  • A peanut prism with a specific purpose... precision.
This is intended to be used inverted as in my picture, with the prism at the bottom end of the rod as to negate the error that can accumulate when the prism is on top. Unlike most survey layout gear, this outfit is a bit lightweight as the rod sections (4 total) are made from approx. 7/16" diam aluminum and all screw connectors are approx. 1/4" diam threads. The prism itself is a somewhat standard glass peanut prism in an aluminum housing sitting on a rotating plastic mount attached to the orange plastic housing with measurements (in millimeters) from center of prism along with prism constant molded into the plastic casting (a nice touch). I have not used this for layout yet, when I do I will edit my post accordingly. For now, this looks like a decent tool to keep in the survey truck... just be careful not to step on the lightweight rod as I am sure it will break or bend easily. The somewhat delicate parts are the only reason I can see so far to keep this from a 5 star review. Also, the included storage bag is a nice addition and keeps all the pieces securely together. ... show more
