every set -- you have no identity and this kills what would otherwise be decent presentation and immersion. Less than 3 hours later, this mode is over. There's about a dozen 3-song sets and then the campaign is over. Forget about progressing to harder songs and playing Freebird as an encore, you just stop. Just as you get used to the controller, you're done, and will likely never play this mode again. The other mode is GHTV, harkening back to the days when MTV actually played music. You pick a channel (there's a whopping 2 to pick from) and you are treated to a never-ending stream of loosely connected music videos you can play along to. It took about 5 songs before I got a repeat (Stacy's Mom had it going on for a second time in under an hour), and every hour or so the channels change theme. Not only can you not pick the song you want to play, you can't even stick with a theme very long before surprise, channel two is no longer playing 90's pop, it's now all thrash-death-metal. Have fun. In case you missed that, you cannot choose what song to play. Ever. You can't even buy a song for real money and add it to your library. There's a 24 hour pass you can buy that unlocks everything for a day, or you can drop quarters into the jukebox and buy single plays. Early on you're given a few, but these dry up in no time, after that, the game suffers from F2P micro-transaction madness. The controller is especially disappointing. Coming from RB4 where the guitar was a thing of beauty, this controller feels like a cheap piece of plastic . There's no heft to it, and mine needed some serious WD-40 right out of the packaging, YMMV. It's a shame because the big change to the controller and the notation is welcome. Using a 2 by 3 button scheme instead of the traditional 5 fret setup is much better. You actually have to play 'chords' and it feels much more realistic. Easy mode is easier using only 3 buttons, and expert mode is magnitudes harder because of the chords and 6th button. This is a much better layout than previous rhythm games. The most egregious oversight may be in the 'immersive' mode, the guitars that your crew hands you are clearly not the one you're holding. The UI navigating menus is terrible. I can't even find where to change difficulties in GHTV mode, while the controller itself is easier to use to navigate, rather than doing everything with a standard controller. Speaking of controllers, the Wii U doesn't use the GamePad at all for anything, which is a terrible waste. How about playing a note-track-free music video, or overlay lyrics, show my score compared to my virtual opponents'... something. I've been a huge fan of rhythm games since the first Guitar Hero, though admittedly I like Rock Band much more. This is the first and only time I have been seriously let down. Do some research and read as many reviews as you can before you buy this title, it may not be anything like what you want. ... show more

  • Awesome Guitar Hero game for this generation, but if you have Internet
Platform For Display: Nintendo Wii U Edition: Guitar Bundle
The Guitar Hero franchise has been dead for 4 years since 2011 but came back for the eighth generation of video games. Guitar Hero Live's gameplay is quite different from the other Guitar Hero games. While the other GH games uses 5-button guitars, Guitar Hero Live utilizes a 6-button guitar with 2 rows of 3 frets. I would have prefer it being 2 rows of 4 frets or 5 frets, but the 3x2 fret layout is okay enough and it was quite difficult enough to master and I'm an expert Guitar Hero player (with the 5-button guitars). What I love about this new Guitar Hero is the GHTV game mode. While the main on-disc setlist do lack a lot of good songs (there are only 42 songs on the main setlist), the GHTV setlist is amazing and new songs are added to GHTV every week. By the time I post this review, there's over 400+ songs in the GHTV online streaming game mode and they are all free-to-play (with some limitations that don't bother me). Now, for my recommendation about this game, it depends on how well your Internet connection is because the main on-disc setlist alone is not worth this game alone. If you have no Internet access or have bad Internet or often disconnect from your Internet randomly, I DO NOT recommend this game. If you have good Internet connection, then I recommend this Guitar Hero game, but that is if you can get into the new guitar layout. After all, the GHTV online streaming game mode is the highlight of Guitar Hero Live. That is where you would want to spend most of your time on when playing this game after completing career mode. If you plan on buying this game, I recommend buying it from a retailer/store directly that sells them rather than ordering online since ordering online can be risky for the guitars as I read that some people had faulty guitars on delivery from ordering them (though my guitar was completely fine when I ordered it from Amazon, but I might have been lucky). ... show more

  • Fun game, manageable guitar
Platform For Display: Nintendo Wii U Edition: Guitar Bundle
The game is fun, but there is some getting used to how the menus work. The guitar works, but there is squeaking on the strum and the buttons are sometimes sticky. I searched up how to fix it and it said to use oil, I did and now it works but there isn’t a click on the strum in one direction.

The game guitar hero live is a massive upgrade from its predecessor. The new guitar is not to different but is very hard, instead of the buttons being in a row all the six buttons are on the top, wich for usal will take a bit to get use to.The varity of songs is very great with songs from fall out boy and skrillex. And the new graphics make you feel like you're in front of the crowd.with the gameplay being the same as it always was. ... show more
