  • Works Great On Large Door
Updated Review: It is now the end of July 2024. My Genie 6072 broke! This is disappointing. I didn't notice any "warning signs" prior to the failure. I used the remote to command the door open, it hesitated a bit, something inside popped, and that was the end of any movement one way or the other. I removed the two screws that allow access inside the power head. When I pulled the front panel off, a couple of large plastic chunks came out! This is a major piece of the internal drive shaft. After some further research on the Genie parts page, this part is not available as a repair part. That was interesting! Lucky for me, Genie has a 5 year warranty on parts! The "fix" apparently, is just to replace the entire powerhead. I contacted Genie Customer Support at their 800 number. It was about a two minute wait on the phone. When this nice lady came on the line, she got my info and told me they'd be sending out a new power head - free! All they asked for was the shipping fee ($18). She also sent an email so I could attach proof of purchase (my Amazon invoice worked for that) and a picture of the part. That's all there was to it! Frankly, pulling the old power head and installing a new one is going to be easier than trying to fit in a new part to the old power head anyway. As for the broken unit, she said, "Keep it. Use it for spare parts - whatever." So I'm sticking to my 5 star rating. Sure, it broke less than two years into use, but the warranty part is a whole free unit and the customer support was SO GOOD, I'm not going to complain! When the part arrives, I'll take an hour or so to swap them out and be back in business. It has been a terrific opener! I have several large overhead doors on one of my buildings. I wanted to automate at least one; got tired of giving all of them the old heave-ho to get them open. Not getting any younger! Anyway... I chose one of the 12H x 14W doors. The height and weight (280 lbs) pretty much ruled out any track and chain type drive. I reviewed a bunch of specs and decided the Genie should do the job. In short: it did! Installation was very straight forward and easy. The instructions provided are clear and well thought out. There's even a nice video that walks you thru it. This particular door needed some adjustment and the torsion springs had weakened. I decided to replace the springs (which I did myself and that went well - thanks, YouTube!) So after the clean, lube, springs, and adjustments, the door was easily liftable with one hand. BUT... I actually installed and tried the Genie before all the spring and door work. IT STILL LIFTED THE DOOR! Honestly, step 1 of the install is to make sure your door works smoothly FIRST. So needless to say, the Genie worked much smoother and quieter after all the door work. It's nice to have a 12ft door that will open all the way automatically. One caveat to my installation I'd like to point out: I own a scissor lift, so all the spring and opener work was much easier (and safer) than having to climb a ladder over and over across a 14ft wide door. I don't think I would have liked working that high on a ladder. I will say, though, if I had to install just the Genie on a tall ladder, it was easy enough that I could probably do it. The mounting is super simple; the unit slides onto the torsion bar and one lag screw secures it to the building frame. (Now running all that little beam break sensor wire over and down to each side would have been tedious on a ladder.) So overall, the Genie was easy to put in, seems plenty strong to do the job, and I may end up doing the other doors as well! Also, the wireless opener switch works great and the key fob opener works from like 50+ yards away. I can open this door from across the road at my other building! Cool! Too bad I don't have wi-fi at that building. It would be nice to be able to use that feature from my phone. ... show more

  • Great opener except for if you want to open it manually.
Installation isn't supper easy but it went well with the instructions. Took a few hours, but that included cleaning out the front corners of the garage and removing the old opener. It's quiet and works well. I'm am disappointed in the manual release not having a detent/lock in position feature. You have to hold down on the release rope while trying to lift the door. That sucks. I think it should lock in the manual and the opener position. That's my only complaint. Everything else was great! ... show more

  • Works well, quiet, good for DIYers
I have been using Lift Master door openers for decades, but wall-mounted options are limited. After much research, I selected this Genie model over the others simply because of the design on the cable tensioner and because it does NOT have internet connectivity. The cable tensioner on the other openers seemed like a part that was designed to fail, so I am glad that Genie was able to design a better solution for this. Installation was pretty straight-forward for a DIYer, but does take a long time, so be prepared to spend 4-5 hours on this project. After the install, everything worked as expected. The bluetooth-only light is convenient, although it would be nice if the color temperature was adjustable. I also read that you can add on additional lights, but they don't seem to be widely available and are very expensive. I like the simple wall mount control (also bluetooth, but can be wired), but it is difficult to find in a dark garage because the marking light is not constantly on, so you have to wait for it to blink to find the button. My last nit-pick is that they only supplied one remote. Two remotes would have been better. This garage door opener is really, really quiet. The door itself makes more noise moving that the motor does! It is easy to program. The solenoid door lock is cool. It frees up a lot of ceiling space. Overall, I am really happy with this purchase and would recommend it. ... show more

