I live on a river. My kids learned to swim wearing life jackets so I've become somewhat of a connoisseur of jackets for kids. This is the best for young swimmers. The double strap that feeds under the crotch and buckles on both sides of the front is the best. The jacket can't wiggle up over your child's head. These double straps are covered with a nylon sleeve that can adjust over the straps for comfort. The double straps stay balanced and don't pull uncomfortably and make your child float diagonally in the water. The jacket and straps are strongly sewn and can move back and forth in the same manner as a belt on belt loops. Our three year old started with this with the addition of a pool noodle. She's 5 now and this will be all she needs for a 40' deep lake. I'm buying the next size up for next summer - this is the only jacket that has double straps under the crotch in a size that large. I wouldn't consider putting a child in a river or lake without the under leg straps. If you had to pull the child out by the strap behind the neck, your child would slide right out. My granddaughter (50 lbs.) wears a size 6 t-shirt snugly, a 7/8 t-shirt loosely. This jacket in a large was just right - snug but she can breathe. The straps around and under have enough room to tighten snugly but leave room to grow. Another summer Sadly, this will be the last year in the XL. She was able to wear it for two summers due to a growth spurt making her longer but not fuller. The straps were able to lengthen. This summer, she wears a 10/12. ... show more

The only complaint that I had from my son about this is that the strap through his legs is uncomfortable. It's a necessary evil though as it keeps him from sliding out. We've used this on the beach and at the pool. It's held up well and keeps my kid sufficiently above water.

Was on the fence because this one wasn’t coast guard rated, but it’s a great vest. Kiddo played in the pool for hours, even jumping in the deep end, and I had no concerns. I ordered 2 different sizes for 2 kids. The small seems a bit big for my 3yo that is 30lbs and 36” tall. I like the handle on the back in case I need to grab her. I got the large for my 5yo that is 40lbs and 45” tall, it fits him very well. The zippers are sometimes hard to manage and the buckles seem flimsy. You have to double check that they actually buckle. We will be using these for pool and lake swimming with an adult close by and I think they’ll work well for that purpose. They are not USCG certified (only an EU certification) and the buoyancy rating is 50M (the lowest). I wouldn’t trust these for boating or open water. ... show more

I purchased this recently to use in the pool for my special needs child, who does not know how to swim. It's a very lightweight product and I opted for the pink color since it's advisable to have brighter or more noticeable colors in the water so that it can easily be detected/spotted. My special needs child didn't seem to mind having this on. This was easy to use and the zipper and strap combo added extra security to keep the vest in place. Keep in mind that this is not to be used for super active sport-type water activities and that it should be used for "calmer" water settings, like a pool.
