Frequently asked questions

The Grizzly Industrial G1033X with its 20-inch width and 5 HP helical cutterhead is ideal for a wide range of woodworking projects, from hobbyist crafts to professional-grade cabinetry and furniture making. Its power and precision make it well-suited for smoothing and finishing large pieces of lumber, ensuring a consistently smooth finish even on hardwoods.

The helical cutterhead in the Grizzly G1033X planer features small, square carbide inserts arranged in a helix or spiral pattern. This design reduces noise and vibration compared to traditional straight knife cutterheads, offers a smoother finish with less tear-out on tricky grain, and allows for easier changing of individual cutters when they become dull.

Yes, the helical cutterhead in the Grizzly G1033X is specifically designed to efficiently handle hardwoods with ease, providing a smooth, tear-free finish. The high-quality carbide inserts are durable and long-lasting, reducing the need for frequent maintenance. When required, individual inserts can be rotated or replaced easily without having to remove the entire cutterhead, saving both time and maintenance costs.

While the Grizzly G1033X 20-inch planer is a professional-grade tool, it is designed with user-friendly controls and a straightforward setup process. Beginners might require some time to familiarize themselves with its functions and safety features. However, the comprehensive manual and online resources provided by Grizzly Industrial facilitate a smoother learning curve. Prior experience with woodworking machinery is beneficial but not necessary.

  • Beast
I have had this planer for close to 7 years. I use it as a hobbyist. It is a beast compared to the Delta 13" Benchtop I upgraded from. I have run a couple of thousand board feet of teak and mahogany through it and I have not rotated the carbide inserts once. I still have 3 more sides to go. My planer came with a byrd head with 10 spare inserts in case any get chipped. Newer planers may come with the Grizzly head which has straight inserts instead of inserts with a small radius like the Byrd. I will probably need new inserts in about 20 years. Replacement inserts are available from vendors other than Grizzly. The planer is significantly quieter than my old planer. My dust collector makes more noise. I don't wear hearing protection when using it. No bearing replacements or other maintenance was done other than a gearbox oil change and regular lubrication. The 20" width allows me to flatten glue ups before sanding. Which is a real time an labour saver. This planer has a serrated feed roller instead of the rubber one on my delta. As a result of this the minimum depth of cut is around 12 to 15 thou. (about a quarter of a handwheel turn). If you take anything smaller the feed roller will leave marks on your work piece. I have never used the table locks. About 6 months ago I installed a digital height gauge I got on sale. Would buy again. Would recommend to others. Mikail ... show more

  • Great addition to the shop
Grizzly 1033x was delivered at 11:55 am from UPS and was up and running by 1:30. Very powerful fast machine with a quiet smooth cut. It came with a 30amp plug on the power cord prewired. I added the recommended caster kit and it rolls great.

  • It’s a MONSTER!
Just got this to upgrade from a Delta 15” x5 that I had upgraded with a helical head. Every thing is fantastic so far. I had to drain the gear box right off the bat because it was under filled and didn’t want to mix oils. It was easy to drain and fill with an oil pump that people typically use in boats. I filled it with 85w 140 gear oil which was recommended in the manual. I also added tension to the belts. Cutter, I think, is a bird head and not a grizzly house brand. Mine came with a serial number and was assembled in late 2020. I have it set up on a Bora 3550 Mobile base and it rolls like a dream. I don’t use this in a production shop but I’m sure it would be right at home in one. The 5hp motor is a monster and appears to be a different motor than what’s in the older Grizzly G0454Z with the spiral cutter. Over all I am 100% happy. Working on my older delta I can honestly say that the gear box and and the way they work are all identical between brands, ie... Powermatic, Jet, Delta. All are made the same In China and there are few differences except in looks and aesthetic touches. These machines are quite simple to service and maintain, it’s not a quick job but it’s not overly complicated. Also because all these machines have the same parts, they are gonna be readily available if something were to go wrong. That being said I don’t foresee any problems and this should outlive me if it’s taken care of. I wouldn’t buy a Powermatic over this just for a paint job, there really isn’t a difference. It’s a great matchine and I saved $1500 over a jet or Powermatic! ... show more

  • Bearing Problems/Replacement Cutterhead Cost
Purchased the G1033X in March of 08 and in February of 09 had to replace the bearings for the cutterhead. Talked to Grizzly and because under warranty, they sent new ones. It was definitely not an easy replacement. January 10 had to replace bearings again. Before purchasing this planer, beware of the cost of the replacement carbide inserts. They are $62.95 per 10 pack. I need to replace all, as I have used all 4 sides, and it will cost me roughly $650 to do so! Grizzly offers no volume discount on carbide inserts. Whether you buy 10 or 1000, the cost is still $6.30 each. It is almost cheaper to replace the cutterhead with a Byrd (certainly cheaper in the long-run). When I talked to Grizzly, they said "That's why not many people purchase this planer...". If I had to do it over again, I would have purchased a standard 4 knife planer and upgraded to the Byrd spiral cutterhead. It would have been MUCH cheaper. ... show more

  • 5 years in a production shop with no issues
This thing has run like a champ. No issues at all. The knives have been rotated twice but there have been 1000's of board feet of lumber run through this (some of it pretty rough). Can't say enough good things about this planer (basically the same as the powermatic model but ~$1000 less). Its too bad the other reviewer had a bad go with some parts (maybe a bad lot). But the other grizzly tools I've used have been trouble free as well. Happy woodworking. ... show more
