PROS: well ventilated main compartment; flap zippers have added plastic security latches - great for escape artist pets; front and back panel pop open to create a secure pen when the backpack is not in use; padded shoulder straps; waist strap for added stability; interior compartment includes a short, built in leash with metal attachment point; seems sturdy and well made; folds flat for storage; bottom insert has a removable, washable cover with zip closure CONS: doesn't really work as a general carrier, like for vet trips, because it's not designed for easy in and out and it's taller than it is wide - not a lot of lie down space in the main compartment until the pop outs are opened One star off because of the difficulty in getting a reluctant pet inside. Luring mine in with a treat worked, but I probably won't reach for this backpack often because I have a different one that's easier to get the cat into. If the pop-out panels were built into the sides instead of the front and back of the backpack, this one could have the same kind of front-load flap as my other cat backpack, that would be better. ... show more

This backpack style carrier is perfect for me. I have a really hard time trying to carry either 2 normal carriers or one large one with 2 cats in it, mostly due to injuries, but really just the fact that when I take the cats to the vet (4 in total) I take them 2 at a time. With this carrier, the weight is more evenly distributed, and if I need to have them separate, I can carry the heavier one on my back and the lighter in a small handled carrier. When I first received it, I opened it up and left it out for the cats to get familiar with it for a couple weeks. They took right to it, even lounging in it when it was in the sun a few times. When it was finally time to take them out, I didn't have any problems getting my bigger (13lb) boy into it, and for the most part he was as calm as he ever is during the trip. It has a few different ways of opening up, the top which has a mesh zippered flap and a canvas buttoned flap that can be rolled and buckled when you want more airflow, both sides zip open completely, both having half mesh zipped windows that could be opened, one with a second opening with a mesh pocket on the outside, the other with 3 additional pockets, one of which has an opening to pull doggie bags from it. The front and back panels that expand out to create the playpen both also have zippered flaps to open. All the mesh zippers also have buckles to keep them secured. There is also a short leash secured to the inside to keep the more adventurous from leaping out I suppose, and the front of the bag has a larger flap and zipper pockets that you can fit paperwork in. I really love this carrier, don't know how it would work for dogs because mine are much too big to carry, but for cats, it's pretty great. The other carrier in the picture is the large hard shell one that can fit 2 cats in it (although they don't care much for sharing the space), so I added it for a size comparison, you could fit 2 smaller cats in this, but it would be tight. ... show more

The media could not be loaded. I bought this for my 18 pound Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix (which linguistic savages insist on calling a PomChi when Pomehuahua was right there), and it works for its purpose, but now that I've used it, I definitely think this is a better carrier for a cat. But this is a well-designed product overall, and great if it fits your needs. This is a lightweight yet relatively strong, breathable, largely mesh pet backpack whose principle innovation is it is ability to expand into almost like a mini, contained pet playpen. I got it primarily for the use as a backpack, for when I unavoidably have to bring my dog somewhere like a train where it's absolutely guaranteed to freak out otherwise. The size to which this expands is honestly really impressive given how well it condenses down, and how light it is. The carrier is also cleverly designed to be able to hold the essentials, such as a water bottle and poop bags. The product was strong enough to easily hold my 18 pound dog in "backpack" form. That said, I'm going to be honest, my dog didn't love this thing. I realized that the manner in which I currently carry him (a side sling messenger bag) probably is so amendable to him because it faces forward and he can see me while inside the sling - he didn't like not facing me. While in expanded playpen form, my dog could turn around and get about, but not particularly easily (partly because he's a pudgy guy, but also partly just because he's a dog). That said, I can easily see that this product would be excellent for a cat owner whose cat likes to travel or explore - a cat would probably be much lighter, and they're significantly more flexible and maneuverable, so they'd be able to move around in the product in its "playpen" form much more easily. I honestly might try to see if I know any cat owners who would like this. Or a ferret! I could see it working well for that, too.
