  • This worked for me
My 2016 F-150 Platinum Pickup Truck started to exhibit some issues with the Sync 3 navigation system. It worked pretty good for the first couple of years. I bought this brand new vehicle from a leftover inventory in 2017, and was very pleased with the electronics, but after a Sync software update in early 2020, it started to display an error message “navigation fault”. Once that error comes up, you are essentially unable to use the navigation system at all. So I called Ford and took the vehicle in to 3 different dealers, only for them to tell me that something that was out of warranty had malfunctioned and I needed to be ready to pay a significant amount of money for a new controller or sync computer. Just the original part is about $2K or there about, plus technical instal which added about $750. It’s frustrating to have to spend so much money to fix something that should be of high quality. I think they called it an APIM controller. I did some research, found some very interesting feedback from many similar cases across the country. Well, it ends up that Ford is fully aware of the issue, and has a good number of customers like me, convinced that their Sync 3 system wasn’t ready for prime time back in 2016. Looks like the newer vehicles don’t have the hardware issue, but this is pretty upsetting that Ford would take a shortsighted position like this. They should stand behind their products, specially in a vehicle with all the bells and whistles. Saw some YouTube videos of people working around Ford’s Sync issues in 2016 models, by simply swapping the factory installed USB dual port hub in the main dashboard compartment, with a newer version that allows Apple CarPlay to work. At first, I struggled to understand what was needed to allow Apple CarPlay, but the videos really made a difference and I decided to give this a try. Don’t think too much about what and why, just do some research on YouTube and you will be able to see how simple this truly is. As others have stated, the USB hub does not look original, does not seem to be a genuine Ford part, but it works. That’s my case too, it worked. Now I have access to navigation through Apple CarPlay, which is very good and somewhat satisfying to have a reasonable workaround. Sure, there may be a time sooner than later, when I will have no choice but to get a new APIM, but for now, I’m delighted to have found this much more affordable solution. When doing your USB hub swap, keep in mind that the 2 connectors are just a tad tricky to unplug from the factory installed USB hub. I recommend you find YouTube videos that show how to disconnect those 2 plugs. Not difficult, just a bit tricky. They require finesse, so take your time and don’t use force. Hope this helps you, specially if you have a Ford 2016 model and want to enable Apple CarPlay to work. I think the reason Apple CarPlay does not work on factory installed 2016 USB ports running Sync 3 is because the factory installed USB port is 2.0 hardware, and the iPhone CarPlay requires USB port 3.0 hardware. That’s my theory, not sure if that’s the reason. I just know that swapping my factory installed USB port with the one I got from Amazon worked for me, just as for many other users that have shared this tip online. To all of those generous contributors, THANK YOU!!! It was easy to do, no special tools per se required. Just a small flat screwdriver tip to carefully lift the original part from the console, which I wrapped in painters tape before using to prevent the screwdriver tip from scratching the finish. It worked very well. Thank you, Ricardo ... show more

  • YAY....Apple Car Play!!!!
Worked perfect in my 2016 Escape Titanium. A few weeks ago I updated to the latest version of Sync, then I saw a post on Facebook about replacing the USB ports. I figured if it didn’t work, I could send the part back. It only took me about 10 minutes to pop out the old port & pop in the new one. I’m super happy to have Apple Car Play in my car, it was the only thing I was sad not getting when I recently bought the car. ... show more

  • 2016 Ford Edge Sport has CARPLAY
Just bought my used car (new to me) and was super bummed it didn't have CarPlay. Thank God for YouTube and others writing review on here. My husband was able to get the original one out with a lot of brute strength and using plastic tools purchased with this item. It wasn’t easy yall and he was scared he was going to crack something but it finally came out. He had to pry it out using a tool on each side to get it out. ... show more

  • Apple CarPlay worked
This module fit in my 2018 Ford Edge. Also, Apple CarPlay worked automatically. Very happy. The Ford Dealership had no idea how to fix the broken USB ports and sent me wrong part. Study all descriptions before buying. Lack of any details could mean a used or wrong part for your vehicle.

  • Worked as Expected
It was easy to install; just pull out the old one, move the cables over to the new one, and then just push the new one into place. Next time you start the truck, connect a usb cable to your phone and to the new usb outlet. You should then see car play start on the phone. Note: I only tested with Apple Car Play. ... show more
