  • Good value for detailed cutting
This miter box and saw set comes with three interchangeable blades. The cutting is intended to be done with a pulling motion, which is more precise and energy efficient than a pushing motion. The edge of the two-sided Ryoba blade with coarser teeth is for rip-cutting (with the grain), and the side with finer teeth is for cross-cutting (against the grain). A one-sided blade with coarse teeth seems to be for heavier wood cutting. The thinnest blade is the equivalent of a hack saw blade for cutting plastics and lightweight metals such as sheet metal. There is a hole in the handle and in each blade where these can be store on wall pegs. The extra touch plastic packaging can also be used to store these together inside a tool box. I prefer to keep the entire set in the original box inside a drawer of a large tool chest. This is a small plastic miter box designed for more detailed work, and does not have the capacity for boards such as a 2-by-4 and larger. All the blades work very well, and changing them out in the handle is easy accomplished with a hand grip tension screw. There is also a slot in the middle of the screw where you could use a large screwdriver for tensioning if so desired. The blades hold into the handle very tightly, so I recommend using cut resistant gloves when changing out the blades to avoid possible cuts. The blades are very sharp! Considering this set includes 3 different types of blades, I feel the price is very competitive with other sets I see in the marketplace where most of them have only one saw blade included. ... show more

  • Handy little miter box that just needs a few more accessories to make it great
This is a handy miter box/saw set. I just wish it came with a few additional items, which I'll explain shortly. PROS: 1) The handle of the saw is very comfortable to use, and the blades are easy to change. 2) Having four different blades gives me options for different materials. 3) The miter box is lightweight, but it does its job, and the angles on the cuts were accurate. 4) The blades cut reasonably well. It takes a good amount of work to cut through hardwood, but that's to be expected. CONS: 1) It doesn't come with any way to secure the material being cut. I could clamp the miter box and the wood (or whatever I'm cutting) with clamps if the wood is longer than the miter box, but I have another full-size miter box that came with holes for little cams that I can use to push the wood up against the side of the miter box. That makes it much easier to cut and ensures that the angle of the cuts is accurate. 2) It would be nice if there were plastic blade guards to go on the saw pieces to avoid accidentally cutting one's fingers while handling the blades. 3) To really make this awesome, it would come with a case to hold everything. 4) The slot for cutting at 45 degrees from vertical isn't very useful, as it's really hard to get the saw started into the wood at an angle. You'd pretty much have to make a scoring cut perpendicular to the wood and then use the angled slot to finish the cut. The slot is pretty wide, giving the saw a lot of room to move around, so it's going to be hard to get an accurate clean cut using that slot. 5) The relief slot under each of the cutting slots allow for some minor wood tear-out. For critical work, I'll place a sacrificial piece of wood under the piece I'm cutting in order to support the fibers and prevent tear-out on the bottom of the cut. Even with its shortcomings, this is going to be useful for cutting small pieces of wood. I think it's a decent value for the price, but I would have given it five stars if it had come with the accessories mentioned above. ... show more

  • The saws are good. The miter box not so much. Questionable value.
Information that would have been good to have before acquiring this is as follows: The miter box is 11-3/4” long. The channel for stock is 2-5/8” wide – the widest stock you can use. It is 1-5/8” deep, so you probably can’t use stock thicker than 1-1/2”. The hole in the middle is 5/8” (.625”). The thickness of the base is 17/32 (~.53”). The wood saw and metal saw are both .030” (~1/32”) thick. The thickness of the drywall saw isn’t important, but it is .047” (3/64”). On my first use of the miter box, I found that it rocked a little, because the circular and straight molded runners on the back were a little higher at the center. Running the base across sandpaper on a flat surface for half a dozen strokes flattened the bottom so it wouldn’t rock while trying to use the box. The hole in the center (5/8” D) is too small for standard bench dogs, which are 3/4". This would be a good application for a spring-loaded dog to hold the box from the bottom so it doesn’t slide while using it … if one could find a 5/8” dog. For stability of stock that extends beyond the box end, one needs to have a rest for the workpiece so it doesn’t rock off. The surface of the box is 17/32” from the bottom, so a piece of wood of that thickness, even one of 1/2” thickness, would serve to hold the wood steady. I have only used the Japanese-style saw, and only the fine toothed (cross-cut and hardwood) edge. It cuts well, but does not remove as much material, per stroke, as my Japanese saw, but is comparable to my miter saw. It is fairly rigid, and has a small saw set so it leaves a nice, narrow kerf. The slots on the box are just slightly larger so one shouldn’t end up with off-angle (44° or 46°) cuts when making a 45° cut. So you don’t make my mistake, don’t just watch your cut and the saw at the front slot, but also the back slot. On my first cut, I did not keep an eye on the back, and I let the saw drift just enough to the right to take some plastic off the edge of the slot. Because of that, I wonder just how long this will remain usable for me … if I widen the slots. Because the box is soft plastic, easily eroded by the saw, plus the flaws enumerated above, I find this set to be a bad value. ... show more
