  • High maintenance Unit
I have the spiral cutter on the 20" unit. I have been having this unit for one year and have had my share of problems. When I first received the unit, it would not shift. Grizzly came to the conclusion the unit was damaged and sent me a new knob and shaft with no instructions on how to repair. It is not easy to replace the shaft, so I decided to use it with one gear. The indexed spiral cutter blades were torqued so tight that I stripped three star screw drivers and only loosened one cutter. The unit comes with a very small star allan type wrench which in no way can loosen the screws. I had to get an impact wrench to loosen 90 cutters. Had to replace several stripped screws. Once all 90 cutter blades were rotated, the little blades left uneven markes on the wood. The blades are supposed to be indexed so that they are self aligning. That is not happening here, I am frustrated and wasted a full day working on trying to align the blades. If you are considering a spiral cutter, you may want to think hard about the old straight blades. Next thing to happen is the start capacitor blow up. Grizzly said my one year warranty was up by one month. So I purchased a new one which Grizzly sent by Postal Service that took one week to get to me, even after I asked them to send it via UPS. It is very difficult to change the capacitor because of the location of the motor. It seems as if Grizzly is using cheap capacitor because now my Jointer is down awaiting a start capacitor... I am not sure I would buy from Grizzly again. ... show more

I just bought this planer and set it up today. It takes a couple hours to uncrate clean up and assemble. I took my time and set everything up the way it explained in the manual. The gearbox was a little low on oil before I started but other than that it came in great shape. Note that this review is not based on a lot of use but I find the planer fantastic. It's amazingly quiet and produces a very clean cut and smooth finish. Time will tell but it feels like a very solid machine. ... show more

  • Typical chinese manuf. quality.
I just burnt a motor on this machine, the Chinese motors are junk! The motor bogs under load and has excessive shaft play causing vibration and belt wear even when belts are perfectly tensioned. I also just had a failure on the grizzly 8 inch spiral cutter-head jointer its Chinese motor has play in the shaft causing excessive start and stop vibration and premature belt wear and shaft/key failure. If you buy one of these machines prepare to hone your mechanical skills. They are poorly assembled and need to be thoroughly checked and calibrated. Oh and their service/owner's manual is about 75% incomplete missing all of the really important technical information like infeed and outfeed wheel pressure adjustment, gearbox assembly etc. Be prepared to have your mind blown with their customer service too when they tell you to correct their design flaws by doing things like drilling holes through motor shafts and grinding down the ridges on the feed wheels... I also had to replace the gearbox gasket as it leaked from the day it arrived. It only took grizzly 14 months to send me a replacement... It showed up, and bang the motor failed. I called grizzly, but was 2 months out of warranty... Bottom line: you get what you pay for I guess? But if you're a professional user, you'll thank yourself for buying a better machine with more reliability. I should have bought a delta or powermatic. ... show more
