  • Better than it should be for the price!
Color: Coma Red
This is my second Grote guitar, and honestly, I only bought them because they were at a reduced price and I liked their look. Both were tele style, but the first had very sharp-ended, scratchy frets, loose tuners and nut. So I wasn’t expecting much from this “coma red” tele. I am pleasantly surprised! It’s definitely entry-level, but actually decent as budget guitars go. “Good stuff”: A really smooth maple neck and fretboard, absolutely no sharp, gritty or high frets. Combined with neck profile, minimal coating and low action, and it’s a joy to play. Much smoother than many more expensive guitars. The finish was almost flawless and showcases the mahogany body grain. Pickups sound quite nice, considering they’re basic single coils, the three positions and tone knob allowing a full range of twang/treble to fuller rhythm sounds. Pretty pearloid pickguard and black hardware, plastic nut is cut well. Everything attached, no loose screws, etc. “Less-than-good but expected from budget guitar stuff”: Tuners are a little slippery/difficult to dial in string tuning. The provided strings were low quality, but after changing them I still had trouble intonating, especially the low E where I cranked the bridge saddle screw all the way and the spring is fully compressed – still sharp. Will probably need to remove or cut the springs for more room. A couple cosmetic blemishes to the wood and finish, but nothing that impacts playability. So, Grote’s modern take on the tele is good-looking, lightweight and has a fast neck and decent tone. But it also has some intonation issues that require careful set-up and might be frustrating for a beginner to adjust. I’m happier with this model than the GTLM-4 I previously purchased, but they’re stylistically almost identical and this probably just reflects the instrument-to-instrument variations in quality control one gets at this price point. Still, a fun-to-play instrument at a great price! ... show more

  • A Beautiful Instrument, Even If I Don't Understand All Its Parts
Color: Coma Red
For years, I have been an acoustic guitar player. I know my way around a dreadnought. An electric guitar, however, has always felt like a different species of animal; sleeker, louder, and slightly more mysterious. I finally decided to bridge this gap in my musical education and ordered this Grote electric guitar. It arrived, and my first impression was the color. It's listed as "Coma Red," but it's really more of an orangey-red. As a Texas A&M alum, I was initially worried it might be too close to that certain shade of burnt orange from Austin. Thankfully, it's not. It's a handsome color that won't get me in trouble with my friends. The guitar feels solid. The finish is mostly smooth, with a few slightly rough spots that give it character. It’s a beautiful instrument to look at. Getting started was surprisingly simple. I downloaded a tuning app on my phone and had it tuned up in minutes. It has impressively stayed in tune for a couple of days now, which is more than I can say for some acoustics I've owned. The guitar also came with a whammy bar. I am not entirely sure what to do with this item. No hole for it to go. For now, it sits on my desk, a silent, metallic question mark. The most important thing is how it plays. Plugging it into an amplifier for the first time was a revelation. The sound is bright and clear. It’s so much easier to play than my acoustic; the strings feel lighter, and the neck is smooth. It has completely reawakened my passion for playing. I find myself picking it up constantly, experimenting with sounds I could never make on my acoustic. It makes me feel like a rockstar, even if I'm just playing in my home office. This is an excellent guitar for a beginner or for someone like me who is crossing over from the acoustic world. It looks great, it’s easy to set up, and it sounds fantastic. The mysterious whammy bar adds a touch of intrigue to the whole experience. It’s a wonderful instrument that has made playing the guitar feel new and exciting all over again. ... show more

  • A Guitar Seeking A Soul -
Color: Coma Red
. If only there had been an inexpensive yet well made electric guitar like this when I was a teenager learning. All the basics are here and well done for the price point. Modern precision in manufacturing has made a good all-around electric guitar that now waits for the soul of its player to be added. A big part of learning is in shaping the instrument as much as it shapes the player. Learning guitar is more than chords and notes. It includes learning to set up a guitar, adjust the neck, and understand how wood reacts to tension. This guitar is perfect for real learning in all those aspects. I can say it's fun to play right out of the shipping box. The factory nickel strings are a good choice and the frets are a longer lasting alloy. The matte finish on the neck gives a tactile connection, unlike the sterile feel of a high gloss finish. The color looks to me as a burnt orange, transparent to let the wood grain show. The listing says the body is of mahogany, but this is no doubt toona sinensis, which is more in the cedar family but shares characteristics enough to be known as "Chinese mahogany". That means a resonant, light body that makes for a comfortable and lively playing experience. The neck is well made and looks sharp. There are rough spots here and there, like the truss rod opening needing a little refinement and the jack plate not fully hammered down. Still, nothing that gets in the way of playing or learning and is easily corrected. A student or intermediate player won't be fighting this guitar in order to learn. Instead, they'll enjoy how playable and facilitating it is. That's important when starting out. For me, this guitar feels like a new pair of shoes that are slightly stiff at first, but with play, it breaks in and becomes uniquely individual with a good fit. Each of these guitars are waiting for some soul to be added, and that is where the fun begins. ... show more