  • 12' x 12' commercial door. Very nice, but not perfect (one failure in 45 days).
This was installed on a 12’ x 12’ fiberglass commercial door, that has been neglected for decades. Update: I have had one failure (failure to lower) in 45 days of daily use. Raised, brought car out, then just randomly would not lower. Had to unplug and plug back in the unit for it to work, then it did fine. Original review is below: PROS: The opener itself was installed in ten minutes. It took way longer to wire the safety beams than to mount the opener on the torsion shaft. The coupler that connects the opener to the torsion bar is clever and simple. Programming the UP and DOWN limits (and other settings) is straightforward. The wireless wall button and LED light are pretty nice. It’s ridiculously quiet. No one will be able to make the door itself quieter than the opener. It makes the rattling of your standard door sound like a freight train in comparison. CONS: It has randomly lost the UP and DOWN limits, requiring climbing the ladder again and resetting them. I’m not sure if it’s from me fiddling around, losing power, etc, but that’s annoying. Instead of using physical limit switches, I’m guessing the circuity counts rotations of the shaft. If it loses that count, it defaults to requiring a reset. The emergency cord release is very stiff and requires significant screwing around to disengage. While the wall button is nice, the button that goes in your car is junk (you can’t tell if you’ve pressed the button successfully or not). I am actually using the wall button in my car (it has a nice, tactile click) with another wall button on the way for, you know, the wall. The opener is slow, as everyone else has discussed. Ultimately, if you time opening the door well enough before you get in your car (or as you’re pulling back in), it’s not a big deal, but you can definitely get in your car, start it and be ready to pull out before the door is all the way up. The VAC to VDC transformer in the unit gets HOT. These openers are in hot garages, up on a hot ceiling, so I imagine they’re designed to withstand the heat, but still. The body of the opener gets nearly too hot to touch. I’d hate to feel the temp on the transformer itself. As others have said, the transformer buzzes. I can hear it up on a 12’ ceiling, while standing on the ground. It’s faint, but it’s there. And unnecessary. ... show more

  • Best Garage Door Opener I Ever Owned.
I was very worried about installing myself, but no problem. The average handyman with tools can install this. One suggestion is just do it on an off day and take your time, do not rush. Works great and is super quiet. Love it !!!!!!!!!!

