  • Sometimes, you'll get the same quality with a different label, for less
I'll start with Danaher. Now, Danaher makes Matco Tools, Armstrong, Silver Eagle, Kobalt, Craftsman, NAPA, Allen, Gear Wrench, and K-D Tools. I’m actually not sure if they are called Danaher anymore, they may be called Apex Group, or split in two forming Danaher and Apex but regardless, they’re all under the same umbrella, which is why you’ll find many similarities between these products if you look closely. Now before we get crazy and say that Kobalt is just as good as Armstrong, we must understand this does not mean they’re all of the exact same quality, or even made in the same place. Some of Matco and Armstrong tools are finer than craftsman or kobalt, by a considerable amount. Just know the battle between Kobalt, craftsman and gearwrench, Sometimes, can be a bit silly. But sometimes..... its not. So let’s break it down like this, Danaher owns the following: Matco Tools = very high end Armstrong = industrial high end Silver eagle = industrial Kobalt/Craftsman/Napa/Allen/Gearwrench/K-D = home, hobby, otherwise light use. Starting with silver eagle, you’ll begin to find more Taiwan/China made products, though they are still tough and respectable as far as usable tools go. Sometimes, you’ll find name brands at the bottom of this list can float into the industrial side of the world in quality, I see this often with Napa. Quality and features in the bottom list seems to always be floating around, keeping the market busy and tool sales up from people who don’t use or need tools every day with an attempt to spark interest. And on occasion, some of the great quality at the top of the list will trickle down to some of the lower end brands because of some bulk materials or other various reasons. So let me get to the actual product being review here. First off the ratchets in this kit. They’ve put out a pretty decent tool at a fair price here. The internals of these ratchets you’ll find to be quite similar to the craftsman low profile ratchet #44995, which is a fantastic ratchet by the way. This gearwrench brand simply has 84 teeth instead of the 60 the craftsman had. The gearwrench is also not a quick release design which makes this ratchet stronger than the #44995. And I feel they have not overdone the tooth count either. I’ve pulled a great deal of torque on this ratchet with confidence and the clicking sounds very positive. These ratchets are far superior to the run of the mill craftsman. If you ask me, I’d say these gearwrench 84 tooth ratchets are a hybrid of the craftsman low-profile and the craftsman premium 84 tooth ratchet. Both great tools. The thumb ratchet in this kit has the exact same head with a shorter handle. The sockets are great, STAMPED with sizes on two sides of each socket which is great for finding the one you need, and wont wear off like this "laser etched" crap. The fit and finish of these are pretty good too. Just this morning I abused the 1/2” deep socket with a breaker bar + 3ft cheater with no issues, which is what sparked me to write the review. But, like any brand, including the high end, they will break if you push them hard enough, I have yet to see adamantium sockets on the market. You’ll find the Napa labeled sockets to be very similar to gearwrenches. Give this kit a go. These tools should last a long time. ... show more

  • Great tool set
I was looking for a set of 6-point sockets to finish out my tool collection, and after comparing prices of other "just" socket sets (ratchets and extensions not included), I actually found that this GearWrench set offered a better collection of sockets at a better price, and the ratchets and extensions were icing on the cake. These sockets are well made and I've already used them several times and they are holding up well. The sockets are stamped (not etched) with large numbers indicating their sizes so they are easy to read. The ratchet is comfortable in your hand and has the low-profile head (without the socket release button) which I am a big fan of because it lets you get into tighter spaces. Some people like the socket release button, so I guess this is just a matter of what your personal preference is. The ratchet operates very smoothly and has (I think) 60 teeth, so it doesn't take a long sweep of the handle to get your bolt/nut turning. They come in a nice case if you want to carry them around, but the case doesn't have handle--not an issue for me since I put them all in my toolbox and threw the case away. Additionally, I also purchased the 1/2" 6-point GearWrench set as well, and pretty much everything I've said about the 3/8" set applies to the 1/2" set as well. Both are very good sets. I'm not a professional mechanic, just a guy that enjoys having nice tools and turning wrenches on the weekends, so I look for well-made tools at reasonable prices. I do have a few (very few) ratchets/wrenches from some of the big name "tool truck" companies and they are very nice, but I can't justify filling my toolbox with those expensive--often overly-priced--tools. I won't buy the cheapest tools (even if I know I may only use it once), but I also won't buy the most expensive just because of the name stamped on the tool. I'm not using these tools daily as a mechanic/technician would, and my livelihood doesn't depend on my tools. I'm very happy with this purchase, and am certain that some day I'll be passing these very same tools down to my grandson (or granddaughter!). ... show more

  • Many features make these sockets superior!
--RANT ON-- First off, one of the best features of these GearWrench sockets is the fact that they are well marked by "STAMPING". Many other brands of sockets have now gone to a "laser etched" method of marking, which is far inferior. This etching is hard to read, and easily wears off. Soon you have a tool that you can't tell what size or brand it is. Guess what happens if you try to get warranty on it? "Sorry Sir. That tool can't be identified as OUR brand." --RANT OFF-- A very complete set of high quality metric and standard sockets that doesn't skip any sizes. Not mentioned in the description is that the sockets use a "flank drive" profile to minimize fastener head rounding. Another not adequately described feature is the deep sockets. Most deep sockets have the fastener drive opening machined all the way to the bottom of the socket. This can make it difficult to start a bolt, or start threading a nut on, as the fastener slides deep inside the socket. These gearwrench deep sockets have the fastener drive profile machined only as deep as the fastener nut or head, so you can apply a little pressure to the fastener as you begin to thread it. The ratchets are quality, and comfortable to use. A fairly fine 60 tooth count gear mechanism operates smoothly and allows for repositioning every 6 degrees in tight locations. Only two areas to nit-pick, as far as I'm concerned: 1. Although the case is well constructed with quality hinges and latches that will last a long time, it does not have a handle. 2. The ratchets do not have a quick release button. A feature that I miss. ... show more

