  • Good idea average execution
The good news is the dust collection system works better than not having one. I found the instructions lacking, the unit somewhat flimsy, and the bottom exhaust port not functioning according to my liking. I had to buy an adapter for the bottom port to attach my shop vac and actually had to jury-rig it so the material would not get sucked in by the vacuum. I also had to stabilize it in the back. It definitely works now but this company needs to take a hard look at both the instructions as well as the overall design. ... show more

  • Catches what was expected
I’m using this in an unusual way. It works great for my use. It’s a little bulky for my use but it’s not the fault of the product.

  • I made modifications but worth it!
Summed up: I’m not crazy about the overall mounting design and the light is so-so. But it does help enormously in capturing that dust that floats in the air after using my miter saw indoors. Dust collection is very important to me as I woodwork in my home and two in my household have sinus sensitivities. My miter saw, with its spray of dust, is the worst-offending tool. Meaning I have a tendency to use it outdoors on a stand, limiting my use due to weather, sound for neighbors, etc. I chose this Garvin miter saw hood to see if it would help, and in short: It does, quite a bit. But there were some shortcomings, too, which I believe I overcame with the modifications I made that work… for me and my situation. Because my saw will still be used outside frequently, I didn’t want to remove the mounts for the stand. And because the two locations where I may want to use the saw in the shop are both benches with dog holes, I modified the dust hood to mount with two dowels in the 1” dog holes. I don’t know if this would work with ¾” dog holes. I mounted the hood arms directly to a 1” oak dowel, via a ¼” lag bolt and two fender washers through the end (see photos 1 and 2). This means that I didn’t have to use the multi-jointed steel mounting bars that I found more awkward than flexible. I shot a video of myself setting it up and trimmed it to 23 seconds total time, but ultimately didn’t upload it here because I can’t help being clearly seen. Suffice it to say the hood sets up very quickly from the included bag by using the dowels (yes, they fit in the bag, too) as handles to just pop into the dog holes. The light rope wasn’t something that I found useful nor convenient (for MY uses) and therefore I removed it. I believe in good lighting in my work areas, and the rope light here wasn’t adding anything additional to my overhead LEDs. It might be helpful for some, but it’s not bright enough to make a substantial difference in any but the worst lighting conditions. The dust collection was anecdotally very good with the 4” port of the hood directly connected to a 1.5HP dust collector and the usual 1.5” port on my saw connected to a dust extractor as usual. I don’t think I would use it in an operating room, but the tent DID substantially reduce that light dust that you see flying in the air in front of a sharp light, which is the stuff you want to minimize. ... show more

  • Catches most of the Sawdust
I am mostly pleased with this Collection hood and find that the only issue I had with it was that the instructions that come with it are pretty much useless and hard to understand. Luckily, I was able to look at pictures from the listing to figure out how to install it. It comes in a zippered case of the same material as the hood. Once you open it, it pops open to it's size and it is quite large and I recommend installed the side brackets before trying to figure out where to put it. It comes with 4 metal brackets and all hardware needs to install it. The brackets are paired 2 together and you connect them with 2 of the supplies bolts and wingnuts. Make sure you have the bottom and top legs pointed in opposite directions. Once connected, you can then mount this to the table surface. I positioned them about 1/2 inch away from the back legs of my saw so that the top flat piece was just behind where the fence is on both sides of the saw. You can then attach the metal brackets that are on the hood to the top of both sides and use the included bolts and plastic turn knobs to secure. (I went ahead and put the bolt with the plastic knob on the top of both sides and then slid the metal pieces onto them and tightened the turn knobs to hold the collection hood in place. The back bottom of the hood is elasticized and I was able to tuck it under the back of the saw to catch as much sawdust as possible. There is an LED light strip strung across the top front of it, but in my shop, this light doesn't really provide that much extra light on top of what my shop already provides. The bottom back of the hood has a built in port that is the perfect size for a 4" collection hose. This was the perfect size for my dust collector, but if you are using a shop vac, you will likely need to get some type of reducer to make sure your hose fits to it. Without this hood installed, my Miter saw throws a ton of sawdust off the back of it even with a hose from my dust collector connected to it. What that means is that I have to then go through with a hose and clean up a ton of sawdust from not only the back of the machine but also the floor and anything behind my Miter Saw table. With this hood attached to the tabletop, The majority of the sawdust is caught inside the body of the hood and can be redirected toward the collection chute at the bottom. All in all, I do think this is a worthwhile purchase and will drastically reduce the amount of sawdust thrown from the back of your miter saw and help channel it better to a dust collector or shop vac hooked up to the bottom of it. While the price does seem a bit high (currently $139), I do think this is a worthwhile investment and is priced about $100 less than the Rousseau that it appears to be a duplicate of! ... show more

  • Will collect dust
I think it is important to get something like this with the right expectations about how much dust it will collect. There will always be dust that escapes. But it does catch a lot of the dust and certainly much more than hooking my vacuum up to the miter saw directly catches. I have the DeWalt DW715 compound miter saw. There is enough adjustability in the hood to get a good fit around the saw, allow full range of motion, and still catch dust. The whole unit is a bit heavy so it is difficult to tighten it down enough to keep it from moving but I got it there. The four inch hose connection does not fit my 4 to 2.5 inch hose adapter. I will need to get a rubber sleeve to connect them. The instructions were easy to follow and there were no extra or missing parts. Overall, it is a good product and does what I want it to, there are just some areas that make it not perfect right out of the box. ... show more
