  • Just what I needed
Style: Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer
I was torn between buying this sprayer or getting the more expensive Graco Magnum X5 or X7. However, my needs are few and my intent is to spray the interior of my workshop and spraying the exterior. so the basic Magnum was all I really needed. It took me a half gallon of fairly expensive Semigloss paint to determine I was using too much pressure and laying down the paint too thick. So, after ordering another two gallons I was able to apply two and a half gallons of paint to arrive at a suitable two coat paint application. That made me very happy. These are my lessons learned: 1. Don't be in a hurry. Set aside time to get used to the sprayer and do two coats. It's worth it. 2. Invest in your masking materials. A poor mask job with cheap stuff causes too much waste. 3. Allow the paint to dry before removing you masking. Drywall paper will come up with the masking tape, and I was using frog tape, and it'll cost you touch up time and effort. 4. If you job requires a break till the next day, clean the sprayer after using it and don't leave paint in it overnight. (I was told this by a couple of pros who had employees make that mistake. 5. This unit is not the same as the more expensive Graco Sprayers, it is not rebuildable. So take care of it and keep it clean. Recommendations: I found the Graco Magnum a great entry level sprayer for projects and home use. This unit is for the occasional painter and hobbyist. Since this is my use level, it more than satisfied my needs. Let the pros buy the pro level sprayers which are quite expensive. I'm satisfied enough to recommend the Magnum to the home hobbyist and for small projects. Pro painters, and I know a couple of them, use this same unit for touch up work, will find this unit satisfying. Conclusion: I am satisfied with the construction and usability of the Graco Magnum. I highly recommend purchasing one for anyone who paints a room occasionally or has a number of projects to do. ... show more

  • 200' of Five-foot Concrete Wall in Two Hours
Style: Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer
I made a little cart for this using some scrap wood and a mover's dolly that we already had. It holds the machine, a 2-gallon bucket of paint, and some tools and rags. Cut a hole in the top of your two-gallon bucket to slip the suction hose in so you don't have an open-top paint bucket sloshing around. Be sure to use the suction-hose filter. The machine is easy to use if you carefully read the extensive instructions several times beforehand. The extra set of paint-proof, water-proof laminated instructions is very nice. Then, fill up a bucket with clean water, and practice spraying with that. Get used to operating the power switch, priming it, PRESSURE RELIEF, locking the gun, and spraying with the water first. This will really help you to get more comfortable with the upcoming paint job, and you won't be fumbling around for the instructions. The little attachment on the end of the drain tube didn't make any sense - I removed mine. I sprayed 200 feet of five-foot-high concrete wall in two hours. It makes very little noise. It only runs when you are spraying. The spring in the gun handle is not overly stiff, and the gun itself operates very smoothly. They say you don't need to thin the paint, but the Behr Ultra Premium Exterior paint I used was so thick that it was close to a gel. I went ahead and thinned it with about 4-5 oz of filtered water per gallon of paint (they recommended a max of 8 oz per gallon). This made the paint a lot less like gel and much more like paint. Cleanup is made much easier by the fact you can use an included accessory to hook your garden hose into the suction tube and just let the water run through to flush it out. There is a small bottle of Pump Armor preservative included. One part of the directions say to dump the Pump Armor straight in the suction tube, but you will waste a lot this way. Instead, remove the suction tube and use the bottle of preservative and the included short vinyl tube to force the preservative up into the pump (instructions wrapped around the bottle). The negative things are the stiff hose, and the fact that the supplied gun does not have a swivel. No swivel between the gun and the stiff hose means you are constantly fighting with the hose a little. You can get pretty close to the coverage stated on the paint can with this thing. I figured I was getting 300 square feet per gallon, but I was painting very coarse pitted concrete, so painting a normal smooth wall should give you the full coverage of 400 square feet. I started off with the pressure set to full blast -- that was not necessary. Setting the pressure half to two-thirds of the way up used less paint, and produced less over-spray. The supplied tip is a 515, which is the biggest size you are supposed to use with this sprayer. It gives a fan that is 10-12" wide. The last amazing thing was that I didn't get any paint on me, my glasses, my shoes...anything! Cannot speak to reliability, but I cleaned the machine as well as I could and we will see what happens the next time I fire it up. Update 09-08-2023: Have now used it for three jobs without problems. ... show more

  • Easy, Fast, Pro-looking finish.
Style: Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer
Easy setup. Easy to use. No clogs, no problems. Reaching small spaces was no problem. Clean-up was a breeze. I emailed Graco about extensions and got a reply within minutes, twice. A tiny female sprayed about 240 linear ft, 6 ft fence with 30 gallons of oil-based stain/protect "Ready Seal" in a few days having never spray painted before. Watch the overspray. We covered the side of the house but the stain still got on the house a little. We had a bit of wind but had to beat the rain. We pre-tested with a wood moisture meter, put the stain can and sprayer on wheels, hung a drop cloth on the opposite side, and she wore a full-body suit and face mask. She's already thinking of other projects. ... show more

  • Easy to use once it's all set up. Chugs paint.
Style: Project Painter Plus Paint Sprayer
I haven't used this a lot yet - painted a room including ceiling. Cons: I wish the hose was more flexible, it is very stiff. A lot of paint is lost in the tubing. I recommend getting a 'blow out' adapter like you would connect to blow out a garden hose, then before flushing the machine with water you can use air (sprayer unplugged) and simply drain all the paint in the hose back into the paint can with air pressure to lessen the waste. Pros: incredibly quick and easy once it's set up- I went through a gallon in about 3 minutes painting 3 walls. The coat looked great, I just kept the sprayer moving. My last paint sprayer was just a handheld unit and it just wasn't feeding the thicker paints anymore, this is a huge upgrade. Should have bought it years ago. ... show more
