Have not tried yet but, like another reviewer posted, the item was not as pictured. Got the XXL version. Dimensions are the same, but the pictured item is shown as 15.3" to the top of the blade (which really didn't seem quite right to me, judging from the picture). The top of the blade is more like 10" high, and one of the sides does go up to 15" - it has a semi-circular piece on top to support the log. This might actually be good for most logs, so we'll see. As for construction - it bolts together so it will not be as strong as the units that are cast as a single piece. It is also much lighter than my other one.

I brought this in to a dude that sharpens knives and pretty much anything you can bring in. He sharpened this thing to a level that's almost scarry. Now an easy whack with the hammer and I can make kindling.

What I ordered was not what arrived. What I received has an extra piece that goes above the edge. I have put the item together; but, one of the bolts has stripped - it won't screw all the way in or come out and I cannot take it apart... so, I'm keeping it. It will be interesting to see if the upper part is a help or a hindrance.

I already had a smaller version with the closed entry, that works well m, but I often get items stuck. This is a really good companion, using it for the larger pieces and getting them small enough for the other contraption. It really need bolting down, so have a large stump or round to site it on. Comes for robust hardware and stands up to a bit of bad coordination with the back of the axe. It can be a bit harder to balance items, so think about the size of your starter wood and which kindling maker you may prefer if not both

I had hoped this would make splitting logs easier, but unless the logs were less than 8 inches wide and not more than 16 inches long, I just couldn't do it, and I generally couldn't stabilize the log. I suspect all variations of this design are equally limited. I plan on sharpening it and trying again. On the ground, it simply bounced, on asphalt it worked better , and when attached to a couple 2x6 boards it worked best, but ended up splitting one of the boards. I also split the handle of the sledge hammer (Shout out to JB Fiberweld and zip ties!). The open top is wise as it would be easy to accidentally wedge a log into a closed top and have a lousy time removing it. It worked very well to split somewhat smaller pieces into kindling and is certainly safer than an axe or hatchet. Easy to assemble and very sturdy, it gave no indication of damage after I abused it.

This may be good for soft wood, but I had a hard time trying to split oak, even pieces that were 12' in length. It comes with screws to secure it to a base so I may have to try that.

Solid set. The blade isn't nearly as sharp as I had hoped it would be, so you really can't use a hatchet to cut little kindling. Rather, you really should use the hammer side of a maul to slam it down, and it works for that. You can use a 3-5lb sledge too for dry, seasoned wood -- although you'll have trouble with green wood. Easy to assemble and comes with extra screws that you can put it on your chopping block/stump if you have one (we don't). It works fine right on the ground. Just be careful swinging a full maul, but we had no issues splitting half a cord. I really only used this for the tough pieces that are knotty, as I rather just use the axe side of the maul. But you can definitely trim out kindling with this and a small sledge.
