  • Why did I wait so many years to buy these.
These hoes pinch off pliers are so handy to have around, I don’t know why I ever messed with trying to use bolts and rubber plugs in hoses. These pliers do a great job on rubber fuel lines, small vacuum lines, heater hoses and pretty much anything else. They do not do damage to the hose yet they crimp tightly and do not allow leaks. The only complaint I have about them is they are heavy, that can sometimes be a problem with smaller hoses. ... show more

  • Well made heavy duty pliers
The Gearwrench products are very well made and reasonably priced, I am not a full time technician but do enjoy repairing my vehicles to save money. Also a firm believer in having the right tools for a particular job. Looked at a few brands and was unimpressed with the overall build quality, could get a set of plastic pliers for half the cost of one of the gearwrench pliers but after looking at how cheaply made and light weight the plastic pliers are I decided the gearwrench brand was my choice. I couldn’t be happier with the performance of these pliers worked perfectly on my upper and lower radiator hose. ... show more

  • Clamps nicely, not bad for the price
This first came in a decent package that didn't require a chainsaw and some razor blades to open, which is always a plus in my book. The handles have a decent textured rubber grip to them that feels nice in the hand. They can be used with hoses up to an inch, which is more than i'll ever need. Pros: Textured rubber grip is easy on the hands once you really start to grip down Nice beefy spring that helps reset the pliers once released Ends pivot slightly to help get a good fit Rounded clamping end so hoses don't get damaged Easy to release Cons: Everything is riveted, so hopefully doesn't get super loose over time Pawl teeth could be better. Doesn't give a reassuring feeling that it is clamped all the way. You really gotta squeeze hard to ensure no leaks on bigger hoses Overall, It does a decent job at pinching off hoses. For the larger ones, you really need to crank down on them, and even then they may not hold well once you release. This is due to the spacing of the teeth on the locking mechanism. If you need that non moving grip, look at some vise grips. ... show more

  • Nice -- worked with snowblower repair
I had never used anything like this before. My 1 year old snowblower was not starting and a video online pointed me to the solution on cleaning the carburetor. I found these on Amazon and it helped me with my repair. 30 minutes later, I was up and running. Hopefully I won't need to use these often, but glad I got them. Very good quality and easy to use. ... show more

  • Good tool.
I ordered the gear wrench 145 and the Cal Van 16000. Both are very similar, but have some differences. The Gear Wrench right away looks like a more expensive too. Not better, just more expensive. It has rubber on the handle, is all black, etc. The gear wrench also self opens, the Cal Van doesn't. You have to manually open it. Advantage gear wrench. The gear wrench makes more noise. The parts on the end - the clamps, are on looser. The Cal Van hardly rattles and seems to have slightly tougher tolerances. Advantage Cal Van. The gear wrench opens slightly wider. Very slight. I'll call it a draw because it's not significant enough to give it a greater capacity. At a certain point with both of these wrenches you need to step up to a larger wrench for larger hoses. Finally the gear wrench is made in Taiwan. The Cal Van is assembled in the USA with global parts. Now for me that's advantage Cal Van. Between the two it really comes down to self opening vs assembled in the USA. The self opening might wear out or break at some point I don't know. Both appear to be well made and should last a long time - I am hoping. You can't go wrong with either tool I don't think. The gear wrench does advertise a lifetime warranty, but with all warranties ask yourself are you really going to take the time to get another? Did you save the receipt? Etc. most of us will just buy another wrench. With that said after using them both neither stopped the flow 100% out a 5/8" hose. I ended up using a plug. ... show more

  • Nice Hose Clamp Pliers
Got these when I work on radiators and other hoses in our vehicles. I had some other clamps from the local hazard fraught, but honestly they were pretty cheap and difficult to use (they required you to turn a small knob dozens of times to clamp onto a hose). This is much easier - squeeze the pliers on the hose, and it locks into place. Takes 2 seconds to setup. To release, there's a lever to disengage the teeth and you are ready to clamp again. Build quality is decent, and since it's not something I use daily, I'm sure it'll last a long time. ... show more

  • They don’t stay locked very well
When you want to pinch off a hose they don’t lock at a tight point. They release to the next tightest lock point and then the hose just continues to drip. I also found that the lever is quite easy to release if touched, even lightly, when working near the tool. I did find a solution by using a wire tie to hold it in place. But I really shouldn’t have to. ... show more