  • Poorly designed/engineered. Difficult installation, terrible instructions. Overall, VERY UNHAPPY
2026 UPDATE Less than 4 years of use and the opener slammed shut randomly and stopped working. Called product support and they had me open the case, to which I found a PLASTIC drive gear split completely in half and broken. Now they want me to pay for shipping for a replacement unit. Stay the heck away - Genie is junk. My previous opener lasted 30 years and this didn’t make it 4 years of occasional use. *UPDATE* Not even six-months in and the opener jammed halfway open. This was a result of a 'spring tensioner' failure, which I predicted would happen in my original review below. The junk tensioner jammed in the track, pinching in-between two pieces where the track bolts together. The only way to un-bind the jam was to physically cut the spring tensioner. Luckily, the door is back to being operational - it seems as if this junky part is unnecessary, so if I had to do this over again, I wouldn't have even gone through the hassle of mounting and installing them. Just another testament as to how pitiful this kit is - couldn't even last for six months without having a major issue. *ORIGINAL REVIEW* Purchased to upgrade from an old chain-drive garage door opener. While I was really looking forward to a side/torsion mount unit to remove the head-knocker setup from my ceiling, I must say, after going through the pain of installing this system, I would not purchase another Genie system. In this situation, the CONS heavily outweigh the PROS: CONS: 1) Instructions are garbage. Huge fold-out pamphlet instructions that are cluttered with gibberish writing. For being made in USA, they must have outsourced their instruction writing to China. 2) The system only comes with ONE vehicle remote. Paid over $400 and had to spend another $100 to get four more remotes since Genie uses their own proprietary code that does not work with the remotes that pair with almost every garage door opener (Craftsman, Chaimberlan, Liftmaster, etc.) 3) The 'spring tensioners' that you have to drill and bolt to the bottom corners of the garage door are complete garbage. They're made of very flimsy metal that will bend and hang up in the track at the first opportunity. They included plastic 'spacers' to prevent this, but they are made from recycled McDonald's cups, so they're best suited in the trash can right out of the box. Also, the spring tensioner clip is nothing more than a plastic wire retainer. I don't see it lasting long as it runs up and down steel cable with every open/close cycle. I'm sure they'll break in the future and I'll have to go through the pain of replacing them. 4) The metal shaft inlet is crap. Cheap, chinesium that bends with the slightest torque on the coupler bolts. I put the coupler on and tightened one full turn based on the instructions, but this bent the shaft so it wouldn't slide completely over the torsion axle on my garage door. Ended up having to mount the opener on the opposite side so I could use the opposite input shaft on the opener that hadn't been bent. Instructions should state to wait to torque the bolts on the motor site until the motor is on the torsion shaft, or better yet, just use decent metal for the product. I'm sure getting this off of the shaft when it inevitably breaks will be a BEAR - the crap metal is undoubtedly mashed in the coupler now. 5) The blocked doorway 'Safety Beam' system is crap. The sensors are HUGE - twice the size of most other systems. They do not simply clip to the track like most other systems either - they have to be mounted to the floor or wall. To top it off, they're made of cheap plastic and since they stick out like a sore thumb, I'm sure they will get kicked and break. 6) The 'bluetooth light' is also junkola. It hardly provides any light whatsoever. I have a two-car garage and the light barely emits a glow. It's probably good enough to see to get out of your car, but if you need more than that, you'll be fumbling for the light switch in your garage. Also, the mounting holes are ignorant - they should have provided a two-piece mounting bracket, but instead have slot mount holes which makes it a PIA to mount on a ceiling. Light cord is only 6', so you better have an outlet nearby. Luckily I had one close enough from my old ceiling mounted opener. 7) Did I mention it only came with ONE remote and I had to spend another $100 to get more???? UGH -what a rip! PROS: 1) It's definitely a compact unit, brownie points for that. It doesn't take up much space although I'm not completely confident in it being 'secure' with the flimsy L-bracket that it included. 2) It's very quiet - WAY quieter than any ceiling-drive unit I've seen. Conclusion: Overall, I really am not happy with this. Too many issues installing and fumbling with a kit that seems as if it was engineered by a 5 year old. I'm very mechanically savvy and typically have no issues doing work like this. Install ended up taking me nearly 5 hours by myself, as I had to spend well over an hour interpreting the instructions and two hours dealing with the junk tension springs and chinesium metal input shaft. Had I known this was what I was in for, I definitely would have opted for a different brand. I should have stuck with Lift Master - my last unit lasted over 20 years! Very disappointed in this product. For being made in USA, I expect much more. On top of that, I spent over $400 on the system and it by no means reflects any type of quality for that price. Do yourself a favor and buy another brand - Genie has some serious work to do to make this unit even remotely impressive. ... show more

  • Quality for a great price!
Best thing I ever did was get away from the overhead units. Quiet, steady and take up so much less room. Install is super easy and the instructions are great. I originally bought one so I could get more ceiling Height over my bay that has the lift and I liked it so well that I bought 3 more. 1 for the garage a 2 for the house. Had a problem with programming the last one so called customer service. They walked me through some trouble shooting over the phone then sent me a new main board that same day. • Powerful, easy to install and takes up very little space.
Love this garage door opener. I decided to go with Genie because I trusted the brand. I was not disappointed. The door it's on is 12 x 12, insulated panels. Big door but this opener handles it with ease. Also need to do a shout-out to their Customer Service folks. We installed the door and couldn't get it to connect with the remote. Called CS and they walked me through the highest probability issues. Fixed it on the first try. It comes with only one remote, which I didn't like too much but I'll be OK with that, I guess. ... show more
