  • A good starting place for a beginner
This is a thoughtfully assembled beginner’s set, and I’m pleasantly surprised by its quality at this price point. It comes in a compact zippered nylon case and includes four carving knives (whittling, detail, hook, and geometric), six chisels, cut-resistant gloves, a leather strop with polishing compound, a block of wood to start with, and some sandpaper. Each tool has a protective cover, and the handles are nicely finished. While the edges are reasonably sharp, I’d recommend refining them further before use. Purpose & Future Plans Although I haven’t had the chance to use the tools yet, I ordered this kit with a very specific project in mind. I collect Victorian Adirondack frames—often beautifully carved with leaves or vines—and a few of mine are missing original elements. I thought this set might let me try my hand at recreating those lost pieces. I grew up watching my Granny whittle toy tops and repair chair rungs with a pocketknife and a pine branch, so maybe I inherited a little of her spirit. This kit might be just the spark I need to give it a try. I've not yet tested these, but I will update the review after I've had a chance to try them out. So far, these look like an excellent place to begin. ... show more

  • Great beginner set
I am a total beginner at Wood Carving and I didn't want to spend a fortune on my first purchase. I saw this set and it contained everything I needed to get started. While I need a lot more practice carving, these tools work great for someone just starting out.

Great set for the money! Much better than the knives I got in a kit. Very sharp and easy to use. Love the storage of the envelope it comes with.

  • Great value! Need better gloves (or modify the included ones)
What you get in this kit for the price is simply amazing. The knife-like blades come well honed and ready to be stropped. Some of the chisel-like blades need a bit more work before use, I had to take mine to 400 and 1000 grit stones prior to stropping. The inclusion of slice resistant gloves is appreciated, but they are small (about "medium" sized) and have no grip. They're very slippery and IMO dangerous to use as it's very hard to hold the block of wood and tool steady (minus one star). I used bandage wrap to improve the grip but they are still on the small side for my hands, but they'd be useable if I had nothing else (once wrapped). Please do wear slice protection gloves - whittling blades are sharper than sharp - they're sharper than a fresh utility knife blade! I love that they included a 1x1x4 piece of basswood to get you started - so you can get a feel for how wood "should" carve before you start picking up random bits of sticks ;) Tip: blades aren't sharp until you can lightly place them perpendicular (straight up) on a fingernail and feel them bite in and not move when attempting to gently slide them in the scraping (not slicing) direction. ... show more

  • Recommended with reservation - for learning on softwoods
This is a very inexpensive set of Carving Tools at $2-$3 per tool. IMO, it has one very specific use purpose that warrants it's purchase: That is for light use, whittling, or introductory carving on softwoods/basswood for a Scout or other youngster. In this case, the Gegarrd kit can be OK for learning technique or occasional projects, especially if you have taught the Scout/youngster to hone or sharpen them frequently and maybe even reshape bevels. But if your youngster plans on doing detailed relief carving, hardwood carving, or frequent use, they may quickly run into issues with edge retention and control—where premium tools really show their value. Essentially, you face the same issues as H----r F-----t vs. say 3 Ch----s chisels. This set is $16. A likely higher HRC set - such as BeaverCr--t, can be 10x that. Particularly in a learning situation, nothing can be more frustrating and discouraging than using 'poor', particularly dull, edge tools. And dangerous, because of the high force needed to cut. (Slip) Neither the alloy or HRC is specified. Bad news. The listing mentions 'Chromium Vanadium' apparently for the 4 walnut carving tools. Most likely (and hopefully) Chinese 50CRV4 - a reasonable tool steel (not stainless - will rust) likely 54-55 HRC. Tolerable. However, the 6 chisels are mentioned as just 'carbon steel' ' no mention of Cr or V. Not great. If I were to give this as a gift, I would include more basswood blanks, plus one better tool, perhaps a BeaverCr--t Wood Chip Carving Knife C8 1.5" Sloyd Whittling Knife for Detail (Amazon) - about $14 - and explain why. I was thinking of a 4-star rating because of the likely sharpness issues. Yet the kit contains so much value and is so complete, polishing paste and all, and the walnut handles so well finished, it has to be 5 stars. 5 stars - functional, but for learning, on softwoods only. Manufacturer/supplier: Increase sales by specifying what alloy is used for the tools, and the chisels. And the HRC for each. Recommended with reservation - for learning on softwoods Tip: You can assess sharpness using the 'severed horizontal thread' technique. Nail 2 finish nails 1-2cm apart in a small wood block. Tie a sewing thread in moderate tension between them. Tare the assy on a gram kitchen scale. Vertically hold the blade in contact with the string. Slowly force down the knife. No sawing! Note the force when just severed. Excellent - under 30g. Ok - under 60g. Dull - 90g or more (time to hone/strop). If you really want to give your youngster the best start, strop/hone each to 60g or better before gifting. You still face the low HRC fast-dulling problem, but at least he/she starts sharp. Test: The sever force obviously depends on the thread used. Its the ratios/% difference thats important. Thats why a sharp reference is really necessary. The polyester string I used was recommended for PU polyester umbrella fabric. The B-----craft was 115g. OOB.The Gegarrd was 450g OOB. This is certainly enough to show that there is a difference. I was also able to get a rough approximation of HRC using my Grizzly T10277 Hardness Tester Files. The HRC 55 definitely bites considerably on the Gegarrd Detail spine edge. The HRC is less than 55. It does not bite on the B-----craft detail spine. It skates. The HRC is greater than 55. The HRC 60 file bites slightly. Guessing HRC is around 57 -58 These are as expected. ... show more
