Description

This is meant to be a fun, simple product to amuse and teach everyone a little bit about liquid crystals and phase change! The Mood Mouse Pad offers dual functionality: A fully functional, ultra-thin (no rubber base) mouse pad and a heat sensitive color changing liquid crystal mood toy. The surface changes from black to blue, red, and green as liquid crystal shift phase with the changing temperature. It doesn't change colors just because you touch it. The temperature has to change and that can take some time. Hot hands or warm coffee cups are simple ways to see the phase change in action.

  • Colors work as described, easily scratched surface
I really like these mouse pads. I have an older one from a different company which has a divot in it from something being dropped on it. I bought one of these Mood Pads to replace it. Unfortunately, within a day or two, I discovered that the surface of the Mood Pad is very each to scratch. Simply dragging the mouse across it with a small piece of debris will scratch the plastic surface. It should be more durable. ... show more

  • Passable, but nothing spectacular - unfortunately
I used to own a similar mouse pad. I accidentally damaged it by dropping a paperweight on it, leaving a mark and displacement of the liquid crystal material within. The company that made it is no longer in business, and this Mood Pad is the only existing competitor. I can compare the two side-by-side. First off, the Mood Pad suffices, but it was a tad disappointing as I'd paid $15 for the competing item some 15 years ago... The competing pad is thicker, and 1.5" longer. Clearly, there is more liquid crystal within to show a brighter display. There is more liquid crystal element inside the competing pad, which renders a brighter display. It is showing a vivid green and blue right now. The mood pad is a very dark green, which turns blue then black when touching it. At cooler temperatures, the competing model shows a vivid red whereas the Mood Pad is a muted red. It's there but it's not as eye-catchy. And that's the word: "Eye-catchy". Or lack thereof. Maybe I was expecting the new model to act like the competitor. On the plus side, the Mood Pad will register heat from the bottom side. And more importantly, the surface is smoother - the Mood Pad gets some kudos. But, all in all, the defunct brand that made the competing mouse mat put on a more eye-catchy display. And given how most mousemats have trite objects such as palm trees or baby cats, something unique like this should be eye-catchy. Not muted. ... show more

  • A little "moody"
We thought the mouse pad did not work, so I return it. But then received an e-mail from the company president who pointed out that ambient air temperature effects how well the pad works. Since we live in Hawaii, with no air conditioning, our normal air temperature is about 80 degrees. Liquid crystals track temperatures between 68-76 degrees. He sent us a replacement and once we chilled it, we could see hand imprints. It will work better for us as we get into cooler, winter temperatures here. As he pointed out, it is a very cool science lesson for kids. As a mouse pad, it works well for mouse movement and stopped sliding once I took the plastic sheet off the back! ... show more

  • Does not work as mousepad
Updating this review, because I’ve since found a mouse that works with this mousepad. Although it will change color when head is applied (like resting your head on it for a while) previously, it does not work at all as a mousepad; possibly because it’s too reflective. So it depends on the mouse. It may, or may not work. ... show more

  • Decorative, not functional for the long term.
This mouse pad isn't nearly as responsive to thermal changes as the one I had in the 90's, but once it acclimates to your home then it does OK. the greater the temperature difference between your body/hand and what the ambient temperature in your home is the better it will be. The mouse pad is VERY thin, which initially is a good thing, partnered with the slightly sticky backing it stays in place and is a very smooth mousing surface, for about a month. After about 4 weeks of usage the common grit and dust of anyone's work surface proceeds to adhere to the back of the pad, making it unable to stay in place properly, and once this happens - due to the thin/rigid material it is constructed from the mouse pad eventually starts to curl in on itself and will NOT remain flat on any surface, at this point just a few months after purchase, the mouse pad is curling in on all sides, only the center/middle is in contact with the desk and irritates my wrist/hand by rubbing those raised edges no matter how careful I am. If you plan to do anything more then very light/occasional computing then I would recommend you find something else to mouse on, as this won't suit any kind of sustained use. ... show more

  • Cool mouse pad with one flaw
Obviously this mouse pad doesn't "detect" your mood, rather it's a mouse pad that reacts to heat. That said, it's pretty cool. The mouse pad itself is very stiff, with no real give or play in it. The one flaw that I can detect is that the bottom of the pad is a "non skid coated" material that does stick well to something like my wooden desk, but truth be told I prefer the rubber backing most mouse pads use these days. I have a feeling the non skid treatment won't last forever, and when it does I'll be buying another mouse pad. ... show more

  • Life is short. Get a cool mousepad.
I love this silly little thing. My mousepad at work was a few years old and looking dingy, so I was looking for something new. I found this one in the same price range as other "standard" plain mousepads. I read the reviews that said it wasn't very vibrant, but figured worst came to worst it was still a mousepad, and I hadn't spent anything above what I would've spent. Long story short, it works like a charm. It was a hit in my office and everybody wants a cool color-changing mousepad like mine. Several people wanted to touch it and we definitely lost a good 15 minutes of productivity. I'll probably buy a few more for Christmas gifts. Very happy with this purchase. Get it. ... show more
