  • Great Overall
Bought it to clear the clutter of my desktop, having to work with two laptops (Windows and Mac) plus my home PC (Linux) and even a Raspberry PI that means a lot of space wasted, basically it was multiple screens and the anoyance of swapping mouse/keyboard dongles frecuently, I was tired. After a few tweaks managed to put it to work, here it is my experience after almost a month of use: Linux: Worked almost flawless out of the box, just one issue pending, after switching to linux, the desktop is behaving like its a new environment, my windows are still there, but things like the background wallpaper on the second screen randomly dissapear, when I open the desktop properties it opens multiple windows like there are more than two screens, this seems OS related but is the only thing pending to make it a perfect experience, i'm still googling to solve this. Windows: Almost flawless out the box too, the mouse/keyboard weren't working after switching, I needed to unplug/plug the dongle to make it work again, after a few google searches found out that this could be solved unchecking the option "Allow the computer to turn off this device" on the device manager for the USB Bus, after that the experience has been perfect. Mac: Here is were the experience hasn't been so good, I 3d printed a laptop stand to keep the two laptops with the lids closed to save space, the Mac won't wake up if the lid is closed... so, I thought that after all the space saved with this I can live with the Mac on one side, no problem, but... when switching to the Mac the behavior is always erratic, sometimes just one monitor is activated, sometime the two are activated but the order of the screen previously setted is lost, even had a pair of crashes that rebooted the Mac... again, this can be OS related, but its has been a real pain to put the Mac to work correctly. This was my first experience with a KVM Switch, I can call it a hit, the device does what is supposed to do, this is my summary: Pros: - Up to 4 PC's with dual monitors @ 60 Hz. - Linux and Windows experience almost flawless. - All the HDMI/USB cables included. - Includes a USB cable for power but the device works perfectly without it. - Build quality feels very sturdy. - It may seems expensive, but other options with 4 pc's and dual monitor are way more pricier. Cons: - My Mac experience has been very painfull, there is another review indicating that worked perfect with Mac, maybe there is some tweaks to do on my side, so if I make it work I will update this review. - No USB port for sharing other devices like external drives or webcam, this would make the device perfect. - I needed to buy a lot of adapters, this is not by any means a fault of the manufacturer or the product but i needed to buy 2 USB-C to HDMI adpater for the Mac, One for the PC, one DP to HDMI and one VGA to HDMI for my other laptop, so keep in mind depending the configuration of your devices this could be an extra cost. ... show more

  • An OK KVM, but lacks key features to make it a great KVM (e.g. EDID)
Like the headline says, this device works according to it's specifications. However, there are some key features that I should have been looking for in hindsight that would have saved me a great deal of headache: EDID (Extended Display Identification Data): A support feature that allows for KVM fast switching and is ESPECIALLY helpful for laptops operating in a clamshell state. What it actually does is allow for a simulated display to always show as plugged in to the system even when you've switched the KVM to another computer. This makes switching between systems much faster and cleaner, but more importantly is that it can prevent systems from sleeping from having no running display. Without EDID, the KVM operates in a same manner as manually plugging and unplugging your devices from one computer to another with the push of a button. It's convenient to do it at the push of a button, but some systems (cough cough MACBOOKS cough cough) do not wake well when switching (if it wakes at all). You can configure Microsoft systems well enough to prevent sleeping issues when switching the KVM. ... show more

  • Near perfect solution for home/work environments
Great for multiple computer and display setups. Easily switch contexts via the keyboard or on the device itself. Tossed my separate HDMI and USB switches and never going back! Only wish it had a single audio output jack, but managing okay with multiple cords for wired headphones.

  • Disconnects/reconnects all USB devices on every switch
My current KVM is an IOGear 4 port DVI switch. I upgraded to a new 4K monitor and needed to buy a 4K kvm switch. Unfortunately this switch has an serious design defect plus several minor annoying defects The major design defect is that it disconnects and reconnects all connected USB devices each time you switch between machines including the keyboard/mouse plugged into the designated "K/M" ports on the front. On Windows this causes the device-disconnect sound to be played when you switch away from Windows and multiple device-connect sounds to be played when switching back to Windows which is really annoying. You can disable the playing of these sounds (globally) but they are useful to have to detect devices (other than your mouse and keyboard) disconnecting. On Linux this defect is clearly visible: # lsusb Bus 001 Device 005: ID 04fe:0006 PFU, Ltd Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite2 Bus 001 Device 004: ID 047d:1020 Kensington Expert Mouse Trackball Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0b95:6802 ASIX Electronics Corp. It is not. They said they were going to talk to their "engineering" but never did respond further. Neither my previous IOGear nor the 4K TESmart (B08124CPLM) I just ordered to replace the GREATHTEK behave this way. They maintain the USB keyboard and mouse connection to the host when you switch away. The GREATHTEK also has a few other annoying defects: 1) the k/m port (keyboard/mouse) are on the front of the unit. they are on the rear of every other KVM I've owned which is where I want them, out of the way. 2) the supplied cables are poor quality and are separate hdmi and usb cables. On my previous IOGear and also on the TESmart the hdmi and usb are molded into one single cable which makes cable management way easier. 3) the supplied cables really need to be 2ft longer. 4) the power connection (not required as the device can be powered off usb; but useful in case of usb issues) is a micro-usb. This is one of the mechanically weakest connections available. Both my old IOGear and the TESmart use a barrel connector which is way more mechanically reliable. 5) No power adapter is provided, you need to supply your own USB charger. All this is too bad as the picture quality (4K@60hz) and switching speed were good. GREATHTEK needs to redesign this. They also need to improve their product support. ... show more
