I go through a lot of sponges in my Aerogarden. These are very similar to the name brand sponges; they're a bit lighter in color and a little smaller. I generally soak these in cold water for a bit and then pop them into the microwave for 2 minutes in their bowl of soaking water. Then I cool them down with fresh water and they're ready to plant when cool, and they're larger. They fit better in the baskets after soaking. The covers that come with this set are cut in the same way as the Aerogarden stickers, with a hole in the middle and radiating cuts around the circle to provide extra space for growing plants. ... show more

Not a perfect match for my hydroponic growing system, but they'll do great for using them to start vegetables before transplanting outside. The sponge feels like the ones mine came with and they swell a lot so they'll stay put in the holders I use. Not unhappy with these, just not quite right for my set up. I’m telling you… hydroponics is COOL! If you’re not familiar with these little grow sponges… they are the “growing pods” for seeds in a hydroponic system. If you don’t know what that is, you’ll need to look it up. But these little grow sponges give the seeds the exact environment they need to grow fast and strong. The seedlings seem to grow at twice the speed of those seeds grown in soil. It’s actually pretty amazing. Of course, that is my unprofessional and unsubstantiated statement… not to be considered a fact. But I believe that the hydroponic setup in conjunction with these grow sponges give the seeds the exact environment they need to flourish. These fit the shortage we were needing to fill and will be put to good use starting our late summer and fall plants. There are enough in this set to keep me growing stuff for a while, maybe a few years unless I get a few more growing systems.