  • These are nice!
I was looking to start a new collection for my son and myself and I wanted to include a socket set that I'd be proud to send him down the road with one day. This is that set. They're well made, the pieces have exceptional finish and work great. This set has all the pieces we'll probably ever need in the future. The ratchets are smooth as butter and work great. The only thing I would have changed as the engineering staff would have been to add a detent feature to allow the use of a button to release the sockets. You pretty much have to push on and pull off. Not a big deal, but my not much more expensive 1/2 inch set uses that system and I prefer it. ... show more

  • Much better than expected.
The set is really not bad. Great for home gamers and even professionals if you don't want to run down in debt with snap on. The ratchet has the same handle feel as snap on and just as smooth. Click of the ratchet is louder but you won't hear it over music anyways. The narling on the metric sockets and extensions is great. So far quality is better than expected. Sockets are made with the focus on the sides not corner gig like most brands. On deep wells the nut or bolt will catch and not go all the way down. Which is nice if you use tools every day. Chrome job is better than most with slight imperfections that go unnoticed unless put under close examination. The only problem I see is the 7/8 standard socket isn't stamped. Not a big deal since everything has a place in my toolbox. The case however is complete trash. I suggest take the lid off and lay it in the drawer of a toolbox. Not ideal for a travel situation as you'd spend more time sorting the sockets back out to find the one you need. Other than that I would recommend this set. ... show more

  • Very Nice Tools Set - Several Suggestions for Improvement
As with most of the reviewers, I found these tools to be of good quality and a very good value for the amount paid. The set is complete and covers most of the sizes needed for everything but specialized jobs. As other reviewers have noted, they are clearly and well marked. Which is very nice. Mechanically, these tools feel very nice in your hand. The actions to install and remove sockets is crisp and the retaining ball bearing does its job well to secure the socket when it use, and is not difficult to disengage when you are ready to change sockets. Some, who have experience with lower cost tools, know how a wrench feels when the socket or extension connection to the ratchet is loose or sloppy. These are not like that and feel good in your hands. This is not only an issue with feel. If the connections are sloppy it is often difficult to guide the socket onto the bolt it is intended to be used on, especially if an extension is being used. Most people read reviews looking for a clue as to problems they might find. There are several minor points I will make in this regard: The ratchet switch on both of the included ratchets has a movement which feels too loose and of relatively low precision. Only time will tell if there will be problems with this component. It seems to function perfectly, and I like the throw of the ratchet mechanism. I am willing to accept this in view of the other positive features of the tools, and their overall good quality. But, this component could use attention to improve the quality feel. The other point I would make is with regard to presentation of the product. When I first opened the plastic case, and first laid eyes on the tools, they appeared used. I expected to find a tray of shiny new sockets and components. But, these had a used appearance with finger prints and smudges covering them. The box was brand new and heat shrink wrapped. So, I can only assume they came packaged this way from the factory. The question, I suppose should be, "Who cares?" in this regard. But, seeing this definitely starts you off on the wrong foot. To the manufacturer, I would suggest cleaning the tools after production, a dishwasher would suffice, tongue in cheek, and simply having your packagers wear cotton gloves. To the buyer, I would suggest that if these are intended as a gift, I would open the box and wipe the tools off with a soft cloth before gift wrapping. The other point is that many of the sockets had fine surface scratches or abrasions on them right out of the box. This was not severe, and was only obvious in bright light. But, they are clearly visible and do distract from the appearance of new and quality. I would hypothesize this was as a result of contact with other similar sockets between manufacturing and packaging, as in moving down a conveyor, dumped unprotected into a hopper, etc. I would suggest that the manufacturer take steps to better protect the product between production and packaging. The above several points are not functional issues. But, I do think they strike at presentation, and are worthy of mention. It will be interesting to see if other reviewers have a similar experience in this regard. Overall, these are very nice tools. I would recommend them. You would have to spend considerably more to get significant improvement in quality. ... show more

  • GearWrench is becoming one of my favorite brands..
I bought this set as a gift for a family member. After receiving it in record time (thank you Amazon Prime) I opened the box to ensure that everything was accounted for. Folks this is a very nice quality socket set. I recently purchased and reviewed a set from SK model #91848 and let me tell you that this is the quality I was hoping for but didn't get with that purchase. The chrome finish is fantastic with a very bright jewel like appearance just like the big name professional grade offerings. It's very complete with all the sockets you would expect from a 3/8 drive set without skipping sizes. The case is probably a little bit bigger than needed but its in no way excessively large and is of very nice solid quality. Both of the ratchets included are top notch with 84 teeth. Personally I think that the tooth count is ideal and the only negative for me is the lack of a socket quick release. Although not having one probably helps give these ratchets their low profile and as stated they are a gift. A decision I find myself rethinking every time I look at the set! In my opinion you would be hard pressed to find a set this nice for the money... ... show more
