  • Nice Assortment of Harder to Find Glaze Brushes
Soft goat hair brushes are the ones usually recommended for glazing ceramic pots because they hold a LOT of glaze. Holding a lot of glaze is important, especially if you want a smoother application with fewer brushstrokes. In addition ultra soft brushes are important for working with metal leaf, especially the real kind and they probably will do well with pigment powders (including powdered pastels) applied or blended dry. I haven't yet had a chance to try them with painted glazes but fewer brushstrokes may mean they'll work there too (although airbrush would be the very best). You may even want to use these brushes for powdered blush but if you do, use brushes you reserve only for cosmetic use. Flat chip brushes are usually easy to find locally in several sizes, even at hardware stores, at all different price points. Only 1 of them is included here. Even specialty art stores usually only carry 2-3 sizes of the mop style. This set has 8 of them. In addition, 2 smaller pointed brushes (the kind used for sumi-e) are included and they are usually only found in stores selling pro supplies. Potters use them for detail work. One of these has a pointy back, presumably for sgraffito (scratch) work. The wooden handles are shorter for better control and smoothly finished enough for these purposes. The ferrules (metal rings holding the brush hairs to the handle) are seamless and made of aluminum which means they are rust resistant. So I expect these brushes to perform for a reasonably long time if the user takes good care of them. Hopefully they will still be reasonably priced when you go to replace or add to your collection. Don't worry if you have a bit of shedding, especially at first. Hairs which make it into the glaze fire will burn out by themselves in the kiln. If you can't retrieve them immediately from a wet watercolor painting it's usually best to fish them out once it's dry. Not only do these appear to be good quality to perform a long time, this larger assortment will provide you with choices on the best brush to use for the pot you're glazing and the effect you want to achieve. Final note: This is another vote to have all instructions written in Chinese to be edited in the final version by a native English speaker. There are quite a few awkward terms used in the writing that comes with these brushes but the most embarrassing one of all is the second last word (which should be two words) in note #1 on BOTH sides of this information card. ... show more

  • Ok value, not great brushes
The quality of these brushes is pretty apparent when you open the box. The handles are rough and unfinished, ferrules on several are jiggly. The bristles are surprisingly quite soft to the touch and hold paint pretty well. However, some of them did lose a couple bristles in the painting. In general, not terrible, but not great. For the price these would be fine to give a variety of brushes to kids. ... show more

  • Good variety for the price, mostly OK quality
I like the variety in this set of goat hair brushes. It's a nice assortment of various shapes and sizes that are useful for many different brushstrokes, whether you're using them for painting or ceramic glazing. So far I am using them for ceramic glaze. Once you try goat hair brushes, you will appreciate how much glaze they pick up and hold, versus synthetic brushes. Especially if you're using thinner medium, such as watercolor or glaze — you'll find they will help you with smoother, longer strokes without needing to reload your brush as often. This is very helpful when you want even application and fewer starts & stops in your brushwork. Do presoak them and allow them dry before you use them for the first time with glazes. The handles are on the cheap side, so you will see staining on the wood, and I anticipate the ferrules may not hold up that well especially as bristles begin to drop. Two of the brushes had slightly loose ferrules right out of the package, but I have given them a careful and gentle crimp with a pliers that helped secure them. ... show more

  • I love the assortment of brushes in this set
I do a lot of ceramic painting and porcelain painting. These brushes are perfect for picking up my loose watercolor type and globes and under glazes. They hold their shape beautifully especially the detail brushes. The ends contain little loops so you can hang them although I do not do that. They lose very little of their bristles, cleaning them is easy, they have a lot of softness to them even after repeated use, and that it they are a great price for as many brushes as you get. Minimal shedding we're talking about maybe one or two hairs. ... show more

  • Functional for non-important projects
This set of mop and other brushes works for general / non-serious painting needs (small artifacts, craft projects, backgrounds, washes, etc.) as some of the brushes arrive with their bristles frayed and slightly out of shape (due to being just thrown into a small tight space), and some of the bristles also falling off easily. Also, best used for acrylics or oil paints rather than watercolor as these won’t hold a shape when wet. Ideally 3-3.5 stars ... show more

  • This is a nice collection of the various brushed needed for acrylic painting.
The set comes with varying size brushes - both width and length. There is also a manual to describe the best way to prepare them for first usage, cleaning, and storing. Once dry they store nicely in the original box they come in, or as I have done, they fit into a plastic sectioned box I have for storing brushes. I love the variety of sizes. ... show more

  • Mediocre
I just started pottery and was looking for some good brushes. These brushes are ok. They don't always put the glaze on accurately but the bristles are soft. The handles are not the best quality and are a little rough and unfinished.

  • A Bit Mixed
The bristles on these brushes are super soft, really nice quality goat hair, and since they are mops it is fine that they are not pointy or super even since these are for moving around a lot of water and more freeform and fluid motion. There are some problems though. The wood handles are very rough, the smaller of the mops is outright splintery and none of them are fun to handle. Think painting with a popsicle stick. The ferrule is very loose on the handle, it is clamped tight on the bristles, but it just wobbles terribly. These could be really nice mops if the brush part was just a little less cheap. ... show more
