Description

GEARWRENCH started in 1996 with the birth of the Original Ratcheting Wrench. Today the brand has continued to innovate products by adding productivity features to many product platforms. This GEARWRENCH 239-piece Mechanics Tool Set offers 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2-inch drive sizes. Featuring 45-Tooth full polish chrome quick-release ratchets and knurled extension bars for a much needed grip when working on the job. Full polish chrome makes clean-up easy. Sockets and wrenches feature off corner loading technology to reduce fastener rounding. All tools are stored in a 3-drawer storage box with independent sliding drawers. Side flaps are used to lock the drawers in place and has a steel hinged lid and durable handles.

I bought this as a second travel set for a 3k mile cross country drive and plan to keep it in the back of my car for any other long trips. I shopped around a bit and found this to be the most inclusive. I am quite happy with GearWrench's quality and price. I am no professional mechanic but probably closer to a 'advanced' at home mechanic.I am no Snap On fan boy nor do i go out of my way to go with all Made in USA tools (but given the choice ill pick made in USA). That's not to say i don't appreciate good quality tools. I have a mixture of Snap-On, old Craftsman, Blue Point and even some Harbor Freight stuff. I originally bought a Craftsman set but was a bit turned off by the odd arrangement of things included and returned it; also almost every set nowadays seems to cater more towards SAE sizes (only 6 or 12pt metric sizes (not both), some do not include deep metric sockets..etc) which i find puzzling as mostly everything now days is metric. As a german car guy, this is a bit of a turnoff also. I was also dissapointed to see even the hand tools from Craftsman now are made in China. Comparing the set to my 10+ year old Craftsman set, the quality is close, but not on par to the older USA made stuff. The design has changed just slightly on the wrenches, in my opinion poor quality forging and even the stamping on the tools wasn't as good..etc. Just minor details like this which i wasn't quite happy with. No sense in paying a slight premium anymore i think for Craftsman. The only draw for Craftsman anymore (atleast for me) is ease of warranty exchange if you have a Sears nearby. GearWrench has a good reputation and included a good range of metric sockets in both standard and deep length aswell as 6 and 12pt. I also was pleased to see a 19mm combo wrench included..this is nitpicking a bit but all Craftsman sets stopped at 18mm and skipped some sizes in the metric range. On any Euro car you will eventually need a 19mm and occasionally you do come across some oddball sizes that are skipped with other sets. The ratchets included are teardrop type and adequate; but if you do even just a little wrenching on a regular basis do yourself a favor and get a good 72t (or more) 1/4" and 3/8" ratchet.. this makes a huge difference and is something you use all the time. I was happy it has a wide range of 1/2" metric sockets which comes in handy for suspension work. FYI aswell, this set is made in Taiwan. Overall this is a good starter set if you are putting together a set of tools, i bought a set a lot like this from Sears which i still use today. Just times have changed a bit and i now think this is a much better deal. I do have some other GearWrench items that have seen plenty of abuse and held up well; so i cant comment on how the warranty exchanges work. But honestly in my years of wrenching i have only broken a non impact extension used with an impact gun and a ratchet being used as a breaker bar... so i got what was coming to me. ... show more

    • Comprehensive Socket and Wrench Set

I was torn between the 243 pc set and the 239 pc set, but ended up buying the 239 pc set. I love the wrench set, and the socket selection is extensive, and wide ranging. There are videos on youtube worth checking out for both sets to see the subtle differences between them, but the metric sockets went a little larger on this one which sealed the deal for me. I don't really have anything bad to say about the set. The ratchets are nothing special, but they work just fine. I kind of wish the 3/8" and 1/4" ratchets were stowed with their respective sockets, but they all live in the top, so you have to open both parts to use them. No big deal. As for the box, I think it's plenty sturdy. Others have said that the handle is weak, but lets be realistic. This thing is quite heavy, and it's a blow molded case, albeit a good quality one. Carry it from the sides and you won't have a problem. This probably isn't something you would want to carry very far anyway. If you need a comprehensive, and good quality socket set, you can't go wrong with any of these. ... show more

First of all, these are Gearwrench branded tools, not KD. According to the packaging, the Allen and combo wrenches are made in China while the sockets and ratchets are made in Taiwan. This is a great set of mid range tools that has crazy wide coverage in sizes, from a tiny 4mm all the way to a whopping 1 1/2 inches. Nice fit and finish with a good heft to individual tools. Easily readable sockets. Whole set is very complete-it doesn't skip sizes like most sets do (at least until you get over 1 inch in size, then it's 1/8" increments) The toolbox is more than adequate too- it's more of a stacking storage system than a tool box but the quality seems solid as well. I like how the drawers are designed to pull out and take to whatever you're working on. The only slight negative may be the ratchets are not the 84 tooth variety; they're only 45 tooth but honestly that seems perfectly adequate as well. Also of note is there aren't any wobble joints (universals) which are vital to any complete set. No biggie tho, a good set of 1/4" thru 1/2" wobbles only cost about 12 bucks. Bought these to replace a comprehensive set of early '90's craftsman tools that were lost in a fire and I'm pretty damn happy with this purchase, especially for around 200 bucks. Debated endlessly about the 243 piece for $360 or the 239 piece set for $279. Did more research and it's 2 different sets with different parts Not the same set with just 3 less esoteric prices. Went with 243 and I'm super happy. It advertises as the 84 tooth set but it's the 90 tooth ratchets. Don't care about that. It's well organized and I've used the set a dozen times since I got it, to great effect. Fixing a toilet, fixing the car 3 times, fixing the table legs in the kitchen. Super useful complete set WITH NO SKIPS!! ITS A WONDERFUL SET. Solved all my problems in this area. Should last for decades. Project farm from youtube got me here and I'm super happy with the recommendation. ... show more

Great tool set. I love that it comes with a fitted tool chest - a place for everything and everything in its place. Nicely thought out, makes it easy to find the tool you need quickly and easily. Can't speak to longevity, since I just got it, but the tools definitely feel like much better quality than the hodgepodge of el-cheapo ones I've been gathering here and there. Contains a wide variety of sizes, both SAE and metric for dealing with a variety of fastener types. It will definitely save me a lot of interrupting what I'm working on to run to the hardware store to grab a tool I don't have yet. So far, great value for money. The one and only thing I'd change about this set would be to add an extra drawer for tools that don't come with it, like, say, pliers, vise grips, torque wrench, etc. ... show more
