  • A Surpassingly Good Guitar (From a Guitar Tech & Guitar Teacher's Perspective)
Color: Daphne Blue
So, I'm really surprised at this instrument. I've been buying inexpensive guitars for my YouTube content (Mr. Austin Music) and then gifting them to students or selling them at cost. Check out my images to see a full breakdown and measurements of the instrument. I expected this guitar to be awful. I thought it'd have bad tuners, need fret work, and a full setup. Well, most of that was incorrect. Out of the box, sure the setup wasn't great but it was playable. The tuners are a 16:1 ratio. Which is fantastic at any price point! They move smoothly and hold tune. The fit and finish wasn't perfect, but for the price they were better than expected. A light rub of some high grit sand paper on the neck it was smooth. The body had little to no paint defects except some small splatter marks, and a stress mark/crack on the treble side of the neck pocket (this was the only alarming thing). These are things you can only see up close, and even at a foot or two away you wouldn't notice. The guitar just looks good, and it is light weight! Mine came in at 5lbs 10oz. That's about the weight of the headless guitars I usually play. The electronics work, at this price point they are fine. It doesn't need to sound great, it just needs to make sound. The neck and setup out of the box was playable. I would recommend a standard neck adjustment, and lowering the saddles for the best playability without any major work being done though. That being said, it isn't hard to learn how to do those things, and even expensive instruments need this to play their best. I had found only 4 high frets that needed a spot level. Not even that much either, the difference was minimal enough I didn't have to crown the frets again after. So I polished them up and it played great! The neck is a bit chunky for a young beginner (child or maybe teenagers) but for a full size adult it should feel good in the and play well. I will be recommending these guitars to students based on my experience, but I'm skeptical I got lucky. So I might try a 2nd one of their models to be sure. ... show more

  • Better than it should be for the price!
Color: Coma Red
This is my second Grote guitar, and honestly, I only bought them because they were at a reduced price and I liked their look. Both were tele style, but the first had very sharp-ended, scratchy frets, loose tuners and nut. So I wasn’t expecting much from this “coma red” tele. I am pleasantly surprised! It’s definitely entry-level, but actually decent as budget guitars go. “Good stuff”: A really smooth maple neck and fretboard, absolutely no sharp, gritty or high frets. Combined with neck profile, minimal coating and low action, and it’s a joy to play. Much smoother than many more expensive guitars. The finish was almost flawless and showcases the mahogany body grain. Pickups sound quite nice, considering they’re basic single coils, the three positions and tone knob allowing a full range of twang/treble to fuller rhythm sounds. Pretty pearloid pickguard and black hardware, plastic nut is cut well. Everything attached, no loose screws, etc. “Less-than-good but expected from budget guitar stuff”: Tuners are a little slippery/difficult to dial in string tuning. The provided strings were low quality, but after changing them I still had trouble intonating, especially the low E where I cranked the bridge saddle screw all the way and the spring is fully compressed – still sharp. Will probably need to remove or cut the springs for more room. A couple cosmetic blemishes to the wood and finish, but nothing that impacts playability. So, Grote’s modern take on the tele is good-looking, lightweight and has a fast neck and decent tone. But it also has some intonation issues that require careful set-up and might be frustrating for a beginner to adjust. I’m happier with this model than the GTLM-4 I previously purchased, but they’re stylistically almost identical and this probably just reflects the instrument-to-instrument variations in quality control one gets at this price point. Still, a fun-to-play instrument at a great price! ... show more

Color: Surf Green
Don't expect anything crazy out of this, replaced the pickups for my own personal taste. Biggest issue was the neck extremely thick and had to sand it down and finished with linseed oil. Body seems to be single coated scratches easily. Guitar itself is very light. As something to work on its not bad for the price. ... show more

  • You can't beat this deal.
Color: Coma Red
After an hour, I can't find anything wrong with it. Neck is apparently roasted maple, bonus. Satin finish on all wood. Action is perfect, so is intonation. Pickups are fine. Best 99 bucks tele I could ask for.

  • Decent budget guitar
Color: Daphne Blue
Nice guitar. The color is great. More of a satin finish than gloss. Hard to tell from the pictures. Sounds pretty good. The frets don't feel too sharp on the ends but I've only had a couple new guitars. The neck feels good in the hand. The body is comfortable and light. Probably could use a little bit heavier strings. ... show more

  • My First Grote. Maybe my last.
Color: Coma Red
Good looking guitar except for; missing screw on switch plate lower, too much material routered out, no place to screw to. Unable to get any volume. Something wrong in pick-ups perhaps. The amp plug was not flat against guitar body with about 1/8th gap in middle on both sides. It was a great price but nothing I really liked about it. Even size wise, seemed considerly smaller than my other Tele type guitars. I did send it back. ... show more
