I recently had this gas-on-glass unit installed. I was hoping to avoid the difficulty of keeping a stainless unit clean, we have had gas-on-glass before, so we wanted to get it again. In the pictures, it looks great. We could not find it in any store, so we bought it sight unseen. It's a GE -- what could go wrong? Unfortunately, there are some problems that are not evident in the pictures. The knobs are light, cheap plastic and are not heavy and solid like I had hoped. There is one middle grate that is hefty and solid, but the two other side grates are thinner. It does look nice once you clean and windex it, but it is starting to develop spots that I cannot seem to get off (and it has only been a few weeks). This is even though I am diligent about cleaning it promptly. There is also a safety concern. When you turn the unit on, it clicks until it lights. Once it lights, you adjust the flame and are good to go. Well, one time I turned the knob to ignite, but apparently it did not ignite but the gas kept coming out. I could not see this because of the large pan that blocked my view of the flame. After a few seconds I noticed that it had not ignited and adjusted the knob to get it to light. The spark ignited the gas and flames shot out toward me. Had I not noticed the ignition failure quickly, I wonder if a bigger gas cloud would have ignited. I do not recall this ever happening with my prior gas cooktop. So I now have a cooktop that has plastic knobs that might someday injure someone because of the ignition mechanism.
